Paranoia...
There has always been paranoia at new technologies. So, we have the ability to do something new. People were scared sh*tless at the concept of computers and robots. Hell, Asimov had a robot running the world. This didn't please too many people. Nevertheless, we've seen 1998 pass, and soon 2001 will pass. I still don't see no sinister talking robots.
In my opinion, all this has to do with a lack of appreciation for the status quo. People do NOT want to change. No matter how quick, or new, the technology, people will always be slow and cautious to adopt it. That being said, we'll all probably be dead before the 'Gattaca' scenario could become a real possibility... most probably from CRT tube radiation. ;)

Effects of development in general
Interestingly, the Los Angeles Times had an article sort of on this, on March 5th. In the business section, James Flanigan discussed the need to "build up infrastructure, in telecommunications, pollution control, medicine, air transportation and many other fields." According the article, India has a labor force of 314 million, and 300,000 high-tech workers. The middle-class is about 250 million with an income from $10-$25,000/yr. He suggests foreign business should be interested in India.
However, I find, social ramification of NGOs and MNCs of more interest in these LDCs. (i.e. What is the effect of Coca-Cola, IBM, and Honda in India?)

Re:yeep.
maybe true... but, I've seen alot of students plunged into using CDE or IRIX and walking away without every having to touch a shell. Linux can easily have any one of the ultra-GUI managers with KDE, and all is good for many desktop users. I mean, have you ever seen a user of Windoz NOT develop a theory about why it won't boot after two days?!

Re:Microsoft learning??
Yeah right... I bet anti-trust cases, and bad publicity have nothing to do with it. They don't really want to work with competitors?!

Re:It's the SUV of rockets!
Well... this may not be too far off the mark with lobbyist of various countries vying for their rockets and launching facilities. Cellular phones, pagers, etc. are definately raising the competition in this space. I'm just suprised Amazon hasn't patented the idea of a large cone shaped object using highly combustible fuel designed to carry payloads into space, yet.

Re:This was expected...
Not to mention that the whole thing has been going on for soo many years. I remember seeing Doom, or Duke Nuke'em, for the first time. All I could think was cool, how'd they do that?! Of course, once in university I was immediate to take graphics programming, in addition to picking BFG 9000s to shoot my college-mates.

Who needs censors?
Censorship on a word like fart?
This in light of the new law being proposed in Alabama requireing kids to refer to teachers as sir and ma'am
There seems to be a huge "traditional" movement in this country looking to enforce obedience. Wasn't this type stuff reserved for religious governments like the Ayatola in Iran?!

Re:And What Comes Next...
This may sound a bit scary, but the one of the main purposes of such a device was to aid gene therapy. So, if you think about the possible cancer cures out there... this may be a huge blessing. However, gene therapy may have some alternate destructive uses as well. I'm sure the FDA would intervene if anybody tried to go too far.
Personally, I think human dna mapping projects could be a lot scarier. Gattaca may have been an extrapolation of existing events at the time of it's creation, however, the predicition may not end up being too far off the mark!

Re:I still don't get it.
Money, money, money...
Controlled viewing implies that all the advertising is coming from that broadcaster. Furthermore, if no one else can re-broadcast it, then they can promote their own site, or affiliates site, which re-broadcasts all the shows. Once again, a case of focusing eyeballs...

Re:Persecution of Amazon
I don't think anybody said that they didn't like Amazon the 'book service'. It's actually a quite good system. It's Amazon the litigious two-faced company everyone is concerned with...
Hmmm... Did you happen to catch the "Silicon Valley Summit" on MSNBC this weekend?! Jeff Bezos comes out and says that we all should be weary of the abuses of the patent system. Then, "spit" in eveybodies face when he said that he doesn't think that Amazon is abusing that system!
Well, funny how alot of CEOs are quick to denounce other company's bad practices, and always seem to think their own are "special" cases which aren't really bad.

Re:Disney...
Hmmm.. there is actually a growing trend now with StereoScopic IMAX films. (i.e. non-red-blue 3D large format films) I've worked on a couple this past year, and with the IMAX release of parts of Ants (DreamWorks/PDI) it would seem that all Pixar, Disney FA, etc. would all start going Large Format in the not too distant future, too.

Re:Masterpieces on-line?
There is another problem... may ancient works are illegally smuggled out of other countries and sold at auction at Sothebys all the time. One would speculate that eBay may encounter a whole new set of legal problems trying to sell those works internationally where laws vary by country?!

Associates?
Amazon doesn't call their affiliates "affiliates", they call them associates?
Is this a different program, or are they just attacking everyone?

Re:patents
No... no... no... They're trying to trademark the word book. See that way they get book.com, book.net, and book.org away from the real domain name owners for FREE. Thank you, ICANN.

And the winner of the rotten apple award for most undefendable patents is: AMAZON
What does this do to Microsoft's ClickTrade Affiliate Program? How about BeFree?
