In reference to lower innovation, the visa workers sign Intellectual
Property statements that they lose all right to any good ideas
they come up with . So basically unless they are just feeling
giving they are better off sending encrypted e-mails of company
information back home via anonymous remailers with web-mail .
The funny thing on this is, the dumb local corporations don't
understand how their product was "instantly" reverse engineered in a foreign country with no R&D path , ROFL . Essentially their VAST greed just cut their own throats .
Visa workers are having a impact on innovation, because they
know they have no right to the idea, and can only hope for a
token raise for such work . Some ppl love their work and will
innovate anyways , but most ppl work so they can make a living .
In other words, we have alot of corporations that setup Visas, H1-B and L1 are just two common types .
To avoid the laws permitting only certain numbers new ones have
been made as well, though the L1 visa is unlimited anyways .
I used to work for a few major corporations during and after the
DOT COM boom, and the number of non-citizens is up EXTREMELY in the onshore work force .
When its more beneficial to ship it overseas they take that route .
Which should also should be banned, and yes it is protectionism, and yes other countries have protectionistic laws too .
The corporations decry that they have to hire Visa workers because
they cannot find ppl locally, but the real truth is that a Visa
worker often can be had for ALOT less salary wise, and fear
can be used to scare the visa worker to work HUGE amounts of unpaid overtime .
All the places I worked for during the DOT COM boom used these tactics to line their pockets with more cash .
A professor in California at UC berkley wrote a paper concerning
the Visa fraud, and how some of his citizen students who had good
grades, and good projects could not get jobs, but they students
with Visas with even LOWER performance had no trouble getting jobs .
The professor asked his citizen students if they had declined jobs due to pay and 90%+ said they could not even get an interview.
This is the degree of the situation, and it is discrimination . If you need more proof of the farce, I can provide .

Keep in mind, even after the DOT COM bust that congress passed
to double the # of H1-B's allowed per year into the country .
Basically for the purpose of greed , several 100,000 ppl are
laid off every year "effectively" to bring in cheap labor that
can be pressured with deportation back to a place they were eager
to leave in the first place .
Then citizens have their taxes raised so that we can "bribe" the foreign nations with foreign aid dollars instead of spending the money here .
This environment of fear and exploitation was OK'd by congress
98-1 back in 2000, so don't play partisan politics, both sides
SUCK on the issue because both sides are bought and paid for
with corporate cash .
Soft money from corporations now has more say in the way our government is run than the ppl . The constitution's quote of "For the ppl, by the ppl" is a farce .
The political parties pick their puppets, and the corporations dance their marionettes .
We just get to vote for one puppet or the other, with a facade of concern for the plight of the working man . They should all win oscars ...

H-1b/L-1/immigration a bigger issue
I discussed this in detail in this article. The combination of offshoring, issues with the business cycle and corporate sponsored immigration policy is deadly. Just in case you thought the H-1b issue was over, there are _still_ over 65,000 visas per year being issued(the ones at major universities are exempt from the cap)-about half of which are for IT workers. On top of that there are L-1 visas that are specified in trade agreements like the recent Singapore Chile Free Trade Act that lock the US into substantial numbers of L-1 visas. An industry that is creating no jobs for Americans has no need for these visas.

Return on InvestmentSince jobs requring college degrees are going where college degrees are cheap, college really isn't a good return on investment for residents of countries where college degrees are expensive -- as they most certainly are here.

We have a lot of unemployed techies in the US and UK-a situation created by predatory, corporate sponsored immigration policies like H-1b/L-1(in the US). Prolonged unemployment for folks that have seriously devoted themselves to their career is very disturbing-and many such individuals will adopt radically different belief systems-some of which will be violent.
I wrote about this phenomena in an
article on ecoterrorism I wrote in 2003. The idiotic "leaders" that have created this situation-and are like Bush so arrogant as to taunt folks are to blame for this situation. If we have any degree of economic upturn, I expect to see significantly more reactions of this type.

Young College Graduates Are Struggling. Guess One (Unmentionable) Reason
This spring, thousands of young Americans are graduating from college. They and their tuition-strapped parents regard the degree as a good investment--a ticket to financial independence and a better life. Unfortunately, the labor market no longer seems to share this view.
The real wages of young college graduates (ages 25 to 35) fell in 2004 for the third consecutive year. According to figures complied by the Economic Policy Institute, "Young College Graduates Face Weak Labor Market," Job Watch, May 6, 2005.] Between 2001 and 2004, the real wages of young college graduates dropped from $23.04 per hour to $22.41 per hour.
Employment is finally turning around, but not fast enough to soak up the influx of new college grads. Thus the employment rate of young graduates in 2004 was 85.2 percent, down from 87.4 percent in 2000. It has been 20 years since the fraction of young college graduates with jobs has been as low as it was in 2003 and 2004.
It's trendy to blame the declining economic fortunes of the college-educated on outsourcing or the post-bubble collapse of high-tech. But immigration may be, as usual, the factor that dare not speak its name.
Immigrants represent a rapidly growing share of the college educated workforce--and an even larger fraction of the educated unemployed. (Table 1.)

- The college-educated labor force grew by 10.3 percent

Employment is finally turning around, but not fast enough to soak up the influx of new college grads. Thus the employment rate of young graduates in 2004 was 85.2 percent, down from 87.4 percent in 2000. It has been 20 years since the fraction of young college graduates with jobs has been as low as it was in 2003 and 2004.
It's trendy to blame the declining economic fortunes of the college-educated on outsourcing or the post-bubble collapse of high-tech. But immigration may be, as usual, the factor that dare not speak its name.
Immigrants represent a rapidly growing share of the college educated workforce--and an even larger fraction of the educated unemployed. (Table 1.)
From 2000 to 2003 (the latest year of available data):
- The college-educated labor force grew by 10.3 percent
- The foreign-born college educated labor force grew 24.6 percent
- The U.S.-born college educated labor force grew 8.2 percent
The growth rate of college-educated immigrants was three-times that of college-educated natives.
This occurred despite the post 911 slowdown in student visa processing. This also occurred despite a doubling of the unemployment rate of college-educated foreigners.
Economists call this a "supply-shock" --a situation where excess labor causes wages to fall.
The role of college-educated foreigners in depressing wages of U.S. natives is brought home by Harvard economist (and Cuban immigrant) George Borjas. In his seminal Quarterly Journal of Economics paper [The Labor Demand Curve Is Downward Sloping: ] Borjas concludes that immigration 1980-2000 reduced wages of the average U.S.-born worker by 3.2 percent in 2000.
The reduction varied dramatically among education levels. Native high-school dropouts suffered an 8.9 percent wage reduction. But even college-educated natives suffered an above-average reduction of 4.9 percent.

Economic Rent and Nontradables
Gates struck deal that gave him a natural monopoly. There were other operating systems for the 808x family around and any one of them could have been the predominant one shipped by IBM with its PC. Any one of them would have formed a natural monopoly on that platform and made the owner rich.
Such monopoly profits are called "economic rent" which everyone with any sort of mental faculties about economics, including such staunch advocates of laissez-faire capitalism, as Milton Friedman recognize as the most appropriate source of tax revenue. Since economic rent is subsidized, rather than taxed -- due to the abandonment of the principles of Henry George -- Gates was given state support as he imposed a horrible operating system on the world and became its richest man as a consequence.
Like any welfare queen -- it corrupted his character which wasn't that good to begin with.
So now he, like the rest of the loons running the software industry, think having more fingers writing more code is the way to create good code -- and he's salivating over the virtually endless supply of fingers that can type out so many lines of code that no one will be able to figure out what is going on with the damn OS anymore.
Rent-seeking is a really old game so we should be unsurprized when old world cultures, much more specialized at this sort of thing, smell a nice free-from-risk annuity stream such as the one Gates has and, via the Boeing 747's of the world, and descend upon it like flies laying their eggs in shit.
The result is almost any aspect of that annuity stream will be sucked up and sent overseas (or captured via more robust ethnic nepotism of the older cultures as they rip through the naively individualistic cultures of the new world).
The lesson for Linux is that the government subsidizes rent-seekers so if it wants to benefit from such an annuity stream in such a way that it isn't simply captured by the most sociopathic culture out there -- it must do 2 things:
- It must find a niche in a new hardware/software regime that makes it a de facto standard.
- It must make that de facto standard be tied to nontradable services (and if possible goods but this is less critical for subsistences of the technologists that are from high-cost of family formation societies).
One opportunity to do this is to come up with a different business model for home computing based on the opportunity presented by broadband deployment.
The business model basically involves taking advantage of the fact that most people just want a single unified service where they don't have to worry about their computer/broadband connection so much. The opportunity here is to take something like a wireless mesh solution for Linux and deploy it via a good desktop, easily maintained Linux distro like Ubuntu. Then provide computer/broadband service modeled on an HMO (Information Service Maintanence Organization?) providing some minimal co-pay for service calls. The mesh can suck up bandwidth from virtually any source but the ISMO could provide a feed from the annuity stream.
Given the jobs crunch there are more than enough technologists out there who are under-employed who could use a subsistence, non-tradable service job.

The question remains: are immigration intensive companies a good investment? Every indication is no. Why should we listen to loosers like Schwartz?Sun's stock has been in the crapper for years. I don't see that they've created any jobs for Americans for some time now(sure a few have gotten hired-more have gotten discarded).
I used to work at Sun(search for rburns-that's me). Sun management _could_ have listened to the folks at Sun that were telling them Open Source would be the wave of the future. They chose not to-and instead in violation of their own principles went whining to politicians to get various kinds of corporate welfare-that was supposed to help their company and create jobs for Americans-and didn't.

Unfortunately for Gladwell, the best-known examples of thinking without thinking are racial and gender prejudices. But, then, you've forgotten Rule #2--Readers despise logic and consistency. So Gladwell just assumes that his otherwise beloved "rapid cognition" is 100% wrong whenever it's based on race or gender stereotypes.
(And that's why he makes a $1 million annually and I don't.)
The most intriguing aspect of Gladwell's book is that its hopeless confusion and mind-melting political correctness stem from the author's own racial background. Although mostly white, Gladwell is partly of African descent (his mother was black, Scottish, and Jewish). But he doesn't look noticeably black in most of his pictures.
The origin of Blink, he writes on his website, came when, "on a whim," he let his hair grow long into a loose but large Afro.
As you can see in this picture of Gladwell with his Afro, he wound up with more of a Napoleon Dynamite Mormon 'fro than the genuine kinky kind that ABA basketball players espoused back in the 1970s. Still, it does finally make him look marginally black.
As soon as Gladwell grew his Afro, he claims, he started getting hassled by The Man: highway patrolmen wrote him speeding tickets, airport security gave him the evil eye, and the NYPD questioned him for 20 minutes because they were looking for a rapist with an Afro.

Now, it would be tremendously useful if Gladwell had figured out some general rules of thumb for when to rely on your instantaneous hunches and when not to.
But as far as I can tell, his book reduces to two messages:
- Go with your gut reactions, but only when they are right
- And even when your gut reactions are factually correct, ignore them when they are politically incorrect.
Gladwell does make a genuinely useful point about how when people try to put their ideas into words, they often distort them into meaninglessness or falsehood.

Likewise, Kuni Kikuchi, an 88-year-old in a wheelchair, noted, "It automatically washes my body, so I am quite happy about it. These bubbles are good for the massage effect."
...My question: doesn't the uniqueness of Japanese culture add to the diversity of the world?
And aren't we supposed to celebrate diversity?
Oh, excuse me, that's the wrong kind of diversity. We are supposed to celebrate the right kind of diversity--the kind where each country becomes so diverse in population, its culture so diluted by immigration, that all countries are eventually the same.
How silly of me to forget that the ultimate goal of "diversity" is global uniformity--and monotony.

The big thing I'd add here:
frontiers. If you have a viable frontier, immigration can be much more beneficial. If you have immigration without a frontier, and with a social welfare state, you have a giant contradiction.
The US elites have turned their back on frontiers-and have as you pointed out fallen in love with imperialism and slavery. -

Kerry voters are the stupid ones.Bush won the high school and college graduate vote, i.e. the productive and intelligent majority.
Kerry won the high school dropouts, and the post-graduate vote-- a very high proportion of whom are government workers and teachers with worthless graduate degrees that any moron could get. Useless locusts and parasites, in other words.
Moreover, Kerry is stupider than Bush, as proven by an analysis of their military officer IQ tests.
