Re:Awesome!
The Sisters of Mercy sort of did this to escape their contract with East West by releasing SSV-NSMABAAOTWMODAACOTIATW: "Screw Shareholder Value - Not So Much A Band As Another Opportunity To Waste Money On Drugs And Ammunition courtesy Of The Idiots At Time Warner". By providing any album they escaped their contract, even though it was unreleasable.
You could make this analogy that the record comnpany smeared the band with sticky stuff (the contract") and, as part of their escape they regurgitated this infected release of an album. It doesn't totally hold up, but it was the closest I could think of. More details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSV_(band) and http://www.thesistersofmercy.com/gen/ressv.htm -
The Sisters of Mercy
Nope.
The song "Vision Thing" by The Sisters of Mercy. It's even from the album "Vision Thing" . -
Generalize a bit?
You may have a point but assuming that having the mammon to post on
/. makes me rich enough to afford effective medicine is an arrogant estimate. Alright I make quite a bit of money as being a selfemployed journalist, but right now I use most of it to pay my taxes (this might look better next year though). I might be able to listen to Mp3s all day long but affording a cruise on a ship is waaay out of range at the moment. When I think about it, I guess comparing listening to music to a "live performance" shows a considerable lack of musicality. The same estimate would mean that a farmer back in the middle ages could sing himself. BUT, this doesnt make up for a VIP Special live performance of your favourite band, does it? (Hmmm..The Sisters of Mercy playing live at my birthday barbecue...sweet, but wont happen).
Whats more having a cellphone, email, a car and all that only means that I HAVE TO HAVE it. Everyone expects me to be able to drive 50miles a day to come to work and being able to reach me anytime, everywhere. So this means most things loose a lot of appeal when they are used by the masses. In fact they might turn into the opposite, meaning what once was there to make your live easier makes it easier to control you.
I am not whining here, I like tech and I like having central heating/air condition but your post is a bit too general. The second part of the post is totally random. And whats more: time and money are limited ressources.

Stupid laws are there to be broken. You'll need more jails too, for warez kiddie felons to store. Read this lengthy interview with Andrew Eldritch of Sisters fame. Actually just read this part:
At any given time, two million Americans are in jail, and only two states will let them vote while they're there. America puts more of its people in prison than any other country in the world, apart from Rwanda. I'm not going to get into the many iniquities of America's mass-incarceration policy right now, but it's worth noting that the slope of the pitch is increased by the so-called War On Drugs, which has systematically contravened the Universal Declaration On Human Rights and the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Amendments to the American Constitution in its drive to ensure that one third of all black American men will spend some of their life in prison. And a lot of Hispanics. (And more than a few white people.) In a quarter of American states (including Florida), nobody with a felony conviction is ever allowed to vote again. Other US states make it possible, but difficult, to regain the right to vote after a felony conviction. In Florida, one third of the black male population already cannot vote. Half a million people are disenfranchised in this way in Florida alone. Bush "won" the American election by "winning" Florida by 537 votes. Go figure.

Ancient and Gothic...
According to their website The Sisters of Mercy still use ruggedised portable 486s running DOS 3.3 and Voyetra Sequencer Plus to power Doktor Avalanche for live shows. Sequencer Plus was first released in about 1987. They claim it's only crashed twice.
