Re:No 1080 support?
A modern-day browser like Chrome with Flash will not run properly on just 512MB of RAM
Chrome without Flash, on the other hand, will run fine. I used to run Tiny Core Linux on a Wyse terminal with 64MB RAM, and it was fine for general web browsing. Opera also ran ok.

Re:LiveCD?
I've recently become enamored with Tiny Core Linux. It seems ideal for this situation, because it includes so little by default (which is why I'm using it for a VM hosting a single application). It's very easy to make your own custom LiveCD version, including only, for example, a JVM, a testing application, and X.

Re:Version Control Everything
While the above is slanted towards Linux, there is no reason why this can't work on windows too.
TinyCoreLinux - http://www.tinycorelinux.com/
It is more up-to-date than DSL, and has an easy-to-use package manager. -

Re:Less.
Start with TinyCore Linux, add only the parts you want (by default, it comes only with a WM, a dock, and a control panel), and have exactly the OS you desire. It's trivially easy to modify, boots in about 3 seconds on my Intel Classmate off an SD card, runs entirely in memory, and starts at 10MB.

Re:Here are two.
DSL works well. It's 50 MB, can boot off a USB flash stick, and comes with its own virtual environment for running within MS Windows. It's probably missing a few features you will want for teaching a course in Linux, though.
I also like Puppy Linux. I was able to make an MP3 player out of a small thin client computer and this OS. I just had to modify a few shell scripts, and plug the TC into my home stereo.
Exactly what I was thinking. This too http://tinycorelinux.com/ I run it on my PII.

Re:And presumably all this will be done....
Yea, because Linux and Ubuntu are both the same word.
Linux is not bloated. Some distros may be, but that doesn't mean shit.

Re:When you have a machine from that era...
16MB RAM, yes, but it needs a lot more diskspace. For those who need a really small linux that fits into the 16MB RAM flash disk of their servers, I can only recommend Tiny Core Linux. It doesn't really come with much except for the basic tools, X11, and a fast graphical installer for everything else, includeing for example Firefox 3.5.3 or OpenOffice.org 2.3.1.

Re:Chrome OS is Linux with a New UI
I'm guessing something like tinycore where most of the os is actually non writable.

...boots very fast from a CDROM. It would be much faster from a hard disk or SSD.
