Twinhead
You might want to take a look at the Twinhead http://usa.twinhead.com/. I haven't personally used one, but we did consider it, along with the Panasonic Toughbooks, for ruggized laptops.

Twinhead N1400I recently bought a laptop called an "ITC Ultraport R1000', which is actually a rebadged Twinhead N1400. The people at the shop (Arrow Computers, Perth, Australia) were kind enough to remove the WinXP licence from the package, and take a bit off the price.
(One of the main reasons I bought this computer was because the retailer gave me a brochure which listed Linux as a supported operating system. At the very least, this allows you to take it back if Linux doesn't go)
Linux runs well on it, after a bit of a play with the drivers (support from the company hasn't been great, but it's easy enough to get everything working). It's a P4 1.7GHz (1.2 on batteries), VGA & SVideo out, a firewire port, 14.1" screen at 1024x768, 3 USB2.0 ports, CDR/DVD drive, onboard ethernet & modem, 1 PCMCIA slot and optional internal 802.11b. It's small, light, and it looks cool.
Best of all, it was one of the cheapest Notebooks I was looking at, $2800 AUD

Re:heatpipe
Twinhead laptops use a heatpipe. I've got one. It works just like you say--and the laptop runs fanless, which makes it very quiet.

There are silent laptops on the marketTwinhead makes laptops that normally run without a fan. Their computers use a proprietary heat pipe for cooling. (There is a fan, but it only goes on under extreme circumstances.) Why go to the trouble of building one?
I got a Twinhead for that reason, and have been glad that I did.

Heat pipes have been in use for a long timeI've got a 1998 Twinhead laptop that uses heat pipe technology for cooling. The laptop also has a fan, which almost never goes on, due to the heat pipe. (It was for the quiet fanless running that I bought a Twinhead.)
Twinhead advertising claims that their heat pipe technology is patented. I've no further details and couldn't find anything relevant on their web site.

Quiet--FANLESS--is TwinheadI have a very quiet environment. For me to preserve that, it is critical is that the laptop be quiet. So, I got a Twinhead.
The Twinhead that I got does have a fan in it. But the fan is thermostatically controlled. I had the computer for months before finding the right (wrong?) conditions to trigger fan operation. In practice, the Twinhead runs fanless.
Twinhead does not have the best prices. I found that Dell had clearly better price/performance. But Dell has a loud fan.
BOTTOM LINE: if you want quiet, the Twinhead is well worth it!
Question: does anyone know of other PC laptops that also have fanless operation? (I will be getting a new laptop in a few months; so I'd like to know about alternatives.)

Twinhead laptops run VERY quiet--without a fanI have a really quiet home environment, where I use my computer, and quietness was a critical factor in deciding which computer to buy. I chose a Twinhead laptop. These run without a fan (though they have a thermostatically-controlled fan, as a backup for their proprietary heat pipe cooling system). So Twinhead laptops are very quiet.
I don't work for Twinhead, and have no affiliation, but I can recommend them. Curiously, their advertising makes no mention of their computers being fanless.

Favorite Desktop-replacement: Twinhead (it's quietIn answer to the main question in the news items, my favorite desktop-replacement laptop is a Twinhead. It doesn't have the best specs or the best price. What it does have is a patented heat-dissipation technology that means the fan hardly ever goes on--I used one for about half a year before doing something that needed a fan.
Twinhead's are thus extremely quiet. For anyone using a laptop in a quiet environment, it's worth considering. Most models also have both FD and CD integrated, which I find useful. Does anyone know of other fanless laptops?
