For anyone who doesn't want to load that page up, it linked a very interesting TIME article here. I suggest reading it -- in the Western world, the whole dollars-for-Diablo-items routine is normally as bad as this gets, but this is (if true) several steps beyond that entirely.

I tell you, I just don't understand the animosity toward this amazing technology. I was hoping the subject would come up again today after people had actually SEEN it, but no such luck. For those of you who haven't seen it in action: this machine actually keeps balance. It reproduces an extremely intricate function of our brain and nervous system. Here's what the story on Time.com says:

Pulling off this trick requires an unholy amount of computer power. In every Segway there are 10 microprocessors cranking out three PCs' worth of juice. Also a cluster of aviation-grade gyros, an accelerometer, a bevy of sensors, two batteries and software so sophisticated it puts Microsoft to shame.

If that's not news for nerds, I don't know what is. Non-closed-minded people should check out the story at the link above. The rest of you can carry on with the discussion about which amazing new game you can play while your fat ass is plastered to the couch.

Well, since it seems to be controlled largely by sensing your balance, perhaps three wheels would have made it too stable?

Read the article at Time[time.com]. The impression I get is that you lean forward slightly, which presumably makes it start to tip forward, which is sensed by the gyros, and it starts moving forward. With three wheels, you'd have to use pressure sensors or something to sense this, and it would be much less nature. It wouldn't tie in with your natural balance.

I belive the article mentioned 3 to 4 times walking speed, which does not mean 40mph unless you "walk" alot faster than the rest of us.

There is a big difference there... It was also mentioned that being hit by one of these was like being hit by someone walking.

NOTE: It was also reviewed by the Consumer Product Safety Commission which gave it a good rating.

Danger? Yes, but not like you make it out to be.

Stealing? The article also mentioned the security this thing has built into to prohibit just this thing.

As for bugs? Just less food I have to buy at the store...:)

Yes, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before someone hacks the Segway to run LINUX. Hopefully it won't cause any traffic fatalities.

What I really want to see is a pool of hireable Segaways (like a Taxi) connected to a network, that autopilot themselves to your GPS-mobile-phone determined location. *THAT* will revolutionize city transportation.

It doesn't have an engine but it has two electric motors per wheel (4 total). Each wheel is independent so it can turn on a dime (no axel). Also, if one motor goes out the thing can still work with just the other one. It also has redundant "sisterboards". Also, the gyroscopes/accelerometers (5) are redundant in that their results are checked against each other.

Moller's aircar as an invention of the year? This guy has been hawking this thing for more than 30 years and has yet to come up with more than a wild spec. sheet and some fancy marketting. What the heck is up with journalism in America!? This "invention of the year" has to be the dumbest thing on the list, including "IT", which is pretty dang stupid too, since the editors have no idea what "IT" is.
Unless of course you want to count shares and preorders in Moller as a successful scam, but then you'd have to admit that this was invented long before the year 2001.

Yeah, it's listed on Time as well. Apparently the details that were leaked made a lot of people nervous and some major investors pulled out.

Another thing was the book deal that Dean Kamen made with Steve Kemper (Harvard Business School). Kemper leaked what could have been details; in the book proposal and that caused Dean to become very quiet about the whole matter.

In fact we still don't know what project Ginger could be. I could very well be something like Ginger from the Civilisation Earth series (by Harry Turtledove, a continuation of the World War series). to time

Another weird thing: ESPN.com had a feature in their baseball section about the National League pennant race of 1951. They included excerpts of Don DeLillo's novella "Pafko at the Wall," which was the framework for his novel Underworld. ESPN had a link to Amazon.com selling "Pafko at the Wall," which I clicked because I didn't know it was available separately. It didn't have any reviews, so I looked to see what the readers had to say about Underworld.

Since I've read that book, I probably should've remembered its cover. But, I didn't. Here it is. Compare to this, which got a 2-page spread in Time's special 9-11 issue.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying about those in power using this threat to attack internal things they don't like, but I found it interesting that, considering the supposed strict beliefs of these terrorists, some of them apparently spent time in a strip club in Florida. Time article

If this is true, and it pertains to attitudes that more than just a few of these people have, perhaps the story about secret porn communication isn't so far fetched.

(personally, I still think it is a bogus story, but that's just me)
