Mercedes-Benz "Distronic" system very similar...
I've used an Mercedes M-Class that has very similar technology (they're brand name is Distronic). It does the flashing light, and will auto-brake down to idle speeds. Moderate technical teardown: http://www.whnet.com/4x4/distronic.html Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFOh-jvjRI8 (no affiliation with either site)

Engeneering diffrence
Are you sure ?
Engeneering is much more critical than just plain mass.
If a car is designed to withstand very high shocks, it doesn't matter if they come from a wall (fixed to the ground) or another car (which will decelerate too), as long as it can resist from all critical directions (including shocks from top if heavy car ends up landing on top of small car).
That and use seat-belt + airbag + avoid to have free sharp objects inside the car. -
Re:roll cages with covershere's some video of a smart car impacting a mercedes E class: http://www.off-road.com/mbenz/videos/Sclass_Smart
. avi From this webpageIt doesn't "bounce around", but i think it's fair to say that it does "bounce off" the larger vehicle.
I'm sure it's survivable, but i suspect i'd be more comfortable in the larger Merc (that said, i'm a fan of the smart car concept, my main problem with it is that i think it's overpriced for what it is).

Some cool Braking functionality
One functionality on Mercedes-Benz vehicles that has really changed brake technologies is Sensotronic Brakes (SBC). Many of the features of SBC have not been brought over and activated in the United States such as "Traffic Jam Assist" and "Soft Stop." These items help both to prevent fatigue and increase comfort, resulting in less stressful (and more relaxing) driving.

Why TCP...
when UDP has so much less overhead?

"Worthless Navigation Systems"
Now why can't auto makers put this kind of thing in a dash instead of mostly worthless GPS navigation and DVD units?
Several Mercedes-Benz GPS navigation systems actually do support the reception of traffic information embedded inside of radio signals. -
Re:More Information Regarding Tele-Aid
Yes, it certainly is.
Unfortunately, it is rumored that Mercedes will be modifying the body style and replacing the ML's independent suspension with a unibody implementation in 2004; many potential customers are unsatisfied with its truck-like ride. The current models, however, are astonishingly capable off-road.

fiber a reality?!?!?!
http://www.whnet.com/new.html says a trial program in Palo Alto has 10 MB/sec (probably megabit/sec) for $90 and 100 MB/sec for $170. (the link looks down now) Not bad but looks priced a little more toward the business end.
