Re:Second Stage was successful..
There's one more burn, I believe, in several hours.
This was an amazing accomplishment and it makes me excited for the next few years!
I found this link from the ISS showing the launch. Fast forward to 47 minutes. http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/112609768
I was waiting to see a stream of the third burn and I didn't see anything posted All I found is a tweet from Musk that it was successful. I haven't yet found any video of the event or any actual news reporting it.
If I were to have any complaint about the event is that a camera feed was not made available continually from pre-launch to final burn when the craft left Earth orbit several hours later.
-
Re:Seems obvious
Also, if you ever try to watch the feed in question: http://www.ustream.tv/embed/17... it goes down about 25 times per hour, especially when approaching populated areas. There's nothing suspicious in the coincidence that the feed went down when this image appeared - I'd be more surprised if we got 5 minutes of continuous coverage, of anything, from the ISS feed.
-
Camera Glare
Review the source video (http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/85741557/) and you will see that the same phenomenon happening at the beginning of the video when the feed cuts, but also at 1h32m to 1h34m. This coincides with the sunrise moving towards the top left of the screen. Even more proof is that the sun glares from the event happening at the beginning of the video can be lined up to the "craft".
This is not news. This is bullshit. Why can't reporters do their own research now debunk news before throwing it to the masses?

public science night at Ames Research Center
Tickets are free, but registration required, see http://www.nasa.gov/ames/events/ladee-science-night, they say this will still occur even if launch is postponed. Ames held a science night for Curiosity and it was fantastic, carnival atmosphere with key people presenting the mission and discussing the science. There were exhibits and they provided free water (may be expensive but much cheaper than dealing with medical emergencies from dehydrated people). However, this is 5 pm to 9 pm, right on commute times where hwy 101, 237, and 85 converge (dang orbital mechanics).
I expect Ames video group will stream at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasa-arc (they have events shown here even when NASA-TV does not). They did the same for IRIS, footage is there to watch for those that didn't see it live.

This is why I believe C/C++ to JavaScript translation is the core issue regarding compilation to JavaScript" -
Re:In Illinois?
They exist. Qik, UStream, and TapIn are among them. TapIn in particular was designed for protestors and recording authorities, and provides no means to delete footage on the recording device itself - it must be done from the user's account page, by which time the video will have been downloaded and redistributed beyond the user's (or the police's) ability to control.

Re:Water, or some other fluid?
Oh, and a couple relevant things I learned watching the news conference:
John Grotzinger sounded a lot more open to the possibility of there being preserved organics in these rocks than in that quote, but noted that the presence of water over long periods could have also oxidized the organics into CO2.
In response to Emily Lakdawalla's question specifically about whether they regretted driving on from this site without using other instruments, John said that having found several such outcrops so far makes them confident that they'll encounter more on the way to or at Glenelg (which promises to have other choices for materials to take samples from, too). And that if it turns out that they don't get any such opportunity, they can return to this site on the way back from Glenelg toward Mount Sharp (which is the significance of the name being a palindrome -- they'll pass it coming and going).

Re:Hugo Weeps
There are no (repeat: NO) exceptions being built into these bots, just the "FLICK THE SWITCH NOW" code.
Where did you get this information? Because it completely contradicts what UStream said a few days ago:
Users of our paid, ad-free Pro Broadcasting service “NOTE: UPDATED CLARIFICATION” ‘and those free broadcasters who notify Ustream in advance they have copyrights permissions (Ustream’s messaging to our broadcaster community how this process works is inadequate. We are resolving this now)’ are automatically white listed to avoid situations like this and receive hands-on client support.

I'm waiting for Amanda Palmer to write a song
I'm waiting for Amanda MacKinnon Gaiman Palmer to write a song about the incident. That would be cool. (I am assuming that Brad Hunstable, who by the way has deleted all the comments on his blog (at least one of them was vaguely supportive). would be less happy to have her turning her attention to him).

Re:It's Labour Day
Imagine if, rather than paying for a venue, a famous band just decides to play for free in a local park. Well, good news is that the show is free. Bad news, if it rains there's no shelter organised, if people arrive to mow the grass in the park then show's over, and if the police decide its' too noisy the amps will get turned off with no notice.
That's one way to spin this. The polar opposite would be something like this:
A band didn't want to pay for a venue, so they went do play for free in a local park. A local Italian restaurant owner (which may or may not be connected to the mafia) sends word that it would be a shame if electricity went out during the performance, and for a small fee, they would be glad to look over things so that nothing bad happens. The band refuses to pay, and then the electricity goes out during the show.
Now, I'm not saying that's a good analogy, it's most certainly not. But neither is yours: a malfunctioning bot looking for copyright infringement and gratuitously shutting down a stream is in no way equivalent to rain in a park during a public performance -- just like it's not at all comparable to being harassed by the mafia.
Moreover, UStream has already said that they will gladly disable that "copyright infringement searching bot" for any free stream owner that informs them that they own the copyright of what's being streamed -- see the "UPDATED CLARIFICATION" here. This makes it even clearer that the situation here is nothing like your analogy.
In other words: it was a huge fuck up from UStream, they recognize it and are trying to fix it.

Re:How much was Ustream paid?
The only thing Ustream did was to decide they didn't want to do a favor that potentially exposed them to being sued. I think they have every moral right to do so, and Worldcon has no one to blame except themselves.
No actually they (they as is 3rd party programs installed at the *IAA request or under threat of legal action for refusal) stopped the program in mid-stream, then threw up a banner stated the stream was blocked due to copyright infringement. Which was not only untrue, it was libelous and infringed on distribution rights.
On Sunday night, The Hugo Awards were streaming live on Ustream (The Hugo’s are like the Academy Awards for science fiction). Very unfortunately at 7:43 p.m. Pacific time, the channel was automatically banned in the middle of an acceptance speech by author Neil Gaiman due to “copyright infringement.” This occurred because our 3rd party automated infringement system, Vobile, detected content in the stream that it deemed to be copyrighted. Vobile is a system that rights holders upload their content for review on many video sites around the web. The video clips shown prior to Neil’s speech automatically triggered the 3rd party system at the behest of the copyright holder. Hugo Awards: An apology and explanation
I don't mind that the *IAA's protect their member's rights, but they claim damages on others, yet are held unaccountable for their errors, which I find morally reprehensible.

Ustream apology UPDATED
At first I thought: "Well, they should have bought UStream's Pro service in order to whitelist their broadcast, but an update to the founder's apology says that Ustream will whitelist free streams as well:
Users of our paid, ad-free Pro Broadcasting service NOTE: UPDATED CLARIFICATION and those free broadcasters who notify Ustream in advance they have copyrights permissions (Ustream's messaging to our broadcaster community how this process works is inadequate. We are resolving this now) are automatically white listed to avoid situations like this and receive hands-on client support.
http://www.ustream.tv/blog/2012/09/03/hugo-awards-an-apology-and-explanation//
PS: How are free streams supported? Do they have ads inserted into them, or what?
-
Re:usteam isn't responding.
Perhaps the WorldCon could claim breach-of-contract and sue to have their money refunded. That might be a possible avenue they could win.
Even if they win, the refund in this case would be ZERO because that's exactly how much WorldCon paid to ustream for streaming the event. There was no special contract with ustream, WorldCon CHOSE TO USE a free anonymous streaming account and that comes automatically with copyright-enforcement protection, this was explained by ustream on their blog:
http://www.ustream.tv/blog/2012/09/03/hugo-awards-an-apology-and-explanation/As background, our system works like this in order to support a large volume of broadcasters using our free platform. Users of our paid, ad-free Pro Broadcasting service are automatically white listed to avoid situations like this and receive hands-on client support.
translation: since WorldCon was not white-listed that means they decided to stream the live event without signing and paying for a dedicated contract with the broadcaster and as a result were applied the regular copyright filter that regular anonymous broadcasters were subjected to.

Re:Holy crap!
There's a video (in Japanese) that shows various testing they did with the LEAF. One of them was to have a hose pour water into the charge connector (skip to ~26min) as it was plugged and powered to test exactly that. Although the testing shows the CHAdeMO connector, not the J1772 plug Chuq's link shows, the level of safety is identical.
The J1772 standard is pilot-operated. Normally the cable is not powered at all. Then the cable is plugged in, the car sends a voltage signal to the EVSE which tests the connection and closes a relay to let the power flow. (The charger is in the car, the wall unit is called an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment - EVSE). Because of this, there is no danger of electrical shock while plugging in since there's no electricity until the connection is proven.
The connector is asymmetric and can't be connected backwards. Even if you could, since it's AC going through it it wouldn't matter much.
As a related aside, the LEAF can drive through 27 inches (700mm) of standing water without incident. Great video of this just after the part showing the connector water test.

Re:This is scary
EC: Are you in possession of that iPad?
BG: Yep.
EC: You are? All right, is there anything else you wish to say?Well, that seals it for me. TheRegister conjectured they arrested him to get his iPad. Looks like they were right. If something isn't on your person they need a warrant, or your permission. If it is on your person they can seize it if they arrest you.
It's a direct attack on the free press.
Well yeah, but I hope you aren't too concerned for the journalists here. This isn't going to be anything like a fair fight. The police arrested an assistant editor from one of the biggest newspapers in the country, and confiscated his equipment. They did this when he was doing his job, reporting on a mildly controversial topic. Journo's here are like journo's everywhere - they consider themselves a protected species when reporting the news. They're outraged, and are striking back in force. First they set up a web cam, capturing the department chief claiming "copying a picture is just like stealing a TV". Now stories appearing in every major Australian news outlet using that quote to the Queensland Police look like a mob of country bumpkins. Sadly that ain't hard. They are dredging up past mistakes like the Queensland Police trying to prosecute a man for paedophilia because he posted "child abuse" movie of a fully clothed man playfully swinging his fully clothed son through the air. Give them 24 hours and they will have column feet of this stuff over the country.
There ain't no question our police here can be as dumb as some of the dumbest on the planet, and this is yet more proof of that - if we needed any. Hell - it's entirely possible the guy who had his photo's shown to a crowd of 12 or so of his mates won't give a shit. But you know, in this case the police were just implementing the law without fear or favour. Hacking into a computer system to steal data is a crime in their jurisdiction. This guy they were collecting evidence about was undeniably doing that. Yes, they should have realised they were looking at the equivalent of a lock smith talking shop to other lock smiths and cut everybody a bit a slack. But were apparently didn't have a clue and so just followed the rule book. Normally this would be fixed as it moved though the system - just as the child swinging case was. Instead they going to be mauled in public for doing what I think is roughly the right thing - when you don't know what's going on just enforce the law as you understand it.

Re:This is worst than in the movies
In less than 30 seconds you could get under a table or desk and take cover. The most demanding thing in terms of time, manpower and resources in emergencies is the care of injured people, since is something that can't wait. Instead, the material loses can be dealt after the emergency with more planning and time, even if they demand more money. My city, Guadalajara, was struck by an industrial accident in 1992, more than 200 deaths and 12 km of destroyed streets, but the most pressing thing at that time was the care of injured people, the city emergencies services simply collapsed. I have been seeing this feed of NHK http://www.ustream.tv/channel/foxtokimekitonight and their earthquake alerts come so fast that when they switch to a live cam in the affected areas it is still quiet before being reached by earthquake's wave. But against a tsunami, you really need at least 15 minutes of warning to do anything meaningful.

Re:Barberich
By itself, video is still a one way street.
Sort of -- a few years ago I played around with ustream, and on my old Linux laptop (Slackware), Flash had no trouble at all streaming my webcam (two-way street). Despite the fact that Flash on Linux, uh, sucks, the fact that the V4L integration actually worked boggled my mind.
I did find it rather amusing that Flash would let me stream video from my laptop, but my machine was still too slow to play youtube videos (this was before youtube started supporting HTML5).
