Re:Who cares?
The US only gives aid to countries who are in extreme need anyway like Haiti.
Yes, it's nice to know that the US ONLY gives aid to countries in extreme need.
It's also nice to know that you probably represent the average US citizen, ie. full of shit. ABS used to mean something here in Canada before "anti-lock braking system" was invented... we're used to your type.

Re:Another Technological Advance From Israel
Wrong again, HateBreeder. Oh how ironic it is that that is your choosen nick..
The indirect costs in goodwill the Israeli-American special relationship is causing American companies is orders of magnitudes bigger than the direct aid cost which is 5 billions/year. Companies have a much harder time penetrating Arab markets thanks to the US pro-Israeli stance. Coca-Cola for example was boycotted in Middle East. The whole oil embargo which caused the US economic recession in the late 70's was a direct result of the aid to Israel. From a purely economic viewpoint, the aid has been a huge freaking burden with no return whatsoever. Not even gratefulness.
Oh, and "the Jews" do tick, coerce and bribe politicians to keep giving money.

Re:Neocons rejection of 'no first use' doctrine..
I recall that the Bush/Reagan administration was fingered for allegedly paying Iran to hold onto the hostages until after the US election, but do not recall
;) the specifics. I don't know that you can pin that on Big Bush, but it certainly was part of the administration he was in. Given that Reagan's brain died years before the rest of his body, it would not be surprising that he was part of the decision. -
Re:Yes/No/MaybeA troll named Chas (5144) wrote:
The US is already investing trillions in foreign aid. Why the fuck should we be required to pay more?
Because what the US considers "foreign aid" includes such things as weapons to Israel? A whooping 12.5% (or up to 30% if including loan guarantees) of all US "foreign aid" goes to Israel.
And your "investing" here is a key word.
The money that doesn't go to friendly countries like Israel, is more often than not tied in with a contingency that the money being spent to purchase goods and services from the US, thus bringing the money back? Around 80% (!) of all US "foreign aid" in reality goes to US companies.
Finally, the US "foreign aid" figures include funds that were never paid, just promised. What often happens is that the next congress overturns the spending, but it's still counted.
Remember the Tsunami 1 1/2 years ago? And how the US first became a laughing stock by promising less aid than 3rd world countries gave? And then promised a calculated 1.5 times as much as any other country? Well, guess what? The US promised, but never paid up.
And look at the numbers. The UN target for foreign aid is 0.7% of the GNP.
The US spends less than 0.17% (of which, as mentioned before, about 80% goes back into US pockets), while much poorer countries like Portugal at least manages 0.65%, and many other industrial nations exceed 0.7% by quite a margin, including Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Pro capita, the US spends less on foreign aid than any other industrialised country, and that's before considering the kickback system and foreign aid going to weapons for rich countries.
Finally, let's not forget that the US is a big recipient of foreign aid. After hurricane Katrina, for example, the US received $126 million in foreign aid, most of which went straight to the treasury, and never was spent on what the givers intended.
You can not with a straight face say that US citizens spend a lot on foreign aid, nor that the little they spend reach the intended target.

Re:Vote!
You are so naive. Don't call Al Qaeda? Sooo...drop all my suppliers for my business that are based anywhere outside the country, or maybe even inside the country. How the heck am I supposed to know that the guy selling me left handed widgets is or is not under investigation? And if the guy I ordered flowers from for my mom might also be muslim. Maybe I ate at a middle eastern restaurant and it shows up on my credit card...
Or just suck it up and accept that anything I do or say, domestic and foreign, will be monitored and recorded for later correlation and data mining. And just hope that no Israeli company goes into competition with me.

Re:Appeasement...
So Israel following international law and being bribed to do so with 500 billion dollars (in my plan) is appeasement, but even though Iran is NOT in violation of any actual international laws it ought to be bombed? Are you neo-cons supporters ever embarrassed by how BLATANTLY biased your arguments are?
Clue # 2 Bush claimed to be enforcing international law on behalf of a U.N. that said please DON'T when Bush went to war against Iraq against the wished of the international community. Then it turned out his casus belli WMDs was phony and what's more former weapons inspectors like Republican Scott Ritter knew it was a phony casus belli from day # 1. Total cost 30,000+ innocent Iraqi lives, 2500+ American soldiers lives, and 400 billion dollars.
Don't you neo-con supporters even feel the littlest bit ashamed when you pretend to be outraged that Iran is an international outlaw yet give Israel a pass for 60+ violations of U.N. resolutions. Does consistency mean NOTHING to you. Ah that's right it does mean nothing for you are the people who disparaged the reality based community. Neo-con policies have failed in a disastrous way, time to step aside in disgrace and let someone else lead us who has basic competence that clearly Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Bolton, Wolfowitz, Pearle, and other neo-cons clearly lack. While I am no Dem supporter Lie-berman getting his ass kicked in Connecticut was a good start. Time to clean house of all the AIPAC tit suckers (tens of millions of dollars and counting now) from Hilary to Georgie from BOTH parties. Not to mention the 84 BILLION we have paid out. 500 billion to cut off Israel and get the U.S. out danger from Muslim hated would be a small price to pay indeed if our first priority was clears throat AMERICA, and not Israel's well being. Neo-cons ASSUME that AMERICAN and Israelis self interest converge, where as I assure you they do not and the Muslim people could be our friends if we treated them justly and didn't act like Israel's 2nd state.

Re:Economic PoliciesNo country ever got rich off handouts.
I beg to differ.

Are you an idiot?
Hello superyooser.
It's not the Israelies who blow themselves up in buses and kill many innocent children. ...but it is the Israelis who form death squads, torture palestinians and kills civilians in refugee camps.
How do you suggest palestinians should defend themselves? Their land is occupied. They have no army or military capacity that is even a fraction of Israel's. Bear in mind that killing yourself is not an easy choice.
It's not the Israelies who contribute to charities to fund terror groups.
Are you crazy? That would be the United States that is pouring in billions in military aid to Israel.
It's not the Israelies who have a dictatorial government.
The palestinian people have been denied a government for a long time. How do you expect palestinians to organize when Israel denies them that right?
It's not the Israelies who have vowed to wipe their neighbor from the face of the earth.
But the Israelis certainly are in the lead:
________________Israelis____Palestinians
Children Killed _____106____________494
Civilians Killed_____632__________2,317
Assassinations _______1____________297
Bystanders killed
in the course
of Assassination____________________145
It's not the Israelies who are teaching both in schools and mosques their children to hate.
According to a 1977 UNESCO report, Israeli authorities systematically doctored the textbooks on history, geography, and literature used by Palestinian children to eliminate references to Palestine.
So, it should be no surpise that Israelies are at WAR.
It should be no surprise Palestinians are pissed when their country is invaded and occupied! -
(Way) OT Re:I told you so.
IBM helped slaughter Jews
The most credible source at that story was the only remaining IBM guy that worked at the office in question, who said that all he knew was that they were helping the government trains run. There was much huffing and puffing and "that gives us the final proof", but never was the final proof mentioned, just a lot of the context and possibility. It looks to me like some people are claiming that there is new evidence linking IBM to direct involvement, but no one in that story seemed to be able to describe what that evdence was, but rather to simply assert that it now existed.
If you want to know who else helped slaughter Jews, don't forget to look at
the (Zionist) Jews themselves.
From that link:
If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, but only half of them by transporting them to Palestine, I would choose the second - because we face not only the reckoning of those children, but the historical reckoning of the Jewish people.
Scary. And if you like conspiracy theory, see:
this author's story

Re:violently overthrow the Constitution?
Except that you leave out that the Palestinians spent the last 50 years trying to destroy Israel, so Israel has some reason to keep the Palestinians under control. Not to mention that the Israelis haven't yet tried to actually wipe out the Palestinians, though I can see the day coming when they might try it, or at least to expel them all into Jordan and Egypt.
Many Palestinians have spent the last 50 years trying to simply survive underneath an Israeli government that started its existence by dispossesing many of the non-Jewish peoples and using terrorist tactics. Not to mention that the state was, to some extent, established by fiat of the dominant (and still very colonial) world powers of the time.
This doesn't mean the suicide bombers are right, or that the very real crimes of the Israelis make the crimes of the Palestinian people any less real. What it does mean is that the Israeli State is just as much to blame for the situation there as any Arab or Palestinian organization. This biography provides some interesting insights.
And while he may not be striclty correct, I don't blame the poster for thinking the US is doing the wrong thing in Columbia. We have a fairly long history of doing the wrong thing, sometimes with good intentions, sometimes without. It's only too bad that in many cases, the opposition is equally corrupt, and ceasing US intervention wouldn't be enough to bring peace to the world.
Bottom line: the world is a complicated place, the good guys aren't easy to tell from the bad guys, and often, people and nations are a mix of both. -
Israel is trying to hack theseThis report claims that Israel is trying to hack around range restrictions in the control software. That begs the question, what is the range of one of these? I suspect it may reach quite a ways.
Pentagon sources said Israel wants this technology for a variety of reasons, virtually all of which are harmful to U.S. interests. The Nautilus laser was given to Israel to protect against Katyusha rockets, which are short-range, relatively crude weapons. The laser system?s source code, not made available to the Israelis as part of the original agreement, contains mission-limiting restrictions on the laser?s range and strength

I'll explain
Foreigner's can be held with secret evidence:
Washington Report
----------------
Burning books & destroying CD's.
Libraries destroying information
----------------
The FBI can tap your communications without a warrant(carnivore). See the ATA for other violations of the constitution.
----------------
Dimitri? Held for how long for allowing Russians to exercise their fair use rights. Suppose Iran would arrest an american for creating a porn-program and posting it on the Internet (forcing their laws on you). Would you be angry?
----------------
DMCA. Take away your fair use rights, who wants to view DVD's on linux anyway? Copy media for your own use, thou shall not. 'Quoting' something (for a review or such), not allowed. Viewing an e-book in a non-approved browser: no, the traditional reverse engineering for interoperability is forbidden. Who needs competition anyway?
----------------
Mandatory censorship in libraries. Who needs freedom of speech? A good thing your daughter can't find info on birth control, the US would risk losing it's nr. 1 position in teenage pregnancies.
----------------
Randal Schwartz? A security advisor at Intel who forgot to inform his boss of running a password-auditing program. Even without hostile intent he was convicted. The same law can get you 15 years in Oregon if you run Napster on your computer or change the color of your screen without informing your boss (the judge gave that last example, I didn't make it up). They don't have to tell you it's wrong in advance.
Oregon vs our favorite Perl programmer

'But, but...other countries are far worse'
That's what I expect someone to say now. -
Zimmerman Telegram was WWIThe Zimmerman Telegram was WWI, sent in 1917.
The Enigma Machine wasn't developed until the '30s.
Interesting OT side note concerning the Zimmerman Telegram, some feel that it is tied into the historical British support for a Jewish homeland, leading to the formation of Israel at the expense of the Palestinians. Valid or not, I don't know, but this is definately stuff I wasn't taught in school.

Re:What about Zionist fanatics?
Israel has attacked Americans before (on purpose). Witness the attack on Americans during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, on the USS Liberty: http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/04/23/liberty.attack/
and the account of a former Mossad agent, that Israel was the one that actually bombed the West Berlin nightclub that killed American servicemen -leading to the bombing of Ghaddafi: http://www.washington-report.org/backissues/0495/9 504058.htm
Read the books by Viktor Ostrovsky, former Mossad agent: (1) By Way Of Deception (2) The Other Side Of Deception
Granted, that is an account by a former agent, which can not (or will probably ever be) substantiated, but it will be quite eye-opening to Slashdot readers and the world in general. Israel even tried to ban the book's publication.
The one related to the your current president's father should be interesting to everyone. -
Re:Freedom for Dmitry!
Amazingly, astonishingly, this is not true. It is one of the wonders of human history, and perhaps more than a little accidental, but the United States (in theory) recognizes the freedoms of humanity regardless of nationality.
Amazingly, astonishingly, your statement is not true.
Case in point: 100s of illegal aliens are in jail in the US beyond their jail time (for the crimes they committed) because their own governments won't take them back. (Of course, no government wants to take in hardened graduates of the US penal system)
Case in point: an American citizen can not be convicted based on secret evidence. But non-citizens can and have been convicted.
