Re:Brain Drain
They only fired West and Zampella (the rest quit on their own volition)
What have Volition got to do with it?

Re:I love space sims.
Yup. Volition went under. Uh huh.

They're still around: http://www.volition-inc.com/. Among their credits is the rather popular Red Faction, and they're about to release a licensed game of The Punisher (yeah, ugh), and after that are working on Red Faction II.
Freespace 2 ... what a game. You really felt like an ant fighting it out amidst these colossal cap ships and their beams. But at the end, when I ran back in a desperate but successful attempt to save a couple ships in the convoy, only to find myself too late to get through the gate in time, screaming "come on, come on!!!" as I'm pushing the burner, diverting all shields to the engines ... I realize I won't make it. So I turned the engines off and watched the end in silence, and realized how well and truly outclassed the TVA is, thankful that humanity got away just in time to survive to fight another day. It leaves me aching for a sequel to wrap up the storyline, but it doesn't look like Volition is all that interested. -
Just ordered mine
And I resent the hell out of the fact that interplay is selling me back my favorate game, while refusing to make the follow up, Freespace 3. Oh, sure there is a petition but this is interplay were talking about here, they canceled fallout 3 and disbanded Black Isle which was still producing incredible games. Volition wants to make FS3 but Interplay holds the copyright. So yeah, I purchaced this, but I gave them a one out of ten on there feedback from, because Interplay has done some absolutly stupid, dumbass stuff over the past 5 years.

Re:Wing Commander
You should try the Freespace series of games. They're getting a little long in the tooth these days, but they work perfectly well under Win2K and XP. As well, they really take up the slack where Wing Commander III dropped the ball -- screw the FMV, Mark Hamill, 5 minutes of gameplay for 30 minutes of movie crap. The Freespace series has a decent story (not groundbreaking, but still good for what it is) but more importantly great action and lots of it. You won't spend your gaming time watching poorly acted or rendered video sequences. You'll spend it in the cockpit of your fighter, blowing away aliens and fighting massive capital ships.
Of course, the Freespace games are a couple years old now, and it'll probably be pretty difficult to find them in stores. Your best bet is to hit EBay and see what you can find.

Where are the real physics engines?
Physics specalized processors? Can anyone show some nice linkage for them? That sounds like the next step for games today complete and utterly lifelike physics engines instead of scripted crap. Would make mapping much easier as well, imho. I know of geomod tech from the people that did red faction and freespace but what else is out there up to and including programs or languages for astrophysics and geomorphology simulations?

Summoner
Check out Summoner at Volition. Looks really good, and I have high expectations--these are, of course, the people who did Descent and Freespace.
