Re:Here's a listI'm not the dude from the post, but thanks so much for this link.
Someone had suggested TicketSmith to a VP here and had asked me to look into it. The first thing I noticed was how many different pieces would have to be installed and maintained to get it running. Now I'll have an alternative to offer.

Ticketsmith
I've used Ticketsmith for a few years now. Threaded replies, assign tickets to staff members, web based, auto-replies to the client.
Does everything you need, and nothing you don't. -
Re:Not to be stupid
The machine that you want a shell on, might be much better connected than your home machine. Why do you think that hosting companies (web hosting, email hosting, virtual-colocating, etc) still exist? There's a good reason Rob doesn't run Slashdot on a PC in his laundry room.

MordernBill and UbersmithWell, depending on if you want to store the credit card info on your servers or if you want to store it on someone elses servers.
If you want to store the info on your own servers the best solution for you would probably be ModernBill. It offers an integrated signup process and user management. It can also automatically talk to payment gateways such as AuthorizeNet. Highly reccomended by many. Check out http://www.modernbill.com.
If you want to keep your customer info offsite you can check out Ubersmith, which is provided by voxel.net. This is also very good and I know many people who use it. The only problem here is price. It's rather expensive to go this way, but if you can afford it it's probably the best way to go.
Hope those all help.

Avi Freedman on board
I was somewhat skeptical, but Avi Freedman is listed as an advisor, assuming that this is true, I think that this could be extremely interesting.

Re:who is the best in hosting?Voxel.net is the best hosting provider you can have. I currently have about 10 domains with them. If I have a request I get an answer with 12 hours. They are fast and they run linux.
Check out http://hosting.voxel.net for details. If you sign up then tell them I sent you

It isn't professional to have a different e-mail!!Great article. I don't know about "don't use the same e-mail address as your domain". It looks extremly amaturish if you have a www.mycompany.com but then you use mycompany@yahoo.com as an e-mail. Nobody is going to take you seriously.
If anybody is looking for a great hosting company look into Voxel.net . I don't work for them but I do have an host with them. Their support is amazing!! I asked them about setting up a domain and told them the horror stories we all hear from CIHost. The next thing I know is I have one of their sales guys calling me because they thought my domain crashed (with CIHost) and I needed to be up ASAP. All their systems are Linux and have PHP3, MySql, Java, Java Servlets, and Perl. Also whenever I do a top on their system they always have 99% free. They don't overload boxes with too many domains. This makes them a bit pricer but for the service and support(they get back to usually in less than four hours) it's worth it. They also claim to be on one of the internet backbones so they are fast as hell. If you have any question feel free to e-mail me.

The only two decent hosts
I've tried at least two dozen hosts for my 60 odd sites. Now I've got all of them with just two hosts. Both do an excellent job.
They are:
1. Voxel.net:10/10, but a *little bit* pricey
2. Pair:9.5/10, and very reasonable.
It's a real tossup between the two. But this is a good place to start. -
alternative providers
I know SourceForge is good for the OSS projects. But does anyone have any recommendations for a good OSS orientated commercial provider? I checked out Voxel Dot Net and they look pretty sweet. Anyone have any comments?

Re:So what's a good service?Id also recommend voxel i have 3 domains hosted with them and am very happy. plus they are giving back a decent percentage of their profits back to the fsf community and i think they offer free hosting for gpl'ed projects
as for domain registration, the cheapest ive seen is an australian company called totalnic which charges 35 per domain for 2 years. theres a bunch of core resellers listing on the corenic webpage.
hope some of this linkage helps

recommendations
I know minivend is a fairly robust engine for the backend side of things. Slap MySQL and Apache on there too and you start to get close to a complete package that is both free and robust. As far as integrators of various technologies... there aren't many... I know the people at Voxel Dot Net are awesome. (btw, good overall open source company). There's got to be others out there too.. good opportunity for someone who can fly with it.

Too bad & open offer
That's really too bad about Linuxbox.com, i don't know much about them other than a brief visit to their site a few months ago, but bad clients are a thorn in the side of many a hosting company, especially when their margins were as thin as they were.
We'd like to make an open offer to any Linux/OSS related site : Free, obligation-free, hosting. For more information, please check out our web site at voxel.net.
