2D Portal
And if you can't wait for some 2d portal action, there's a flash game: http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php Very fun, and someone has actually created a map pack for the original Portal inspired by levels in the flash game.

The Flash Version Mappack
While you're waiting for Portal 2, play the FV mappack if you haven't already. It introduces some new game mechanics, and would itself have been an OK sequel (or prequel), except it's a totally free mod instead.

Assuming one was unfamiliar with Portal: the Flash Version which came out some time ago.

Re:Wait.
Before ASCIIpOrtal came along, it would have been easy to argue that the game play mechanics of portal would have been impossible or at least diminished without 3D graphics; now it is much more difficult to make that argument.
No, actually, Portal: The Flash Version made that point nearly two years ago (the copy on Newgrounds has a submission date on it of October 9, 2007).

Another non-3D version of Portal
Cool.
Until this project is finished, may I recommend Portal: The Flash Game ?

Re:Innovative
Uh... what's so innovative about swiping someone else's gameplay and name?
Oh, it's in 2D? It might be cross platform? Yeah, been done.

Re:Innovative
There's 2D, and there's poor graphics. I found the flash game based on portal to be a lot of fun. It had simple graphics, but they were good enough to make the game fun without having to memorise a list of symbol to thing mappings. In some ways, I found this more fun than the original. A lot of the puzzles in portal seemed to be 'jump through this portal and then, while you're rotating, hit this small bit of wall,' while the puzzles I enjoy most are the ones where you have to figure out which bit of wall to hit. The ASCII version seems to be very similar to the flash one with a few tweaks.

This is a great flash game, and all of it's maps were ported to Portal proper. -

Re:Nah
Portal wouldn't be Portal if it was a 2D platformer
This whole thread has been a nonstop parade of misinformation, but I have to stop it here. There is a Portal 2D version, and the levels created there have even been translated back into Portal map packs, and picked up as part of Portal: Still Alive for the 360.
And Metal Gear has changed a few times ("Uh oh, the truck have started to move!"), and I dare say people hated how Solid DIDN'T really use the 3rd dimension and retained a lot of the usual 2D gameplay.

Re:Damn!
Try this. They claim it's 3.5 hours of game time, but the puzzles are *hard*, so it takes more like a day.

Physics is Phun
A well made 2D Flash version of Portal:

Re:Forget portal
Try the 3-D conversion of "Portal: the Flash Version". Still nowhere near as hard as an older puzzle game, but it's a lot harder than the vanilla game.
-
Re:perhaps they realize..
Smarter? Are you kidding? Portal was far easier than any old puzzle or adventure game.
One hour.
Given that it was a trainer disguised as a whole game with a complete storyline, that's not altogeter surprising -- though you would have missed most of the story presentation at that speed, so it's no wonder you hated it. (Anyway, given that the current speed run record is ca. 25 minutes, I strongly suspect your "one hour" is, shall we be polite, an exaggeration.)
However, did you notice that there are community-created maps -- Or were you too busy slagging it off? Maybe you've tried the 3-D conversion of "Portal: the Flash Version"? (I bet that'll take you only one hour as well.)

Portal...

For those for whatever reason without the 3D one. Maybe even for those who finished portal... -
Re:More Portal needed!!!
Yeah, I'm hoping someone (Valve or someone else) will at least release some more maps for Portal.
You may be interested in Portal: The Flash Version. 2D side-scroller, lacking the GLaDOS AI, but the gameplay is similar and has dozens of puzzles.
