Re:Umm...
Most certainly not. The NeoGeo never saw a price cut and died a horrible death. The Wii on the other hand started at a price people were comfortable with (I think $250 is going to be this generation's $200 mark - $300 is a little high and will probably be next generation) and has sold phenomenally.
The XBOX360 released at what was roughly equivalent to the PS2 and XBOX release points (with inflation, yada yada). All of those systems showed very similar sales in the first year and then dropped in price after hype died down and early adopters all owned one. The PS3, while starting out comparable to the 360, is distinctly losing momentum at this point. It is sitting in a position of having numerous "hardcore" gamers (myself included) who really honestly want one but can't afford it - as has been pointed out, it's the affordability, not the bang-for-the-buck, that's holding people back.

Re:Sun will shine tomorrow.
The competition needs to do something to beat Nintendo. If you look at the charts, you'll see that Nintendo has sold more consoles in 6 months than Xbox360 sold in it's first year as the lone player. Also, it looks like they will surpass Xbox360 within 6 more months. And the PS3 looks like a no show. Looks to me like the tables have completely turned this generation.

Re:Success?http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&console
= SNES&publisher=&sort=TotalThat link shows all of the 1+ million sellers on the SNES. The top 10 has 8 Nintendo games and 2 Capcom games (Street Fighter 2 and Street Fighter 2 Turbo). #11-15 adds another 3 Nintendo games and Final Fantasy VI and Dragon Quest VI. #16-20 adds 2 Nintendo games, Final Fantasy V and Dragon Quest V and Chrono Trigger.
So you weren't far off... Nintendo games and Square/Enix are right behind.

Re:Just like a used car
Nintendo was number 3, and pretty far behind Sony according to this chart . That didn't stop them from making a pretty heavy profit off their sales, and having a lot of fans around the world. It also didn't stop them from selling tons of Wii's in the first six month (chart) when it became apparent that their competitors just weren't getting it.

Re:Wii needs strong third party games too
1. Super Paper Mario has sold over a million copies as has Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Red Steel. (source) Two of those are third party titles.
2. Nintendo is perfectly willing to share the spotlight. It's the third parties that bet on the PS3 and XBox. Up until recently they've been decrying the Wii as "two gamecubes duct taped together" or "gamecube 1.5". They kind of screwed themselves over.
3. One Word: NiGHTS
4. Three Words: Guitar Hero III
5. 26 Words: Geometry Wars: Galaxies, LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition, Tomb Raider: Anniversary :-P -

Parent is nonsense
The Wii is selling on a PS2 track. The PS3 is about 1.5 million behind.
http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2®1 =America&cons2=PS3®2=America&cons3=Wii®3=Ame rica&align=1
Admittedly it's quite hard to tell from this plot, but it shows PS2 and Wii are similar, and Wii is about 1.5 Million ahead of PS3 in North America.
A lot of people have replied to this assuming the parent was correct, but it aint.
(Umm, unless the claim is that PS3 is only 100,000 per week ahead, but that is pretty catastrophic if it's true.) -
Halo got pwned by puppies...
Halo 1 for the Xbox ranks 25th for lifetime sales in the US since with 4.91million units sold
Halo 2 for the Xbox ranks 16th with 6.11million units sold
Metroid Prime ranks 147th with 1.92 units sold
http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=&console= &publisher=&sort=America
Great example, wrong game, wrong totals. Check VGChartz again.
Halo 1 = Sales of 6.43 million units worldwide.
Halo 2 = Sales of 7.89 million units worldwide.
Nintendogs = Sales of 13.58 million units worldwide.
Yes, Nintendogs is less than 1 million units away from outselling both games combined. -
Re:Halo's popularity
I love how the whole context of the comment has been lost. This chain of comments gives the perfect example.
First off, it's cute, using the statistics only for America. How about we re-run those numbers on a global market? Custom-designing your game to appeal much more to a narrower demographic is always going to give you more spectacular results. Try this one instead*:
http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php
Note how the Halos now have their asses kicked. Sure, they're still big sellers... but note how *most* of the games coming before Halo 2 are Miyamoto games. (this is where I'm getting back to the point)
What Miyamoto's saying is that by concentrating on making really awesome, original games he keeps pumping out great games. Sure, he has the skill to make Yet Another Game, but so does every other game developer out there with two and a half brain cells to rub together. The top of the line pop studios (id, Bungie, etc.) do have better success rates, but they still have to compete with other plain-jane studios. He's saying that he's not aiming for the cheeseburger market. Sure, it provides a big hit or two... but note how most of the big hits are those revolutionary games. Even on a strictly numerical game, he's winning hands-down. Why don't more studios do that? They can't or they won't. He never actually insulted Halo-- only that Bungie was pursuing a saturated market.
(*Also, how did Metroid Prime only ship 120K units in Japan? That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. How accurate are these numbers?) -

Keep in mind this is all platforms for all time, competing against greats like Mario Bros on the NES, Tetris on the Gameboy, The Sims on the PC, and Grand Theft Auto on the PS2. Ranking 16 and 25th for all time is no small feat. -
I'm surprised..
I'm surprised a suit would say that comparison is 'difficult', when sales figures are readily available. Maybe what's difficult is having to explain them to billg?
-
Re:Other info
And that Wii software outsells PS3 software at over 25 to 1 (31 to 1 this week).
-
Re:PS3 F-ed up, and 360 is too hardcore
I wouldn't say the PS3 is "slaughtering" the xbox in japan. while it's sold a lot more units, the PS3 is actually really struggling, and I wouldn't be surprised to see it. Interestingly enough, the PS3 only just overtook the X360 in terms of software sales.
When you consider that the Wii is outselling the PS3 at a generally higher ration than the PS3 is outselling the X360 (which is a dismal failure in Japan) then it looks bad.
Basically, everything rests on the shoulders of Final Fantasy XIII. If Square-Enix doesn't deliver, I think Japan is lost for Sony. -
Re:They're outselling them?
http://www.vgchartz.com/?b=6
360 = 9.68 million
Wii = 6.54 million
PS3 = 3.16 million -
Re:Xbox 360 is a flop
My statistics differ from your statistics.
See now this is why statistics suck. Everybody can fudge statistics and nobody has the real figures. Even your sources aren't valid for things like this.
But lets take one of your sources and apply a little bit of logic. From here http://www.vgchartz.com/ngwars.php we get that indeed the Wii has sold over 6 million consoles... but if we look closer we see that compared to the other consoles a greater amount(2.12 million it says) were sold to those in japan. Given that the other consoles don't have nearly that many sold in Japan we can see a great imbalance in the rise of sales in different locales.
Let me ask you a simple question... Do you think that Japan has enough people to say that this rise was anything more than temporary? And since close to half of the total sales so far have come from Japan this could be what we see as a greater sales presence. Yay for statistics.
Again even if Microsoft is fluffing the statistics, they aren't doing that bad. -
Re:Xbox 360 is a flop
My statistics differ from your statistics.
The Wii has sold more than 6 million, and Microsoft has been stuffing the retail channel with 360s to inflate "sales" (shipped) numbers to meet projections.
Wikipedia is not a valid source for things like this.
