Re:Not fair to call it Google fiber
Google has been buying up existing "dark fiber" networks since 2005. They've made little secret of it.

Re:They didn't... because Telecomm Cos are Nervous
Not a conspiracy... But heavily marketing the non-phone handhelds (virtually identical technology to the phones) would potentially be perceived as "biting the hand" that has fed Apple billions. @Jhon, are you suggesting the telecomm industry isn't writing about the threats to growth in hand-held phone service by VOIP and wifi in their own stock prospectus? Was CEA catering to paranoids in establishing the Emerging Markets series on this topic at CES? Here's an article from 2007, does it sound crazy? http://www.voip-news.com/articles/voip-blog/coming-soon-wifi-voip-52019/ By the way, I get the same sneers when I tell people about the size of the PC-monitor-TV-combo market, I get sent to the mirror a lot when talking about 3 billion consumers in the good enough market.

Re:Skype incoming call...
Skype quality is extremely dependent on hardware and room acoustics. If we can compress, stream, and decode MP3s in real time, the technology is likely not the problem. Instead, I think people simply are unwilling to pay real money for a simple microphone. However, a lot of nicer webcams seem to come with very nice Mics.
Except we can buffer the MP3 stream to smooth out latency, jitter, packets arriving out of order, and retransmit dropped packets if need be. You can't do that with Voice over IP, as adding more than about 1/2-second.2 seconds latency is very noticeable.

Re:What is Google's interest? Data Tracking?
Google is already into fiber having bought out a lot of dark fiber years ago. At the time, Google said it was help reduce costs by using their own pipes rather pay a network like AT&T to connect their own data centers. Now the real question is why are they going into providing consumers fiber access.

Fees to Pay for Costs of E911 and Wiretaps?
VoIP is subject to regulation. Others have already mentioned E911. But there is also the issue of FBI wiretap access to VoIP phone calls. The VoIP Cos are gonna pass the costs of these "services" on to consumers just like Ma Bell and its kiddies have done since day one.
