Re:Not about leverage or influence
Nothing's proving Russia right when there's a wall of evil doings proving the counter. Snowden is one of the few things they can genuinely cling on to.
For all of the US' wrongs there's nothing changing the fact that Russia is an evil empire, well, that's a lie, it's not an empire any more thank god, it just wants to be, but it's still evil.
Let's just look at a few of the things they've done this year alone, let's start near the beginning of the year where the scene is that there is a popular uprising against Russian influenced Yanukovych, during these protests a number of key protesters were abducted by men with accents from Russia itself, some were left to die but managed to live to tell the tale:

Others weren't quite so lucky:

The uprising was eventually successful, in response, Russia sent in breach of the Geneva convention soldiers into Crimea posing as civilians and annexed the territory, despite the fact that only a few weeks prior it was clear that there was nothing like majority support for joining Russia:
http://www.cityam.com/blog/139...
Coupled with the unverifiable "poll" and the followon fuckup by Russian bureaucrats in posting the actual results that show there was actually no majority support for joining Russia it became fairly obvious it was an illegal annexation of foreign territory. Of course, it didn't stop there. The Crimean Tatar population that did not want to join Russia have since been treated like Jews in Nazi Germany circa 1939 with their houses being marked:

Other Tatars have simply been disappeared by death squads:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/maga...
The rest of them? Well, they just get silenced and beaten:

If this sort of thing doesn't send chills down your spine as to how close it is to the way the Nazis operated then there's something wrong with you.
Since then of course there's been the case of Russian separatists in Eastern Ukraine, the debate goes on about whether they're genuinely Ukrainians that want to join Russia, or whether they're simply Russian special forces, or a mix of both, but either way, what's not in dispute is the following and that Russia wholeheartedly supports them:
- They admitted having Buk and shooting down MH17 believing it was a Ukrainian military transport:
http://www.reuters.com/article...
http://www.themalaysianinsider...
- They've been abducting, torturing, and parading civilians:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/new...
- They've admitted to carrying out summary executions:

- And they've been preventing all males from leaving the warzones they've been part of the

Re:Yes, yes, and...
The war memorial was moved to a Russian cemetery, not destroyed. This was far more appropriate considering that most Estonians felt that Stalin was FAR worse than Hitler. Sheesh, 10% of the Estonian adult population was deported to gulags and death camps by the Russians. Under the Nazis, if you weren't Roma, gay, or Jewish, you were OK. [I'm not saying that the Nazis were nice folks. On the contrary, they were horrid too.]
So the bear rescued the rabbit from the falcon, the bear still tried eating the rabbit. It's either disingenuous or ignorant to claim that the rabbit ought to be thanking the bear.

Italian wiretapping
Wiretapping also works: the Al Qaeda cell in Italy that was planning to outdo 9-11 was caught by wiretapping.
I did some quick Googling, and couldn't find answers to an importantquestion about the wiretapping you seem to be holding up as justification for the current situation in the US: was the Italian wiretapping legal or illegal?. Maybe the Italian police got a warrant. Maybe Italian law doesn't require a warrant. Does anyone know?
-
Short memoriesSome perspective always helps with historical events. The Clinton era Echelon program involved much more extensive wiretapping than the current NSA program controversy.

Re:Perfectly demonstrates
Iran has endorsed Bush for President.
Your sig is incorrect, sir. Here is the full quote, not truncated by the Associated Press:
" It makes no difference for us which of the two parties wins the elections," Iran's top national security official Hassan Rowhani said in an interview on state television.
"We have not seen any good coming from the Democrats, so we won't be happy if the Democrats win," he said.
So, you see, Iran's government simply considers America "the Great Satan" no matter who wins on November 2. I suggest you change your sig so you look less misinformed in the future. -
Re:No differnces? And to top that all off, now those terrorists have got high explosives that the US never bothered to secure.
http://www.turkishpress.com/news.asp?id=31787
"This is a first report. We do not know when -- if those weapons did exist at that facility -- they were last seen, and under whose control they were last in," Pentagon spokesman Larry DiRita said.
"It's very possible -- certainly it's plausible -- that it was the Saddam Hussein regime that last had control of these things," he told AFP.
No way! Saddam might have last had control of those weapons? I'm shocked, just shocked. Isn't that why we invaded Iraq? Don't forget the weapons weren't just stacked up waiting for the US to come along and inventory. The US has already destroyed hundreds of tons of weapons. They've got more work to do.
You make it sound like the military was hanging out playing baseball while the terrorists were looting the safe. But that's not what the story seems to be now, does it?

Re:Geek Vote?
How does your binary worldview integrate Iran's endorsement of Bush?
It integrates it by getting news that isn't solely based on what the AP reports. Like that super conservative AFP! The AP left out the most important quote of the "interview". When read together with the other quotes the Iranian official is clearly stating that for them it really doesn't matter.
From the AFP story
TEHRAN, Oct 19 (AFP) - It makes no real difference to Iran whether US President George W. Bush or Democrat contender John Kerry wins the presidential elections, a senior Iranian official said Tuesday.
"It makes no difference for us which of the two parties wins the elections," Iran's top national security official Hassan Rowhani said in an interview on state television. -
Re:Alien thunder
Iran did not endorse Bush. Iran stated that they don't care who wins. Your story, like most other ones, were based on the original AP story which left out the most important quote of the whole interview to push the idea that Iran endorsed Bush. The AFP story includes the quote.
Basically the Iranians were stating that while the republicans were more likely to push for military action/pressure against Iran, Democrats also have a history of being against Iran, so it doesn't matter to them who wins. It's a lose-lose situation. -
This is especially interesting in light of
Brazil's possible nuclear capability. It is likely that this capability means that Brazil is capable of delivering a nuclear payload a much longer distance than either Iran or North Korea.
I am not claiming that Brazil should be lumped in with either of these two nations, however it is an interesting opportunity to test a dual purpose launch vehicle and perhaps reflect the first of the 'developing' countries probable intercontinental capabilities.
Given recent trade tensions between Brazil and the USA I have no doubt that this is turning a few heads in the commerce / state department. -
Sexism
In related news.. 39% of turkish women say its ok for their husbands to beat them for arguing, burning the food, or attempting to trade with a level 40 wizard..

Re:Nice Story! In case you missed one of my previous postings, Iran didn't endorse Bush. Money quote:
"It makes no difference for us which of the two parties wins the elections," Iran's top national security official Hassan Rowhani said in an interview on state television.
"We have not seen any good coming from the Democrats, so we won't be happy if the Democrats win," he said.
We've got to nip this rumor in the bud. -
Re:Nice Story!> Iran came out in support of Bush
Except that they didn't. Here's the full quote that's not being reported by the Associated Press:
"It makes no difference for us which of the two parties wins the elections," Iran's top national security official Hassan Rowhani said in an interview on state television.
"We have not seen any good coming from the Democrats, so we won't be happy if the Democrats win," he said.
