Re:TTC
For those of you not familiar with the TTC, it's the transit system in Toronto.
As for the station refered to in the parent, it was called Lower Bay (or Bay Lower) station, and was shutdown after 6 months of use. It's now used mainly as a film set, and for training I believe. Since little to no maintenance is performed on it, it's easy to pass it off as a New York subway station :)
THIS page is a good read about exploring the TTC tunnels (and lower bay), and THIS page gives a little bit of the history of lower bay. -
Well, good
and that they'll be putting Hollywood out of business, possibly within the next three years."
Hollywood needs to be put down. They better stop paying their super stars enormous amounts of money and start behaving like real businesses. BTW. I just watched "The Transporter" at Famous Players. I am really sorry I went - what a rip off.
I put a small review of the movie
right here under title "Pathetic" and there are other reviews there that indicate what this movie is like.
I personally have not seing a great movie in theaters since the Matrix. Even LOTR did not give me the same effect as the Matrix.
I just want to see Solaris (coming out in November) and the next 2 films of the Matrix, and then it can all go to hell. -
Re:Awesome!
Maybe I can answer some of your questions...
can any local residents recommend some geeky places for us to visit?
The three main things that I can think of are
Playdium - a big arcade. There used to be one in downtown Toronto, but it doesn't seem to be listed on their web page. Either way, the Mississagua one isn't too hard to get to if you have a car.
Canada's Wonderland - a theme park. Good for a day's worth of entertainment.
You also might be interested in the Ontario Science Centre
Also, how is the night life there? clubs, chicks, beer?
All great! I usually check out toronto.com for that stuff. It's a decent website.
Are there gonna be any lan parties?
Maybe. I don't know. I've reserved a residence for participants who want to stay on campus and it does have ethernet, but I still have to talk to the computing people to arrange for the connectivity to be activiated. So while I can't make any promises, it's pretty likely you'll be able to arrange something.
Drop me a line if you want to know anything else about the venue.

Re:The Canadian Connection?
they might as well have hit Toronto because it feels the same.
I work at a tower 6km North of the downtown core in Toronto, and every 10 minutes during the entire morning, I was looking over my shoulder to see if 1st Canadian Place was still standing.
I kid you not.
BTW: 1st Canadian is taller than the perspective in that shot leads you to believe. The camera is a lot closer to the CN tower than the downtown core. -
Tick of TorontoWhen I read this my first thought was:
Man is Toronto going to be ticked.
They are very fond of their tower. See CN Tower

Great Place To Live: TorontoOkay, I know you were most likely wanting information about destinations outside North America. I feel that as a resident of Toronto, however, it's my duty to plug it as much as I can.
So here goes nothing:
- Clean streets and subways
- Great value for the US dollar
- Government-funded health care system
- The UN just ranked Canada the best place to live for the 7th year in a row
- Low crime rate, safe streets (Chicago has about the same population and land area and has around 1000 murders a year compared to Toronto's 75 or so on a bad year.)
Here's a great info page about Toronto. (An exerpt: "Toronto has nine months of winter and three months of poor skating -- at least that's what it feels like.")
Seriously, though: our winters will put hair on your chest, but the great summers make up for them!
Here's the City of Toronto's official web site.

Here's another great link to go along with the last two.
