Hmmm, this is intesting. I know that Toyota and a bunch of other major car companies have figured out that it is cheaper to immunize your employees against the flu/other sicknesses, instead of paying their wages while they're home sneezing.

The same thing goes for safety, I know at Mercedes they're all about safety and injury prevention, which therefore prevents them from paying workman's comp without getting any value from the worker.

So this data implies that computer trouble has become as much as a problem as sickness is, I wonder when some company is going to take a major initiative to fix this.

And you know (, I don't wan't to blame it on windows directly, but sometimes I wonder... How many major auto companies use windows products? Ok, time to stop before I starting getting flamed...

Just tell them you recently moved, and now can't get a signal. When the retention person gets on the line, tell him to go screw, and then get yourself a new contract.

P.S. - Amazon has some great deals right now on the t610, it's really good phone.

Compared to previously described QKD systems, the major difference in the NIST system is the way it identifies a photon from the sender among a large number of photons from other sources, such as the sun. To make this distinction, scientists time-stamp the QKD photons, then look for them only when one is expected to arrive. "To be effective, this observation time has to be very short," says NIST physicist Joshua Bienfang. "But the more often you can make these very brief observations, then the faster you can generate keys.

Assuming "very short" means milliseconds, then without some other even honking faster send/receive technology there is no way you can intercept the photons and resend them without the receiver noticing.

  8. Email as permanent record system... on Correlation Between Stress and Technology? · · Score: 0, Offtopic
For me, email is my way of having a permanent record system. For me, that's very helpful. If someone tells me something random, and I know I probably won't remember, I have them email me, and then I have a permanent record of it (I never delete emails). Phone numbers, ideas, papers, it's all there. The search function in Mail (I use a Mac) seems to nail down what I am looking for pretty quick too.

Also, totally unrelated, I've done two internships in Germany, and without this dictionary I would not have been able to figure out half the things I did. The forums there were very helpful too. So that's how technology has helped me, and I accept it, I am not a luddite. :>)

So Apple jacks the price on the iPod, sells a couple thousand, and makes 50 bucks more on what cost them only 5$ (me thinks?) to engrave.
