    Webconverger sounds like exactly what you are looking for. An OS the boots straight into the browser. It has the added benefit of the option of either a hard drive install or a live CD, meaning that nothing would remain on the system after a reboot.

    Webconverger is a locked down Debian, that only allows access to a Web browser. Conceivably the Java testing app could be deployed through the browser via their Java browser plugin.

    By default Webconverger does not ship with Java, though you can order a customised version from http://webconverger.com/buy with it included.

    Back in the day, BeOS booted in 6 seconds to a fully usable desktop (6 seconds after the POST). I don't think that is what you are looking for though, and I don't know how far the Free clone, Haiku, has come.

    More realistically, there is this interesting Linux distribution, Webconverger:

    I've used it for a few web-only systems. Boots up fast enough. Use it as a starting point to tweak. Basically, firefox becomes your operating system and UI. Neat idea.
