Downside of using clouds
As an undergrad years back, we considered putting together a system like this. We were planning to use an obscure game console, the Vectrex (image; emulator ) and projecting on the clouds above Los Angeles.
There are two problems with this approach. First, clouds aren't solid so higher altitude clouds are preferable and higher powered lasers necessary. Secondly, the FAA doesn't like lasers lighting up their airspace and possibly interfering with pilot's vision. The first issue didn't bother us, but lasers have a disadvantage that you can easily track them back to their source.

DavesClassics and PayPal
I used to frequently visit an emulation site called Dave's Classics (www.davesclassics.com). I had to be very careful typing in the address because if I typed:
- www.daveclassics.com --> Porn site.
- www.davesclassic.com --> Porn site.
DavesClassics is now known as VintageGaming.com.
I remembered someone on Slashdot mentioning that PayPal had a problem with a site typosquatting on paypaI.com and grabbing people's credit card numbers. (The lowercase 'l' and uppercase 'I' are almost indistinguishable in some fonts...)

Re:No solution, period
In theory, you could take your cheating all the way to a massively complicated AI you plug in between the machine the game is running on, and the keyboard, mouse and monitor you see.
Unfortunately, such a massively complicated AI has already been created. The world hasn't been the same since. -
Re:Weird that this is *new* on SlashdotThey covered MAME for the first time ages ago. You could al least have done a search in the archives
:-)
- But... I agree that
/. could inform people more about MAME since it gets better with every release. But then... there are excellent sites like http://www.retrogames.com or http://www.vintagegaming.com already doing that - Hint: Maybe
/. readers could ask Nicola Salmoria (or someone else from the MAME team) some questions ? ;-) - I hope they get Afterburner working, not because it's such a great game without the hydraulics, but it would _really_ be a technical achievement don't you think?

I don't like to moan, but...
(okay, so I do like to moan) Waaaaaaaah! I submitted this, like, about 6 weeks ago when I saw it on Vintage Gaming and nobody took any notice. Grumble mutter grr etc. Still, Mr. Taco took my idea for the Debian non-free poll so there we go

Re:Yeah,... and links!No it isn't. I mean the first real good pinball games were the Dreams/Fantasies/Illusions series. I played them to DEATH.
Since then there have been some good pinball games coming out, and recently there have been a few more pinball game releases. Okay, the computer is hardly like the real thing, but it's still fun, and they ARE still making them. I saw one just the other day called "Lula Flipper" or something.
If you're interested in some games, check out here. Admittedly they're all Windows and DOS games, but if you have the chance it could be fun.
Slashdot is populated by quite a few jackasses.

Re:Ultracade
The reason all the games are from Capcom is because Capcom is the only company so far to release their older video games into the public domain. All the other companies (including those who make the classic games you mentioned) haven't released their games even though they are fifteen or so years old and obviously are no longer generating revenue. If you want to play the classic games you mentioned, Ultracade is not what you want anyway, check out MAME at Vintage Gaming or Arcade At Home.

Yup, the original Mac looks a lot like a Vectrex.
You can see a picture of a typical Vectrex unit here...

have to disagreenot that I'm a friend of EGM anymore (it's totally gone to crap after Steve, Ed, Martin and Sushi left. RIP the original Review Crew), but I do have to disagree with you. If you would recall a recent issue of EGM where they reviewed Superman. The main editor of the mag (john Davidson or something), gave it a 0.5 out of 10... Stating that it should get at least half a point for just booting up. The kicker is, the magazine had been hawking it up for months. it was hysterical. They also gave low points to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver because of the fact that it was unfinished... and they had a huge feature on it a few issues back. Luckily, there are still things at EGM that won't change, such as:
THQ is a half-assed outfit.
Acclaim games will always suck.
Movie-Based Games will always suck (except Goldeneye).
Games based on licenses (spawn, McKids, etc) will suck worse than a broken hoover.I do have to agree with you on the "Linux VS. NT" test, as they borked it all up. Although I really don't think they were "paid" by micro$haft, they most likely fixed the outcome to stay in microsoft's favor. Considering all the "alternative OS" crap they've been mentioning, Microsoft's gotta be pretty peeved at their little llamas.
For official Magazines, here's my picks:
PC: Maximum PC. they like linux, and are pretty straight-up. They even interviewed Linus Torvalds in their last issue of Boot (when they were still called that).
Linux: either Linux Magazine or Maximum Linux.
PC Gaming: PC Accelerator. good, and funny.
Console Gaming: GameFan. They're also keen on emulation (as seen by www.vintagegaming.com)DavesClassics is dead. Long live Zophar.net
