Tree Wave did this with a dot-matrix printer...
...some time ago.
Check them out here -
tree wave
Y'all need to check out tree wave, a Dallas band that makes really compelling music using C64s and dot matrix printers.
Their single "Sleep" has been in my playlist for years. -
Re:Great...Now I Don't Need a 7.1 Surround System
Tree wave may find it useful. I think they do use dot matrix printers for some of their percussion sounds. Music with hack value.

Band which uses old computers/printers etc...
The band treewave uses old computers, game consoles and an Epson LQ500 as their instruments. I find it amazing what they can do with old equipment like this.

Another Cool Hack!
Yeah, I know why bother? But most of the time when new gaming hardware comes out it is only used to a fraction of its full potential before the next generation arrives. So part of me really thinks it's cool to squeeze out some of that perhaps untapped potential like this. Maybe Tree Wave will play something with this.

something that a musician would WORK with
You sure about that?
(that site includes info about a band that makes music with such 'instruments' as a "1977 Atari 2600 game console, a 1986 portable 286 PC, a 1983 Commodore 64 computer, and a 1985 Epson dot matrix printer." good music, too. I've seen them live in my hometown and they're amazing. /. the mp3s.) -
Music and DocumentaryWith the availability of personal computers powerful enough to do video editing, and digital cameras that are "good enough", expect to see more documentaries on many different niche subjects. The life cycle of the keyboard, design of the 74LS244 chip, the inventor of the 2.44MB floppy disc and why the market never adopted it. More documentaries is good; I would like to see more computer history recorded for future generations.
At this point, however, it's comparable to documenting every contributor to steam engines and printing presses -- we don't know what's important and what's not to people fifty years in the future. Cisco routers use XModem and ZModem to transfer IOS images to the firmware -- seeing interviews with the people who designed the protocol helps me see their decision-making process at the time, and design better protocols today.
Also, the music used in the documentary is composed by Paul Slocum, who uses an Atari 2600 along with dot-matrix printers and other assorted 80's computer hardware in the composition of his music. Band website and random interview, along with Atari 2600 programming for more information.

Reminds me of 'thrashing' the Atari 2600
Remember the odd results you could get thrashing the reset game switch on the Atari 2600? Also by partially removing the cartridge while playing, or just when you turned the system on with the cart not contacting well (happens with most systems, especially when the contacts get worn/dirty) There's an interesting example of this on Tree Wave's Cabana EP one of the videos on the CD has music put to someone/something hitting the game select switch faster and faster with interesting animated results.

Re:Wow, That's Awful
It doesn't matter how long it takes to make it, it still sounds like absolute shit.
I can spend four hours gluing sequins on a kazoo, it's not going to help.
Tree wave does something similar to this with a C64, atari 2600, compaq portable and a epson dot matrix printer.. but it actually sounds like.. music, sort of. It has like.. notes and stuff.
