Re:still no secure boot since last article
i only buy toshiba laptops with win7 (i won't be buying a laptop with win8). i've never had a problem getting linux on. maybe you're holding them wrong too.
if you're stupid enough to buy a laptop with win8 with the intention of putting linux on, you're also holding it wrong.
when all laptops have uefi and lock linux out, then maybe i'll bitch. at the moment there is no sign of that though, and given microsoft's foray into surface, i imagine their traditional oems may be looking to diversify to reduce their risk exposure. a few oems are becoming more linux friendly (even if they don't supply preinstalled linux)... http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/

Re:"Shelf space" is obsolete
Christ, I have a pretty ripping laptop, but I can't play Quake on it.
Do you mean Quake 4? Because I've got a Libretto 100CT and it plays Quake just fine.
And by no stretch of the imagination could that Libretto be called a 'pretty ripping laptop'. It barely runs Windows 2000.

Yes.
Sun
HP
IBM
Dell
The first 3 I know are for real. I don't know much about Dell, but much more prominenet like that you can't have it.
And altough other manufacturers (shame on them) are less helpful (Toshiba...) they may be weaking up to the reality of the marketplace that Linux is becoming. You would need to hack far less since many hardware manufacturers are realising Linux is here to stay. You did not have a resource like Toshiba's a few years ago.
The old pitiful excuse not to use Linux argueing there is no hardware officially certified to run it, should be soundly ignored. -
Re 266Mhz Pentium I - I have oneI bought a Toshiba Protege' 3015 a few years back that had a "Pentium I 266 mobile" cpu. not common, but there is such a thing as a PI-266.

There is a patch, AND a few suggestions. Will try it soon.
Thanks for the reply.

Re:Subliminal Linux bashing?
Do you want Linux pre-installed Libretto? Here you are.(in Japanese)

toshiba sells linux on their laptops, too
He forgot to mention that Toshiba will sell you a dual-boot Linux and Windows laptop.
Just another way that technology is ahead in Japan.
