Re:Where's the flying car?
The Scarpar is almost flying.
I would add, however, that it has been beaten to the market by a few years by the wheelman, a kick-ass austrailian motorcycle board where you stand inside the wheels. -

This thing is way better than a segway!

Obligatory Wheelman Link
It doesn't climb stairs, alone or in pairs, but WILL roll over you neighbor's dog. It's not fit for a snack but fits on your back, it's log - log - log. Er, Wheelman.
Seriously though, I would buy one of the Centaurs, if for nothing else than hunting and collecting fossils. Some of the terrain I go out on is steep for people but easily handled by ATVs.
I've seen Segways being used by parking meter guys here in Seattle with big ass steel boxes on the side, I imagine the same kind of saddlebag outfit could be made to work on a Centaur for packing equipment and specimens into.
Why would I use it over an ATV? Balance and braking for one, less noisy, little (no?) risk of starting fires from hot exhaust and it looks like fun. If it could carry extra batts, all the better. -
Add chicks
Everything is better with hot chicks, but somethings are just cool on their own. -
Of course not
The Wheelman is much cooler.
The wheelman is faster, cheaper, and has a greater operating range than the Segway. It is even very, very safe, so long as you would consider riding a skateboard at 20 MPH on asphault wearing nothing more than a bikini "safe".

The WheelMan
The Wheelman is much cheaper and appears to have about the same risk level. Its only $1500 for a motorized device that you stand on and doesn't have anything to hold on to. I've seen these in action and the seem to work well.

Nice Gadget. I prefer the Wheelman (TM) though...
The Wheelman comes in 3 different flavors, sports an internal combustion engine and therefore packs a tad more oomph to climb steep slopes and the occasional scateboard-halpipe.
:-)
And what sissy needs a handlebar anyway? -

Terms and Conditions
This is the best method I've ever seen to get someone to read the Terms and Conditions. On the right you have a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo: "If you kill yourself with the Wheelman it's not our fault" and on the left you have a HOT CHICK in a wet t-shirt complete with nipples poking out and a sexy smile. For once, I'm glad I read the legal bullshit!

Two stroke enginesonly true solution is to use two stroke engines, which cost more, and are too large to be practical in something like this...
I have absolutely no idea if this statement is true in the sense that the only true solution is to use two stroke engines....
2 Stroke 52cc
But I thought I'd point out that on the wheelman site (BushPig) there is this:
Does this mean that this solution even though it would not be practical to have two stroke engines, it has such an engine??
Sorry about that bit of sarcasm, just thought I'd point out a flaw (I'm picky so shoot me)
