Re:Bah to the SG-1 retooling
The entire character seems to be pandering to the same crowd that 7-of-9 was in Voyager.
Yeah, because that's never been done on SG-1 before, right?
Claudia Black's character in SG-1 is a con artist, and uses the sex appeal to help work it. Nothing wrong with that as motivation for her to dress like that. As for worst episode of season 8, I'm going to have to go with the "holodeck malfunction"-esque plot of the one where Teal'c is trapped in that game. Or, from a "what the hell are you on?!" moment bad, Carter playing along with RepliCarter enough to give the replicators the ability to resist the Ancient weapon was terrible. That SHOULD have been, Teal'c and Carter step through the gate to to meet RepliCarter, Teal'c raises gun, BOOM! end of that threat. -

France offering 16Mbit for 30E/month.
I think tiscali.fr is offering 16Mbit for 30Euros/month in France already. The only screwup seems to be that 1st) they do not tel anywhere on the mage its clearly 16Mbit/sec eventhough from people feedback it is and 2nd) its only available in big cities
... But honestly I was quite surprised when I first saw that... For those of you who read french: http://register.tiscali.fr/forfaits/signup.php -
Re:In other news...
I must respectfully disagree. Lilo and Stitch was wonderful and not the stock issue Disney movie. (Admittedly, what they've done with the characters since then is truly sad.)
Actually, a few years ago, I heard a rumor (he said, protecting his ass) that Stitch was actually co-created by French comic book autor Loisel who had created a similar caracter a few years back...
Click here to see some images
The ressemblance isn't always easy to see, but I had noticed it when I first saw the trailor. A few months later, the "rumor" I was told was the Loisel had started the project with Disney and was eventually given the boot. Thoughts of going to court were forgotten since you need a lot of $$$ to tango with Disney.
Just felt like I had to say this... :-) -
Re:Yikes!
The main fear is that of a catastrophe occuring. That is a catastrophe in the mathematical sense. A very good way to familiarise yourself with the concept is by going through the first chapter of James Murray's Mathematical Biology, an Introduction.
In this, Murray discusses mainly the equilibria in population dynamics, i.e. what concentrations of foxes and rabbits are likely to be able to coexist in a regular pattern.
When a catastrophe occurs, the equilibrium has been so perturbed that the system is unpredictable until it finds a new one. Once this new equilibrium has been reached, it is not possible to "go back". This is called a hysteresis effect.
Population dynamics is very similar to weather in that sense.
If you're wondering why global warming is bad, suppose we produce a sufficient ripple in the system (e.g. through rapid increase in carbon monoxyde concentrations) to initiate a catastrophe, which brings to say five degrees centigrade hotter or lower on average. This would have such monstruous consequences for the planet it's very hard to imagine.
For some extreme predictions, see Hubert Reeves' three scenarii (unfortunately I was unable to find this information in english, apparently Reeves' book Mal de Terre (Earthake) has not been translated into English) -
Re:Drugs and ANY SPORTBikes are no more affected by drugs than Baseball, Football, Soccer, track and field, swimming, you name it, there are drugs. It's only the sports that crack down on drug use that fight with the immage problem, such as the Olympics and Tour de France.
How is this insightful? Cycling, and TdF in particular have a very long history of doping. Of 29 winners, only 2 didn't have (known) problems of doping one day or another (and that includes none the winners who won 5 times). In the 1960s, the racers of the TdF went even on strike to protest an anti-doping regulation (on the ground that people should be free to what they want with their body - which is what they could indeed do before the regulation).
Doping in cycling dates back from 19th century. When you see sanctions of only "3 month suspension" for doping, something is very wrong indeed.

Re:Do you realise Ritalin is Speed?
In the case of someone who has ADHD, they lack a certain brain chemical. Ritalin replaces that brain chemical to normalize the level in the brain and help with ADHD.
I'll believe that shite when I see a comprehensive proof, including gene sequences, protein morphologies and chemistries, and a comprehensive simulation of the brain in question. Given that placebo tends to have an efficacy rate around 30% for mind-altering drugs, anybody making statements about chemical imbalances is talking out their ass. The drug clomipramine causes some people to have orgasms when they yawn. What, those people were low on the come-when-you-yawn neurotransmitter?Truth be told, nobody has much of an idea WTF happens to make the brain do anything, nonetheless what causes it to do odd things. "Research" involves randomly cooking up new chemicals in the lab and seeing what they do to living brains.

Re:I always wondered
More information than you really wanted to know about Clarus, including references to the infamous TN13 and 1031. Should you care to read them, Google is your friend. Note that the sex of Clarus is not disclosed in Technote 31, with gender neutral pronouns being used throughout.

air nitrogen laser works, thoughThe site is a hoax, but the laser is real and could have been developed using Victorian techniques.
Here is a modern description. You can put one together for a few dollars. It delivers nanosecond pulses of UV laser light that you can use to excite dye lasers and do other neat stuff with.
