Re:Environmental impacts?
haha....
no
Vegetarianism is not associated with longer life, nor increased health.

Re:Good Luck...
If you remove the cattle, you either have to replace them with bison (in which case there is approximately zero net benefit) or you can collapse the ecosystem -- your choice. In either case, you are neither adding to the amount of plants that can be reasonably grown nor mitigating damage to the environment.
Except you don't really say what kind of collapse you are talking about and what the consequences of this would be.
The idea that all cattle farming is necessarily destructive to the environment is ignorant nonsense.
I don't think that anyone is saying that cattle is 'destructive' as much as they are saying it has been proven wasteful time and time again.
Hey, I love burgers too! But I don't pretend to be ignorant of the consequences of eating them. And I do think that there should be some market balancing in effect so if I want my damn burger I pay the real price, a price that accurately accounts for all the resources went into producing it. A burger should be the most expensive thing on the menu.

Re:Can anybody say "Ex Post Facto"
The Ex Post Facto exclusion meaning is thus:
Now, it is legal to fart in the Capitol Building. You fart in there.
They pass a law saying it is illegal to fart in the Capitol Building, pre-dating the bill, so you are arrested. Nuh-huh-huh.
Ex Post Facto means literally "After the fact".
Case in point: Indiana Chicken 'rapist'
He was tried under animal cruelty statues and theft. Note at that time there was no bestiality law in effect, so Indiana could not try him on a law that did not exist at the time of said crime. Now, there is a bestiality law on the books (thanks to the chicken fucker). -
This is being done with pigs already
Pigs get stressed more than most animals when they are housed in high density pens. So there is now a move to selectively breed the "stress" out of pigs. There are also much more advanced methods of slaughter now, such as Temple Grandin's Stairway to Heaven.
The larger problem is actually meat consumption. It takes 12,000 gallons of water to produce a pound of beef... and that's the natural way of growing beef! Imagine doing it in a factory... each pound of beef requires six pounds of corn that could be eaten by us instead. When you look at the numbers for meat, its a depressing story.
Economic and environmental issues dictate that the final solution will be processed foods grown where species can be raised most cheaply. They will probably be adequate as a food source for us, albeit a rather boring one. Not much meat in it. Heavily cooked. Fortified with vitamins and additives to make it worth eating.
If someone else can think up something more interesting and more likely I'm all ears.

Re:If first you don't succeed...
Eat fruit. It's much more satisfying. The Low fat raw vegan diet rocks. Lots of fruit and lots of greens. Small amounts of fats such as nuts and avocados. The Raw Food Diet - the right way Raw Food message board - not one of the fad raw diet ones

But they say it works...
Starlight has already helped foil some terror plots, says Jim Thomas, one of its developers and director of the government's new National Visualization Analytics Center in Richland, Wash. He can't elaborate because the cases are classified, he adds. But "there's no question that the technology we've invented here at the lab has been used to protect our freedoms - and that's pretty cool."
So you see it has been successful they just can't tell us how. Great, I feel much better. Seriously on one level yes some, if not most "plot" (if they are real) will be foiled in the dark. Back right after 9/11 before the Spying on Vegans before Total Information Awareness, Before the Illegal Phone taps, and before Mussoui (remember him the man who was attempting to "level Chicago with a dirty bomb") had his charges downgraded from "Real-Live Terrorist" to "Guy who tried to send money to AlQuaeda but didn't succeed".
Back then we might have bought some of this "Just trust us it helps protect your freedoms" business. Now, now that they are talking about helping not just State Federal and Local but "private-sector security entities" I want it stopped and stopped now. The local rent-a-cop has no right to government data about me. -

I say enema nozzle because he's full of shit. Also, if anyone's heard the extremely well-done satire of Rush Limbaugh, transcribed at http://www.vegsource.com/talk/pub/messages/570.ht

Re:Science gone amuck again
you don't get cancer from genetically engineered food.
How do you know that we don't get cancer from GMOs? It would depend on what that GMO is used for.
google helps to see that GMO is still not considered either good or bad. Here are two links:

to think so betrays a profound lack of education about the slightest bit of what you are talking about
betraying a lack of education? That must be a fancy type of insult to say someone is ignorant by way of knowledge.... we are ALL guilty of that.

Re:MODERATION MADNESS == NOT FUNNY.
Your neighbor sounds like a jerk. (Smoking tobacco doesn't sound very vegan, either; it does not reflect care for himself, and, if he can't care for himself, it must be harder to care for others.) At the very least, he could be consistent and understand that many non-smokers abhor the smell of smoke as much, if not more, than many vegetarians abhor the smell of cooked flesh.
It's very unfortunate that your neighbor does not seem to understand that veganism is essentially about reducing the amount of suffering in the world. His actions seem to indicate that he does not respect your right to not suffer.
I'm sorry that you're having so much trouble with your neighbor. I, too, have had my share of unpleasant neighbors, and it is very draining.
I believe that I portray veganism in the best light when I make it appealing and accessible to other people, in a non-judging way. I'm happier now that I'm vegan, and I hope my behavior towards others reflects that.
If you have the time, you might check out a Vegan Message Board. Hopefully, you'll see that many vegans are very sensitive and caring people, who genuinely want the best for others.
Best of luck with your obnoxious neighbor. -
Re:Prion propagation
> My point regarding herbivoires is that if we observe cattle are built for eating vegetation and we call them herbivoires, it doesn't mean they can't get the same sustinence from meat.
Yes it does mean exactly that. Take a look at Dr T. Campbell's studies. He is a bio-researcher for 40+ years, at Cornell.
> Words like "natural" don't fit into it...
Ugh, what do you think Cows have been eating for the past say, few million years?? They weren't cooking meat on the BBQ, mate.
How do you think Mad Cow Disease spreads? When the dead cows are ground up, and fed to other cows. It's a little hard to get, when they don't eat other animals.
> do you have a better idea as to how to dispose of the animal remains?
We never had a lot of dead animals, since they were for the most part healthy. If you have a lot of dying cows, you got bigger problems to worry about.
We usually buried them, so they could be natually broken down (bio-degradable), and replenish the soil.
Peace

The evolution & "supposed" pre-ancient history of man is a crock.
One of the many proofs that intelligent pre-historic civilizations existed long BEFORE man's civilizations...
1. Progression of "apparent" history of "man" - Hominidae is 3 millions years old
2. Geological Time Frames perspective
3. A machined 3D relief map 120-million years old in a 1-ton stone, with inscriptions. WTF?! -
Re:Is this kosher?Well, it will definitely offend vegans such as myself.
I guess I should tell you, then, that your computer's case already contains animal products.

Vegetarianism
I am so turned off when I think of steak and hamburgers now, that I can barely order and wolf down a Big Mac or prime rib any more.
Then why don't you become a vegetarian? It's easier than you think and it gets easier every day. And vegetarians do eat more than just salads. You can find veggie-friendly food at practically any restaurant. VegSource.com is a good resource for beginning vegetarians. -
Re:Link re. Dow's "SiLK".
This is an artificial polymer with a low dielectric constant. Not the silk used for cloth.
Thank goodness, a non-vegan processor would set a very bad precedent. Imagine if leather was standard for mouse pads, yuck! (Silk isn't vegan because it's worms boiled alive.)
