Re:Nothing new
You're not looking hard enough. Wikipedia has also been available in Tomeraider format for a while now.

TomeRaider does this for Pocket PCs
Yeah, TomeRaider costs money, which already marks it as a loss against the "thrifty" slashdot crowd
;) , but I think it's worth it.

They provide Wikipedia versions that you can use with their e-Reader. I bought one because I can use it on my Pocket PC, and it's just awesome having the Wikipedia available instantly, anytime. It's the fucking Hitchhiker's Guide version 0.1, gyat damn. =) -
Re:Wow!
There *IS* a PDA version using http://tomeraider.com/. The 2005 dump of the database weighs in at about 1.1GB without images (or less if you want a smaller, less complete set). For a 2007 version of the database, you can buy a version on DVD or process it yourself using the instructions here: http://infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/index.html.

Re:No net connection?
Take a look at this
http://www.tomeraider.com/#getBookDetails:616
I've had this on my PocketPC (JasJar) for about a year - it's an extract of ALL Wikipedia articles (without images), from (if I recall) Jan '06. Unfortuntately, it's not been updated for over a year - but even then it's superb. I also have a version that has less articles, but does include images. I use them daily...

What about TomeRaider?
I've been using Wikipedia on a PocketPC for at least a couple of years, thanks to Erik Zachte's project at http://infodisiac.com/Wikipedia/index.html which turns Wikipedia dump files into TomeRaider (http://www.tomeraider.com/)
.tr3 files. TomeRaider's also available for Palm, Windows and other formats. The Wikipedia file takes up 893Mb on my SD card and is probably the major reason I still bother with PocketPC. Looks like the download link's 404'd at the minute though, don't know if that's temporary. -
Re:Portable wikipedia anyone?
Who needs Apache and MySQL, this should do the job:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:TomeRaider_ database
And it's only 537Mb, but hey, gotta find a use/justification/excuse for a 1Gb SD card somehow. It's a Tomefile designed for the ebook reader TomeRaider (http://www.tomeraider.com/ ) and this reader works on PalmOS, PocketPC, EPOC and Windows.

PocketPC and uBook or MobiPocket or TomeRaiderI have had the best success with three reader applications on my most recent PocketPC (A Dell Axim X5).
uBook is a free, full-featured book reader that is my current main reader. Versions are available for Windows as well as PocketPC.
MobiPocket Reader because I paid for several of their dictionaries (Oxford)
TomeRaider because I have a current copy of the Wikipedia with me at all times. It's an amazing, free resource. You have to compile your own version using the existing Perl tools, but it isn't that hard.
I like my Dell Axim X5 because it:
was reasonably cheap (I paid about $250 for it on eBay)
has both a CF and SD expansion slot (although just a standard SD slot, not a SDIO slot)
has a portrait screen with a nice backlight

Re:Sony Clie for me.
I was lucky to score an early version of TomeRaider. This allows me to take (or create) any
.txt file and export it as a Palm database file. -
Re:Palm format?
There are several readers available, many of which are freeware or open source. Http://www.palm-press.com/ has more info, as does
http://www.peanutpress.com and there's even a Slashdot article on it
