Play Free or Die - The Best Free Web Games
mlimber writes "Slate has an article up on the best free web games. Just what is needed for testing out that new laptop you got for Christmas." These games are considerably more fun than I thought they'd be -- most of them seem to work well with Firefox on Linux (though some require a Windows-only download). And when Salon says "Ayiti: The Cost Of Life makes the Oregon Trail look like Candy Land," they mean it -- most games don't need to caution you that "if the whole family is dead, you lose."
One of the best Flash games released this season is Key to Adventure. It's playable on the PC or Wii over on WiiCade, and currently holds a front-page spot over on NewGrounds. Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that WiiCade sponsored the game, meaning that it's now possible to get paid for creating Flash games for the Wii.
Javascript + Nintendo DSi = DSiCade

For those for whatever reason without the 3D one. Maybe even for those who finished portal...
XML is like violence. If it doesn't solve the problem, use more.
To add a disclaimer to my post, I am associated with WiiCade, so take my post with a grain of salt. That being said, the game really is good. Feel free to check out the NewGrounds reviews (I am NOT associated with them) or just play the game for yourself. :-)

Not so much of a web game, but surely one of the best free games on the internet.
Give me Classic Slashdot or give me death!
How could they forget Desktop Tower Defense?

Those are the best free web games out there? Damn, I'd sure hate to see what the crap games are like! Even Kitten Cannon has more to redeem it than these things.
Chelloveck
I give up on debugging. From now on, SIGSEGV is a feature.
There are some great open source games that can run on multiple platforms. For example Battle for Wesnoth or Colossus.
One could also download the Fedora Games Spin Live DVD iso and have access to lots more free games that only run on Linux. With the Live DVD you can run them without messing up your PC that normally runs Windows.
That article missed a great time waster. I haven't played any of the others but http://www.puzzlepirates.com// has certainly eaten up a lot of my free time.
I'm too lazy to compose a creative sig.
They left out this http://www.naken.cc/java/goatse/ :)
RASTERWERKS I waste far too many a lunch hour at my desk! Pretty full featured for a FPS in your browser. Enjoy!
What about the ever popular Particracy political simulation?

Dan Mayer: my blog, essays, art, etc
(All kidding aside, the games there are pretty well done, and all you need is a Flash player and a working copy of Adblock to kill the Ritalin-inspired banners)

I'm sorry but how could they forget Kingdom of Loathing? I've played that game for years and it has still kept me entertained.
That tower defense is good. :)
Of course no list like this is complete without a mention of
Kingdom of Loathing
An Adventurer is You!
There is no -1 Disagree mod. Slashdot.org/faq defines mod options. USE IT.
this game is addictive!
I've yet to find many games with the replay value of Proximity or Bloxors. Fancy Pants Adventure, Magnetism, Circlo, and Circlo 2 were pretty cool, too. Games that have a definitive best trick for each level don't quite replay as well as games with a more random element AFAIAC.
For my money (or lack of it), Gunz (http://gunzonline.com) is a blast. It's simple, addictive, and just flat out fun. I keep thinking it would be a great game to port over to the Xbox Live. Everyone I've ever shown the game to is immediately goes home and downloads it.
i'm on an azerty keyboard, so the wasd keylayout is unusable... are you guys planning on letting the players configure the keys so it's playable, or am i supposed to temprarily change my keyboard settings just to play your game?
Try out Ankhet at http://www.ankhet.org./ For an introduction, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ankhet.

Strange how no one mentioned Utopia yet.
Pretty famous team-based strategy browser game. It's changed dramatically over the years, but it's still alive.

One of my favorite browser games is at http://worldofdungeons.net/. It plays like a classic dungeon crawl game where you make a hero, equipt them, then run them through adventures every 7 hours. It's very group oriented (group play is almost mandatory) and has a lot of depth. It's been translated into 4 languages (french/german/spanish/english) and has active communities in all of them. It's not completely free, you can only pick your hero from one of 3 classes (out of the game's 14) with a free account.
If you don't have any objections to following recruitment links, you could earn me a small in-game bonus if you click the link below and end up making an account.

Another fun game is at http://sryth.com/. It's a completely text based adventure game- not like interactive fiction or MUDs, more like a choose your own adventure story.

I've spent many-a-hour on Ngame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N_(game) Why isn't it on the list? One of the best platformers I've ever played.
He completely misses Maple Story, Rappelz, and Dungeon Runners, among others.
Maple Story, a cute side scrolling MMO.
Rappelz, an MMORPG by GPotato who has a total of 5 free online games to play that'll kill a lot of time.
Dungeon Runners by the makers of Guild Wars. For Dungeon Runners think a spoof of Diablo 2 meets WOW.
