Re:IT's not just students
I also got proof from my university. The dorms were using alot of bandwidth so we limited the traffic to 10Mb/s which made the dorms crawl like a snail (slower than 56k). Then we limited Morpheus/KaZaA packets... droped right down. It is shown in this graph. As you can see in about week 49 the bandwith was nearly cut in half. We used a program called packeteer to filter the packets and do QoS on them if you are wondering
Now the dorms are fast again. Just don't try Morpheus and KaZaA. Now as long as Peer to Peer filesharing programs don't start to encapsulate the data in HTTP packets we're ok! -
Starting my own chapter.
After seeing a couple of hacks appear here on
/. , I am half tempted to start my own chapter of the Hack group here at the University of Wyoming. Although it would just be a flagrant ripoff of MIT, it might give a couple talented engeneering students an excuse to something (instead of getting drunk!).
Would this bea good idea, or just looked down apon?
Would the University (or any school for that matter) be willing to accept the hack team as one of there own?
How do you recruit people to do it?
And most importantly: How would you fund such a project? Those hacks have to cost some money!
Well just an idea as I search though the hacks done at MIT. I'll look forward to your replies.

Re:Not talking about the "Average Joe"
Well as much as I dislike Microsoft you are wrong here. At the University of Wyoming we have a site license that allows us to install office and windows anywhere without worring about it.

Re: Mirror for moves and images
I set up apache on my dorm computer. It can handle a few people connecting up to it also. Also I need help with the content. Please get the good articles from around the net and i will post them.

Thanks,

Mirrror for movies and images.
Here is my contribution to the already crowed sites out there. Hopefully the University doesn't get too mad

Re:Easy. Babylon 5.
Thank you for the amazing breakdown. I myself am a Huge Fan of this series, and was watching since GROPOS. It's a must-see. Infact, the only series to actually come close to its glory has been Farscape, but still has not beat it just yet.
Some good sites to go to for Babylon 5 information and discussion:
The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5. A great reference source. It has THE most comprehensive episode guide for the series, it's movies, and its spinoff, Crusade. They Include a Synopsis, Notes, Comments from JMS, and other related information. The site also includes a B5 term encyclopedia, which can be beneficial for those who don't understand a term.
B5 Tech Reference. This site, while containing large amounts of fictional information, is a decent reference for anyone seeking information on the spacecraft of Babylon 5.
FirstOnes.com. While this is a shameless plug, If you want to talk with other babylon 5 fans, go there and visit the forums. You'll meet some interesting people from around the world. While it's primary mission has been abandoned (to raise the Babylon 5 Space Combat Simulator, Into the Fire, from the dead), it is being transformed into a source for everything Babylon 5. (well, that's the plan, at least =) )
Hyperspace Ship Guide. Another great reference page for the spacecraft of babylon 5. This has less fanfiction than Babylon 5 Tech, but less information as a whole. It has some great images, though.
The Down Below Sound Archive. This Page has a sound bite of just about anything you could want from this show. It's a great place to go if you want something along those lines.
Babylon 5: The place to be. This is another great site, loaded with 3D art and the models to make your own! Check it out sometime.
The Music of Babylon 5.. This is another great Babylon 5 Resource. It's webmaster posts various soundtracks from Babylon 5 on a regular basis. Most recently, the site had put up Battle Sequences A-F, the Sampler tracks for the music in Babylon 5: Into the Fire. Take a few minutes and listen to it.
The Shadow Information Office. A great page dedicated to correcting the popular belief that shadows are evil monsters. Rather, it shows that they have a very incolved culture, and exist for the sole purpose of assisting the other races. Check it out.
I hope these links are put to good use. There is a lot of information on the web. most of it bad. This should clear up some of that. Sanfam Out. -
Ignorant nonsense.I'm repeating what other posters have already said, but I think it's worth boiling down the basic issue.
The simple fact is these guys are totally ignorant. They confuse a particular 16-bit implementation of the Unicode "basic plane" with Unicode itself. If they'd done any research at all, they'd know that there are 16 planes, with support for about 1 million characters. Plus some there are "private spaces" so people can create their own extensions of Unicode. There's already the ConScript registry (which supports Shavian and Klingon).
I'm reminded of people who thought computers would never catch on because keypunches were too bulky.
Another ignorant assertion: that 1.5 billion people "speak" Mandarin. Mandarin is the standard dialect of Chinese, but only about 800 million people actually speak it.

Re:Used a pdp-8? I built one!
Wow...
I used a LD-14 as well. And wrote my PDP-8 simulator in software. (This was at the University of Wyoming during '94-'96 or so)
The classes were in undergraduate computer architectures, where the PDP-8 had a special place in one lecturer's heart as the epitome of the Von Neumann computer, with a reasonable (yet small) instruction set. I knew PDP-8 assembly very well, for the first round, and in the advanced class with the LD-14, I got to know the binary op codes pretty well too.
I hated the PDP-8 at the time... but once I took a class that used x86 assembly, I pined for that sweet PDP-8! -

Re:Babylon 5 - A Modern Epic
I am also quite addicted to Babylon 5- most notably for its ability to combine humor and truth to produce something that depicts life in an imperfect universe not so different from our own. People change, there is no such thing as the "good" or the "bad," all of the characters change over time and grow from their experiences to create an overall story. I have always enjoyed this website to get most of the great quotes from the series, I would highly recommend it to those who are in search of the definitive Babylon 5 audio collection.
I can't wait!
