Dude, the TRS-80 (Model I) a/k/a Trash 80, was an extremely primitive Z80-based monochrome alphanumeric/block graphics display computer which had 4K ROM and 4K RAM (or 16K for the enhanced model) when it first came out in 1977. This thing had a fairly barebones operating system, basically one step up from a KIM-I. Radio Shack outlets usually had one CPU on display, and would let kids muck around with them for hours, which is how many old geezers got their first taste of computing. Sometimes they'd have another CPU in the window which was running "Dancing Demon," a stick figure that would jerk around in rhythm with some beeps and bops. (At least, I think it had sound, can't remember, the old brain is getting rusty.) If you were to compare it to a CBM machine, your best bet would be the CBM 2001/B.

OTOH, the Tandy TRS-80 Color Computer 1(aka CoCo) came out in 1980, had a kewl 6809 microprocessor and was capable, after expansion, of up to 64K. It could pump out color graphics, sound, and had loads of great games. Although it also was originally available with 4K RAM, at least it had a pretty capacious 8K ROM. Furthermore, it had an RF modulator and could therefore be used on any TV set. It was roughly analogous to the Vic20. The later CoCo3 was more like the C-64, and was arguably the last and best of the early PEEK/POKE-style BASIC-programmable home computers. (The damn thing ran OS-9!) Unfortunately for Radio Shack, the CoCos remained also-rans, squeezed in between Commodore's low-priced assault and the Apple II's high-margin cool cachet.

Windows and menus are all very pretty, but they don't come anywhere near the lean functionality of Linux.

Can we get a little focus here? We're talking network servers, not GUIs. Besides, nobody would argue that MS is the leader in GUI design!

I guess my unstated point was specifically that it is possible to have a decently running hyper-complex, kludgy, inefficient, insecure system - if you happen to know what you're doing with it.

That's like saying, "You can build a skyscraper out of toothpicks, if you're very good with toothpicks." In the real world, Murphy's Law applies, and you minimize your chances to screw up or suffer the consequences.

Never said that. I said there are people who think it's the industry standard.

To part, I'd like to pose the controversial question; If it was Dell.com that went down, and not Microsoft (bear in mind, same OS) would it have received as much attention on Slashdot?

Please address my arguments on their own merits. I am very, very, very, very tired of listening to the "you're hypocritical so you're wrong" argument. Even if the accusation is true (and I don't believe it is in this case) it's merely an ad hominem attack, without any bearing on any argument.

I'm particularly impatient this week, 'cause I just finished reading The Turner Diaries, a book that takes this argument to the ultimate extreme.

I run a website called Omphalos - its pretty small, its taken a lot of work to develop, and I don't make a dime off of it, so I am not upset at lost revenue or anything, but I have had my site content ripped off completely by some other individual in the past, and despite repeated attempts to get the situation resolved (which I handled badly at the start I admit) and despite chasing the guy across multiple webhosts I have still failed to get my stolen content removed from his site. I even contacted the EFF on this, but they do not deal with issues of copyright.

My website has completely changed since this event, so to illustrate the point I have to point to an older copy of the site that can be compared to the stolen version (which has undergone some changes too for that matter). Keep in mind we are talking content here not appearance. What was specifically taken from my site are the website descriptions and categories that were present in my directory. Here are some example pages:

Now, my site has grown considerably since then, and undergone many changes. In one sense I don't care that this individual has ripped off my pages because my site is progressing and is probably far better known, its also a more useful resource (and I think I can do webpages better than the other guy too). OTOH, I am really pissed off at the offense of having my site content stolen and being unable to do anything about it other than complain. I don't have the cash to take someone to court so that is not a feasible option, and I am tired of chasing this guy from one ISP to another (I have had his site removed from 3 servers so far and it just keeps reappearing elsewhere).

I found out about this because someone who had submitted their site to my website informed me that the same description had appeared on this other website, even though they did not submit their site description to that other site. Also, one of my websites ("Atho's Pagan Files Collection", now a part of Omphalos itself) is actually listed in the Bookstore's directory and *I* sure as hell didn't submit it there.

When I first discovered this I posted a complaint on my website accusing the other site of ripping me off, then contacted the webmaster. I should have done it the other way around, cause I got his back up and it became impossible to reason with him on this issue. My mistake freely admitted here. When I asked him about the similiarities between our site content, he had two comments:

Its just a coincidence that they are so similar.
I don't own a copyright on the contents of my site because it is not possible to have a copyright on webcontent.

So he refuses to listen to me, and the only recourse I have is to keep chasing him from server to server or sue him in court. I don't have the time or cash for either.

i don't get it. how is the GPL limiting one's freedoms?

Practical example:

I have this logbook program which connects Ball GC varios with Macintoshes.

There's a number of pieces of GPL code it would be rather nifty to work into this program. But I can't, because the GC is officially certified as an Acceptable Recording Instrument for the purpose of proving FAI world record claims ... and to maintain that certification, the GC's control protocols may not be publicly disclosed. Which open sourcing the code in any fashion would do, in their opinion.

Yes, they're stupid. No, I cannot change the FAI's mind even if I was idiotic enough to try. So I can use BSD code, public domain code, whatever, and provide a free as in beer program like I am. It would be a better free as in beer program if I could use GPL code, but I can't because the FAI are morons.

Sooo ... the GPL here is limiting my freedom to make the best free as in beer program I can from publicly available source code, which means that the pilot community doesn't have as good a free resource as they would otherwise. Nobody at FAI gives a flying fuck about computers, never mind Open Source, there is no way that going to the trouble of changing this would ever get on the agenda in the foreseeable future.

And who exactly is benefiting? Nobody I can see.

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

But have a look at The Netcraft Web Server Survey. Apache took a beating of -1.65 percents while IIS gained 2.78 percents. Even when Webjump is the reason, it's quite a massive loss for Apache.

What could we do to gain more share? It looks like the Mindcraft "tests" are still hurting and badly. But we have to fight back and with style. Apache on a unix box has lots of advantages. It's free, fast, secure and rock solid. It doesn't need expensive hardware. There are also many big sites using Apache. But somehow it is not enough.

I guess Apache needs an "Web hosting for Dummies"-book as it's more a rule than exception that IIS-sites are run by dummies. Also it would be cool to start "selling" Apache. Sell a Linux+Apache-installation for exactly the same price as NT but donate all the money to for example the Red Cross. That would make a nice ad :-)

Lewis Mettler is incensed in his ZDnet talkback article that the security flaw he "brought up" isn't raising SlashDot headlines around the planet. The very foundations of OpenSource aren't sinking in FUD. It comes as quite a shock to him that "almost all Linux supporters just resort to personal insults rather than address the issue."

So, why is this? Lewis's original article does raise some good points, but not new ones by any standards [1]. And his dismissal of the relevance of the problem of trust to closed-source (binary) programs is ill-founded given the ease with which an experienced person can hack binaries. Or, for that matter, replace a closed-source binary with a newly compiled open-source one.

But by far the worst problem Lewis is having with his argument is his failure to realise he is stating the obvious. Or at the very least the well known. No one with computer security knowledge can be bothered arguing, so all he's hearing from are the me-toos and ACs.

Lewis, you'll raise headlines and win the attention of serious UNIX administrators when you tell us something we don't know. And hey, you've finally got your airtime on SlashDot anyway.

The TalkBack article, while I won't go so far as to dismiss it as FUD, strikes me as whiny, at least... 30 posters flame poor Mr. Berst, and suddenly the Linux community is a bunch of immature brats. Heck, if a news agency can't get 30 flames out of an article, it's not doing its job.

The security problem that this article refers to (http://lewismettler.software- engineering.webjump.com/) seems accurate, but obvious. The gist of it is, with totally open source, there's nothing stopping Bad People from rewriting the code to do Evil Things. However, this just isn't all that startling a revelation. If an intruder can't get into your system, it won't work. If it's someone who already has access, Open Source is irrelevant to the issue -- anyone with the time and know-how can patch or introduce malicious software to any OS, open or not. In short, this seems to me like a rather shallow observation. Maybe I missed something.

As to the other article, I'm not sure whether Stallman is becoming a crank in his old age, or if the media is simply overeager to paint him as such. Obviously, a breakdown of the cooperative culture of Open Source is just the sort of thing any number of journalistic doomsayers would love to see -- not to mention The Redmond Menace. On the other hand, Stallman's behavior of late bespeaks an individual with a dire need to chill out a little. I guess my perspective is, I don't care what Stallman wants to call it, I'm just happy that it works.
