    And how much do I pay to develop for any other PHONE? (Hey, it costs me 9 billion dollars to develop some software for a rocket, lets compare it to the cost to develop the software that runs on my watch! ) (note, numbers are totally arbitrary)

    Blackberry and Windows Mobile both have Java available, so you can develop (and distribute) for free wherever you want.

    Windows Mobile direct dev requires VS 2005 or better (or you can use embedded VC depending on version targetted) - this is a cost for native/managed winmo stuff, but if you dont want to certify it for Marketplace be my guest - nobody cares.

    The Windows Marketplace costs seem to be 100 dollars per app , and 100 dollars per year though [ http://developer.windowsmobile.com/Help.aspx ]

    There is a "locked down appstore" coming from Microsoft. The difference is that you are not forced to use it. (Browse with your WM phone to http://client.marketplace.windowsmobile.com/).

    Apple's policy may be messy, but for me the important difference is that MS doesn't seem to be interested in individual developers (see faq. As a result, I (currently iPhone developer) do not care for them either.

    Have you ever even looked at an iPhone? Google Maps is built-in. You don't need to run it in the browser.

    Speaking of making no sense, this one always makes me laugh. What's so amazing about the Google Maps app? Why do I have this suspicion that if you peeked "under the hood", you'd see it was a link to Safari, pointing to maps.google.com (maybe maps.google.com/iphone), with a command line parameter or two to hide some UI? But "OMG!! REVOLUTIONARY!"

    You can install Live Search (with directions, with GPS integration, with realtime traffic) as a standalone app on Windows Mobile devices, so forgive me for being underwhelmed by the legions of "OMG, ITS A STANDALONE APP!"

    yea the IE is crap but i like Opera (got a free licence from that promotion a while back)

    and i reallllly like 3G + MS Live Search + Blue Tooth GPS

    MS Live Search for WM5 seems alot more polished than using google maps on it..

    and MS Live Search is free (amazed me) http://ls.windowsmobile.com/ they even supprised me that you can download the cab file directly instead of having to use active sync to install the app..
