Opencroquet It is stunning, biggest drawback is needing openGL which for the life of me I can't get going under Linux. Thus I have only tested on win2k where it is great. Download and try it, it is smalltalk based. It is built for decentralised use. It is very scaleable. It also does not like NATs so thats is a slowing point.
It is probably not going to change the world this week, but once more people are working on it and it gets around NAT and if openGL was not so critticle then I am sure lots linked up worlds would start happening.
Words can not describe it properly, you got to try it. Have a look at the demo videos of interactions. Technically it scores well mostly because so little bandwidth is required for people to share worlds, it does require half decent machines for the computations but anything in the last few years is good enough (ie in the GHz range)
Micro payments are useable, just in need of a business model to use them e-gold is very useable and free to open an account in about 30 seconds! even better once you have that e-gold account you can open a 1mdc account they store e-gold for you to avoid storage and transfer fees, once they have a big enough user base they will charge small transfer fees (smaller than e-golds tiny fee) for account holders below a certain ballance. Or at least that seems the idea, I am just a happy user enjoying micro payments and NO fees. Compare that to how paypal rips me off (I am an international paypal user, works out I lose about 5%)
Most of my transactions are bigger than micro but not all.
Anyway to show one good use of micropayments I will pay the first 10 people to mod me up, advise me of your e-gold account number (and if you have 1mdc the initials for the account), allow me time to pay you, I am working and on the road.
I have another interest in anonymous money, but that is another subject, if interested google should show my interests or if your even slacker, email me.
It helps set the stage for banning computers that do not have copy protection (DMCA / CBDTPA)
You can build your own, cheap parts can be sourced and what you can do with them is getting even better.
It is getting harder to repair comercial products, that is true. It is also even more motivation to build your own.
It wont stop you getting ripped off when someone does not deliver, but you wont get ripped off by e-gold, and if you sell you can be sure that once the funds hit you they can not be sucked back with a charge back.
You can grab this and change the link targets and account number and accept donations/subscr iptions/micropayments/whatever
Voluntary donations is probably the best way to go.
Get some freedom and help expand the possibilities
GoldenAgents is a group of individuals around the world that assist in small non-comercial e-gold exchanges.
You can use e-gold for buying from Amazon without a credit card by using BananaGold or grab Thinkgeek items via MetalProxy
If you want to get paid for your open source programing then set up a donation pagejust change account numbers and link targets to suit
The other place to check out is Fairtunes to keep music artists well fed in the face of hideous recording company contracts. They take VISA paypal and e-gold;)
Try it, it is just like what is described at http://www.yafla.com/rants/micropay/page4.htm except that I still provide my site for free (easy to restrict, but that would not be nice in my opinion)
Setting up an e-gold account is painless and free, if all the open source projects would do it then maybee we would make progress a bit faster.
I am working on writing some code to dump to and from these cards hooked up to the parallel port.
If anyone wants to assist, or already has done so, let me know.

Ditch the bank and go to anonymous electronic money.
The story was in search of anon-e-money and while there is no hard conclusion yet! It at least seems a lot closer.
Set yourself up with an e-gold account and use that for your transactions, banks as they are now, are only interested in shareholder profits, not customers at all.
the details are on my website (under Z180), fairly simple to build. If anyone wants to assist let me know.

I looked into buying some of the cards mentioned and found that there are none left:( You can get some nice new ones(2mbit) but instead of $150 they are about $250+GST, initial price quoted was $310 thats $165 for PCMCIA card and $145 for ISA or PCI adapter. Plus add on our 10% GST.
Alternatively you could build your own.
If anyone has some old cards for sale at reasonable price, I am in the Perth area W.A!
This prompts em to talk about the fact that there really seems to be little resistance to the 'big media' sure we have these little forums, but everything said is seen. I have looked at various underground sites and they all seem the same, nothing very serious is ever said or done.
Is it just a sad fact that the required level of paranioa is such that nothing can happen? Has big brother won because the very places we would go to for joining the resistance are run by 'The Party'?
To try and find others requires sticking my head uncomfortably high, not a pleasant feeling.

If I get in I will listen to everyone.
As there are open source projects scattered everywhere I thought that setting up in.cx might be a good collecting place. Did not end up as the ideal but I am sitting still till 2005 at least.
If you have a software project you get listed pretty easy, if your project does not fir under software or is a mixture of soft/firm/hard then make sure you get an entry into open collector
If people would like to have a domain off of mine then maybee something could be worked out. (can't do it yet as I don't host my own content, is framed out from.cx; but if a few people are interested then it could happen)

P2P is not centralised, this is different from almost all comercial models of selling content.
Centralised content distribution lends itself to censorship and control.
P2P ensures free speech. It is the modern equivelant of word of mouth.
In this climate of mass-consumerisim and mass-media word of mouth is something that the next generation is mostly ignorant of.
a valid example of P2P is freenet. Freedom of speech is legitimate. Some things need to be said.
Voluntary donations is probably the best way to go.

A side note that in the future carbon nano-tubes might be used to shift heat.
They act as thermal supercondutors by directing thermal noise as a one dimensional acoustic wave.
I'm on a really slow link so you will have to hunt your own links but any nono site should carry details.
(note: electrical superconductors are lousy at thermal transmission)
