Re:Okay, okay ... aaand, you lost me.
No. The author has no idea what quantum physics is, and is using it as a magic wand made of pure bullshit. Uttering the phrase "quantum physics" is, of course, a pretty common and cliched way to sound impressive without knowing anything, but it demonstrates that the "honest intellectual inquiry" thing is just a disguise, and the professor is here to sell snake oil.
Remember this movie? The same kind of crock of shit. I actually had friends who were shocked that I refused to watch it; apparently I was close-minded for deciding beforehand (based on reviews) that it was worthless. Just as you and I are close-minded for refusing to consider the possibility that the author of that tripe you quoted might be on to something real

Re:Sorry, No.
> Religion and Science are 100% incompatible. Religion = "I Believe", Science = "I can show/demonstrate/repeat". These two ways of looking at the world are not, and never will be, compatible.
Twenty years ago I'd have said something similar. My pendulum had swung to solid science side, but I kept wondering about the "unexplainable" .. nah, not the little green men and Area 51 or whatever. Sorta like the unanswered questions of science. Fine, science will eventually explain everything .. until then we can still wonder about things. Maybe I'm just going senile but 10 or 11 dimensions in string theory sure doesnt sound like science to me. It sounds like math voodoo ! I also got a kick out of quantum mechanics .. now that's voodoo ! so that's modern science ? the almighty "observer" determining the outcome of events. That sure makes it sound rather subjective as opposed to objective. Which by the way should be a criteria for science .. no ? Quantum Mechanics sounds like religion now, doesnt it ?
I ran across an interesting film that helped confuse me some more : http://www.whatthebleep.com./ There are quite a few scientists in it. Unless everyone in the film is a charlatan, I'd suggest it to people with an open mind (and that dont feel threatened by opposing points of view). -
Umm
He KNOWS which set of hardware he is playing with. Dr. Masaru Emoto discovered that crystals formed in frozen water reveal changes when specific, concentrated thoughts are directed toward them using the same method...Not very scientific.
I'm not saying he is not right, he probably is. But I could have guessed that without even trying them. -
Re:Why download bootleg movies?
Hmmm...
You'd have to see the 'Quantum Rabbit Hole Extended Edition'. The first movie was greatly abbreviated and tried to smash too many things together all at once. It's also not a movie about quantum physics. Quantum physics is only one aspect of the movie. It covers a cross-section of topics and tries to fit them altogether.
In either respect, both movies get quantum physics right -- it's just that not all of the movie is about quantum physics.
If you really think you know more about quantum physics than these PhDs, some of whom are world-reknowned quantum physicists, then I think you'd probably better think again unless you're posting from CERN. -
Re:Why download bootleg movies? If there's one thing I'd like to know about the P2P controversy, it's this: why would people bother to waste bandwidth and disk space downloading bootleg copies of most of the garbage that the MPAA (not to mention RIAA member labels) attempts to foist upon the public? If anything, the MPAA should be paying people to watch garbage like Meet the Spartans and Untraceable. The MPAA does have some redeeming content. The What the Bleep series is good example of this.

Re:Pegs that variable in the Fermi equation...
there is a distinct possibility that every planet orbits in the same plane as its sun... and every star in the same plane as our sun... and every solar system, and every galaxy and everything...ever...orbits or otherwise travels in the same plane. IF any of this is actually true

if you have not yet, bleep you! -

God and Science
There is a great movie that delves into the higher power of the universe. It is called "What the Bleep do We Know?!?" It is a very interesting program in that it basically looks at what science has figured out about how things work, from the atomic universe and quantum physics, to the neurochemicals and the operation of the brain. It poses questions about multiple universes stemming from a Schrödinger's cat like situation, but extended to the world around you and desisions you make.
It really makes you think about what else is out there and what gives us our self-awareness. Atomic material at it's smallest quantum level is gone from existence as well as there, they pop into and out of existence. The Schrödinger's cat "experiment" says that the cat is both alive and dead until you look in the box. What is so special about you looking that changes what the quantum world is doing. So far nobody has figured out what the "observer" is, or the soul or whatever you want to call it. Without someone observing the universe around us, it doesn't really exist. It is all quite deep, and I am probably explaining it totally wrong, but it is all based on the science that we have figured out so far. And it is very cool and makes you think. Plus, it isn't written in a "we know everything" tone. It is more like "here is a possible way the universe works based on what we know so far."
Did you know that thoughts can affect water? When pure water is placed in a bottle with a lable on it and then photographed using a dark field microscope, it takes on different crysaline structures depending on the thoughts that are projected onto the water. If thoughts can do that to water, what can they do you you since you are what, 80% water. Give a possible reason for why placebos work as well as they do, as well as why a hypochondriac can have real symptoms.
Definately a movie I would recommend to the /. crowd. Even if you don't beleve in a higher power or a God, as it has the possibility to open your mind some and make you think about the possibilities out there. I don't think that science has to be at war with religion. I think religion has tried to explain the universe and God, but was a poor explaination due to their limited understanding at the time. As we know more about how the universe works, we can also know more about what God is. -
"What the Bleep..." has a nice animation of this
This article discusses one of the central points of the movie What the Bleep Do We Know?!" which uses lots of computer animation for us visual learners.
