Re: Article paid by Apple to boo over it.

Upgrade != reinstall
A continuous chain of upgrades from Windows 98se to Windows XP to Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, or from Ubuntu 4.something to 14.04, is plausible. Someone's done it all the way from Windows 1 to 7.

Birth of PC - Altair, not Apple
It really amazes me how badly some people want history to read that Apple started the computer revolution. If there is any one group responsible for starting the home computing boom, it was the Homebrew Computer Club and the advent of the Altair . Please stop trying to make Apple history happen differently than it happened. If anything, Jobs and Gates were douc^H^H businessmen and acted as such trying to screw everyone else over in order to gain wealth and power.

amid the bitching...
... of the arguments over which FOSS office suite had got most users, people should recognise that there have been at least 65 million users of them not using Microsoft Office.
This is a good thing.
mind you, Microsoft says there are 750 million Office users worldwide, so we have a little way to go yet.

Re:No wonder Chrome is gaining users
> But did Google *pay* for Angry Birds to do that?
I have no idea what their contract, if any, with Angry Birds looked like.
But they have certainly been encouraging web developers to do just that, yes.
> And what is your source for that Skype behaviour?
Personal experience, for one thing. You can see a screenshot from the advanced install at http://people.mozilla.org/~khuey/skype-install-2011-10-3.png if you want.
As far as a Google search not finding anything.... https://www.google.com/search?q=skype+chrome+bundling shows http://www.webmasterworld.com/goog/4135280.htm and http://www.winrumors.com/skype-for-windows-updated-to-remove-google-product-bundling/ and http://mynetx.net/6494/skype-removes-google-integration
It also finds, not coincidentally, http://www.osnews.com/comments/25184 (do read the first response too!) and http://www.salsitasoft.com/2011/09/23/wonder-how-chrome-is-growing-market-share-ask-adobe/
A similar search on Bing also finds http://www.quora.com/Just-got-a-Skype-update-and-they-wanted-me-to-install-Chrome-Why

Re:Disappointment
You jest, but Windows Phone is actually more popular than slashdotters think. On top of that it's predicted that with the help of Nokia, Windows Phone will have 12% market share in 2012.

Mod Parent Informative
It's not just funny, it's true!
The software giant has a habit of sending cakes to Mozilla after the foundation ships an update to its Firefox browser. Mozilla's recent Firefox 8 release has stemmed the flow of cupcakes from Redmond. Microsoft didn't ship a cupcake to Mozilla for its Firefox 8 release. "We didn't do it since we thought it was getting to be overkill," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "Every six weeks is a lot of cupcakes", they added.

Re:The IE team has stopped sending cakes
They've actually stopped sending the cupcakes now.

Bing not at 33%
For those of you as baffled as I was at that number, it's not in the article, isn't sourced in the summary, and is patently incorrect. Maybe if Bing and Yahoo did really well in October and you combine them together since they use the same back end, you may be able to approach 33%, but to say that the Bing service itself is at 33% is false.

http://www.winrumors.com/bing-u-s-marketshare-flat-at-14-7-during-september/
They were counting in Yahoo as well. Bing marketshare is essentially flat over the past few months. Yahoo marketshare is decreasing so overall Bing marketshare is shrinking. Don't be surprised if MS gives Firefox an offer they can't refuse, but that will be the end of Firefox if it happens.

Re:35,000 apps
You do realize that Gartner is basically a subsidiary marketing division for Microsoft right? And has been for what, 15 years? Their reports ALWAYS favor Microsoft. Shit, they probably said Bob was going to take over the world. You really have to be dense to believe anything they 'report' on.
You mean a report like this? http://www.winrumors.com/gartner-forecasts-0-market-share-for-microsoft-tablets-in-2015/
Shouting "ALWAYS" doesn't make it true. Care to take that remark back?
Goddamn fanboys and their twisted reality. I seriously don't know if they're stupid enough to believe their shit, or they're just like analysts that like to mislead folks spouting FUD and false information at every chance in hundreds of comments and blog posts. Probably a mix of both?

Has everyone forgotten the OOXML scandal?
Is anyone outside m$ really considering letting them define what a freaking file is from now on after this?. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Surely once Microsoft has bullied their shit into everything once again, we can all trust them and no one will end up having to pay any kind of extortion racket like this, and this, this, this and this.

Re:Broadway
Are BlackBerry phones also headed toward rounding error?
Their manufacturer, RIM, is doing the Nortel thing, so quite possibly. More likely, they'll be bought out.
Flash and HTML5 JavaScript are managed environments; are they likewise headed toward rounding error?
What does that have to do with my observation that WP7, which is an operating system, not a programming language or environment, is already dead? We're already hearing the usual suspects chanting "just wait for Windows 8 on the smartphone!"
Considering that Nokia is now in death-spiral mode. They lost $692 million in the last 3 months alone. At that rate of cash burn, they are out of cash in another 6 quarters - and their cash requirements are only going to rise as they try to launch WP7 phones - it costs a lot to fill the channel, promote, etc.
The billion they got from Microsoft to go with WP7 instead of Android is gone, and they're still half a year away from selling a WP7 phone. Microsoft, having burned through several billion trying to get a foot in the smartphone ecosystem, is going to have to keep the cash flowing.
Considering that 2 out of 3 WP7 phones that were shipped are still sitting unsold on store shelves, it looks like there are now almost as many Android smartphone activations every day as all the WP7 phones ever sold - and Android daily activation rates are increasing by about 5.5% a month.
The only joke bigger than WP7 in the mobile space is Steve Ballmer and the Microsoft Board of Directors. WP7 isn't even on the radar in terms of being a threat to anyone.

Re:Like Microsoft cares
That and Windows Mobile sucks as a mobile or embedded platform.
What makes you think that we're talking about Windows Mobile? See some of the demos for Windows 8 on ARM.

Re:Yes, and?
Apple sues Motorola claiming their Android phones violate patents
Microsoft sues Barnes and Nobles over Android Patent violations in the Nook
Microsoft Sues Motorola for Android patent issues
Oracle is suing Google and if they win, want all revenue from Android to be given to them along with an injunction forbidding sales of all Android phones etc.
I couldn't find anything about Sony suing over Android, but they are suing LG over "Sony Technology" but the details aren't out so maybe that's over Android.
There are MANY more examples than this (such as Microsoft's suit against HTC a while ago) but to say that "None of these companies are harassing people for using Android" is just fallacious. They are. You may return now to your regularly scheduled rant.

Han Shot First
Reading this post and TFA, the chronology seems to be that Tivo sued first. If this is the case, then Microsoft is doing exactly what they should be doing, bitch-smacking Tivo on behalf of its customer, AT&T. This is how companies expect their vendors to cover their asses. Pay attention Google.
-
Re:The Complaint and Patents
You can find confirmation from Microsoft's mouth here.
And in the winrumors link you supplied, it says that MS took this route ".. days after Tivo brought a lawsuit against close Microsoft partner, AT&T". Surprise!

The Complaint and Patents
"Sue" isn't the best choice of words here. It was an ITC Complaint that Microsoft hopes will result in the banning of TiVo imports from Mexico that allegedly infringe on Microsoft's patents. The patents are 5,585,838, 5,731,844, 6,028,604, and 5,758,258. You can find confirmation from Microsoft's mouth here.
