Replacement: https://theoldreader.com/
My sympathies. I never used the firefox tool, but I understand the frustration with disappearing readers.
I recommend https://theoldreader.com/ as a replacement.

I still use it every day
I like an online reader because I use it from multiple computers with multiple operating systems, and I never have to worry about syncing what articles I've already seen and/or starred. My current favorite is Inoreader, but I've used The Old Reader and Feedly before, and they get the job done as well.
My feeds are Associated Press, Denver Post, Ars, Slashdot, Boing Boing, Kottke, AV Club, and a handful of web comics that I like. I can skim the headlines, and if there are articles I want to read later, I use the "Send to Kindle" browser plugin to push them out to my Kindle. I would be sad to have to give up my leisure reading workflow if sites stopped supporting RSS.

Yup. The Old Reader

The Old Reader
The Old Reader (http://theoldreader.com/) works pretty well for me. Not quite as sophisticated or instantly speedy as Google was, and it can take a few more minutes to be up-to-date, but free and you can import your feeds, which you had already exported from Google Reader, right?

Re:Find a better Google Reader replacement...
I use The Old Reader, but I do login with OAuth. As far as I know, they have their own login box, I just don't use it.

Found a replacement
I have been using The Old Reader https://theoldreader.com/ for a little over a week now and it's great.

I've switched to RSSOwl
... and so far it's working great for me (RSSOwl). I also tried The Old Reader, and quite liked it except for its inability to mix all feeds into one continuous timeline.

Re:I've been trying feedly
I used Feedly for about a month after the Google Reader announcement, but the inability to export your feeds (as
.opml or otherwise) was a deal-breaker for me. Their prescribed manner for exporting is to log into your Google account and grab it from there, which won't be an option for much longer, and last I had checked, they had not promised that they'd add the ability, despite increasingly vocal requests from the community. So, rather than getting permanently locked into using Feedly, I went searching and ended up at The Old Reader, which seems to do a decent job. It doesn't have as much attention to detail, but it's clean, responsive, works well, and most importantly allows me to export my feeds. I wish it supported the ability to set per-folder and per-feed viewing options, rather than changing those options globally, and it'd be nice if it grabbed updates a bit more frequently, since I've noticed it can lag behind Google Reader by a few hours, but overall it's a better replacement for me than Feedly.
The runner-up for me as Comma Feed, which also seems to be decent, but it had some quirks that made it annoying to use (e.g. if you wanted to mark more than one article as unread, you had to click the keep unread buttons for them from bottom-to-top, since interacting with an article down lower on the list would mark everything higher on the list as read). It was also noticeably slower to load articles when you clicked on a folder.

Agreed! no stupid swiping back and forth or browser plugins like with Feedly...

So far down to...
- The Old Reader which replicates the look and feel of Google Reader reasonably well, is having some capacity issues at the moment, but is at least functional. Major issue is that it doesn't refresh feeds automatically on page refresh, which when following stuff throughout the day can be problematic
- Feedly which is having some capacity issues at the moment, and looks a bit too "new" and "shiny" for my liking, but functionally is OK. Has the advantage of refreshing quickly, and remaining in sync with Google Reader, which is good for the transitional phase.
I've been through about 4 or 5 readers since last night, and those are the only two that look promising for my use-case. Was tending toward Old Reader while Feedly was (to all intents and purposes) down, but now might be moving across to feedly... We'll see...!

Feedly looks ok
Feedly looks OK so far, http://theoldreader.com/ maybe?
Twitter is no replacement!

Still not using bloody Google+
Refugees are already saying that http://theoldreader.com/ is the replacement.
