Re:Yes and no!
*Sighs*
-often had a plain old DVD compatible layer (so the same disc will also play in the car/bedroom or such -- i'm not getting a blu-ray player for the car anytime soon, nor buying the same movie twice for that, nor reencoding them) Oh really? Cos I only hear from Amazon that people bought HD-DVD's by mistake and then complain they can't play it on their old DVD player. I can only find 2 out of the hundreds of HD-DVD titles on amazon and their far from big titles. -cost far less (even before price cuts, and sony is also losing money on PS3 sales) No it doesn't. And Sony has said they are now pretty much breaking even on the PS3 sales. -from what i've seen, the titles played faster (damn slow BD-J crap, damn slow players, etc) -- it can take seen several minutes of wait to play a Blu-Ray disc... (HD DVD used simple html-like markup, with free dev tools/full docs and all) Probably true to some extend, if it wasn't that 85% of all blu-ray players are PS3's. Having a better (Java) language for interactivity is a plus in my book. The *ONLY* advantage Blu-Ray had was more disc space, which is unnecessary -- just look at the DVD9-sized x264 reencodes from many groups out there... They look as good as the retail disc to me (on a fairly high end TV, and I'm not blind either). On a 25GB disc, that would still leave you with 14GB left for extra audio tracks and extras. From a computer storage/backup standpoint, that DOES make Blu-Ray better, but as for a entertainment/video format, not. How is that not a major advantage, considering it will no doubt also become the main choice for your future pc storage? How is being able to upscale to 8 layers / 200GB not something very important for the next optical storage format? Don't we want that format to be the same as the HD optical format? And how about the entire season of a tv show in HD on 1 or 2 discs?
Anyway, the most important thing is that we have one HD format now, so new HD consumers don't have to be afraid to cut themselves with the wrong format. I'm glad it's Blu-Ray, but HD-DVD would've been acceptable as well. -
Re:I don't care for the why.You can see the ratio but not the total sales of discs here. Blu Ray is killing HD DVD and the situation is even worse for HD DVD in other regions. Clearly not every PS3 owner plays Blu Ray discs but clearly a great many of them are. Not least because the PS3 is an great player in addition to being a great console.
The costs of disc production are not significantly different for either format and sometimes Blu is cheaper by virtue of only requiring a single layer disc vs dual for HD DVD. You can see a fairly old article here. Chances are prices have dropped since that was written.

Re:Actually there are NO HD-DVD burners yet
This February article supports the notion that Blu Ray discs cost slightly more to replicate. The problem for HD DVD is it's not that much more, and if Blu Ray sales are 2x HD-DVD then the quantity alone might chop any advantage for HD DVD. The Blu Ray might also work out cheaper if it can get away with a single layer but the HD-DVD is forced to use dual layer.

Not quite as easy as one-click DVD Shrink yet, but still pretty simple.
So I guess you'll be picking up a Blu-Ray player tonight? -
Re:PS3
actually they havent gone with hd-dvd. there are several releases on blu-ray and several on hd-dvd. one distributor came out to say that they were having trouble getting houses to press their discs, but that was about it. one studio seems to have had problems and that is being spread as gospel FUD. vivid and several other companies have had blu-ray discs pressed with little to no issue. something is amiss. the industry hasnt banded together to make any sweeping announcements.
hd-dvd supporters also mention that since their industry like to press cheap discs quickly, they are most likely to go with hd-dvd since it is the cheaper alternative, but even that is a widely accepted fallacy. the reason blu-ray discs are usually the same price or cheaper than hd-dvd releases is due to the fact that despite the widely held myth, blu-ray movies are actually cheaper per GB to produce than hd-dvd releases, since most hd-dvd releases require dual layer discs.

Re:cool.
do people still believe this? sony has no say so on what form of content gets printed on blu-ray. sony themselves may not allow porn to be replicated using its plants, but thats the extent of sony's say-so. sony didnt stop porn from getting printed to UMD. sony didnt send cease and desist letters to websites that cater to delivering porn to its PSP. why do you think they randomly stopped turning a blind eye to something that helped do in one of their first formats? this is FUD.
as a matter of fact, there have been several pornographic blu-ray movie studios producing content in japan since late 2005. vivid, one of the US's largest distributors of pornographic films just simultaneously released a movie on both formats here in the states as well.
look all this up. dont believe the FUD. just because one studio comes out and tells their sob story does not in fact make it true.

one of the reason blu-ray movies are cheaper or equal price to their HDDVD releases is due to the fact that they are cheaper per gig to produce. this flies against one of the major bulletpoints of hd-dvd. -
Blu Ray porn has been released in Japan
Third, Sony's balking at allowing prawn into the format (like they did for betamax), which is (IMHO) likely to deal them another severe blow.
I don't know if Sony "allowed" it, but porn has already been released in Blu Ray format in Japan by GLAY'z (warning: link to Japanese language porn site).GLAY'z have apparently released two titles on Blu Ray (I love the Jap-Engrish descriptions):
- High school student business - The Abnormality Sex story of the JK that starts after school. The guest of JK is a man. A ffluent [sic] men pay money. JK gives the perfect body. Pleasure arises when mutual sense of values is corresponding.
- Vacation in Guam - Naked sex holidays in Guam. Sex nudie vacation in guam.
