Just get Linux!

Want to remove Gnome?
Here are the instructions for the most common distros.
Generic
rm -rf /opt/gnome
Debian.
apt-get remove gnome
Mandrake
Menu > Configuration > Packaging > Remove software then search for gnome and tick all instances off
Red hat
Just uninstall red hat altogether, it is closely interwined with Gnome that is better getting a gnome hostile distribution.
Sun Java Desktop.
Get SuSE 8.2, its the same thing but without gnome installed
Gnome free distributions. These distributions dont contain gnome.
Arklinux
Xandros
Lindows
Lycoris
TurboLinux
Knoppix the K in it stands for KDE! -

Re:Too expensive for non-geeks
Xanadros has some industry experience, namely Corel Linux. From their corporate background, In August 2001, Xandros acquired the Corel Linux Business Division's award winning software development team with the objective of creating the Xandros Desktop.

Too expensive for non-geeksWhy bother with SuSE for $129, when you can get Xandros (which has the same office functionality) for $99.
And of course Xandros is based on Debian, which I hear has a package management system that is the cats ass.

Re:KDE3
Hope it works, because Mandrake is our last, best hope to break the MS stranglehold on the desktop...
Dunno about that... I'm anxious to see what the initial release of Xandros is like. -
Ripped from my bookmarks: other distrosSome other fits-onna-floppy distros; many of these are security-focused, firewall-appliance type efforts. Disclaimer, this list is of stuff I
/want; to check out when I get the time: I'vfe no idea how good or bad they are, beyond Theo's famous comment about entrusting the most important piece of one's network to the most unreliable piece of hardware in modern computers (approximately). Some of them may actually NOT be floppy-distros, I need to clean up these bookmarks... jesus where did the time go... *sigh*

Re:The thing I don't get.
I still use Corel 1.0 and 1.2 on both machines at home. It was the first Linux OS I tried, and I don't feel much like changing. The only time I wan't running Corel was when I made my own Linux from Scratch distro. Also, where can I get the download for all the Corel Office suites? Every since Xandros took over, I cannot get any of the cool stuff that came with the Corel Updater.

Purchasing the Corel office suite would rock
Bigtime.
When Xandros axquired the codebase to the Linux distro from Corel they deal didn't include the Corel Office 2000 suite, which might be of interest to AOL if they're looking for Linux acquisitions.
This would give Steve Case the customer base for Wordperfect, Quattropro, Paradox, and Corel Presentations, along with the helper calendar and address book applets.
Assuming the Red Hat deal moves forward, AOL would have developer talent from that division to clear up the arguably minor, but critical glitches in that office suite and have an application of unique marketability for Linux corporate desktops.
CO2K relative pathing in the installation script is sloppy. I got around that by installing from root logged in as real root, but that shouldn't be necessary.
That FATAL ERROR dialog box on launch has gotta go. The fix isn't that elaborate: simply go into the /.wpo2000 folder in userland and delete the dead socket. Although it's not that hard, it's dumb, and something I would feel awkward about inflicting on a nontechnical user.
Some kind of simple GUI utility is needed to adjust the font size for the screen display in the WINE implementation CO2K uses.
Looking ahead, the overall dependence on WINE is controversial, and something AOL might want to consider eliminating in a future release, given the availability of a budget and other resources. The WINE implementation is a resource hog, and results in CO2K on Linux running as slow as it's Windoze counterpart. The suite is needed on the market now, however. Waiting for the length of time it would take to create a pure Linux version would be arguably counterproductive.
On the plus side:
Import and export filters for Word and Excel are the best I've ever encountered.
Paradox forms created in Windoze (or win-os2 in my case) work in Linux without any modification whatsoever. (The exception would be if I had anything coded internally that references a specific path.) The entire application programming language was ported successfully.
Offtopic request: If anyone has any insight into getting a mysql ODBC connection working in Paradox for Linux, please let me know.

Re:IE-like browser?
Your problem is that Mandrake blows. I was a diehard 'drake advocate until recently, when their quality started going downhill.
For now I am using Red Hat, with the stock KDE 2.2 install. Although Red Hat doesn't include gazillions of applications like Mandrake does, it's much more stable and polished. Still, it's not really a desktop distro. I'm keeping a close eye on Xandros, which will be based on KDE, Debian and Corel Linux. -
Corel licenses CLOS to XandrosLinuxTodayhas the press release concerning Xandros licensing CLOS from Corel and
In addition to the information found in the press release below,
Xandros has this to say about its plans:
"Xandros is developing a customized Debian-based Linux
distribution that is derived from version 3.0 of the award
winning Corel LINUX OS. It will support both the KDE
and Gnome desktop environments. In addition to the
features that Linux users expect, Xandros will be
distributing significant additions and enhancements.
Furthermore, Xandros is creating a server and enterprise
management solution that will significantly reduce the total
cost of ownership of computing environments. The overall
solution is complete "off the shelf", but Xandros
Professional Services can customize and integrate the
products as well as provide enhancements to legacy
systems as needed. Finally, all Xandros offerings will be
backed by world-class support."
So there is a version 3 of CLOS. What happened to ver 2? The last release was ver 1.1. It is a licensing deal so Corel will still own the distro. Xandros plan enterprise version. I wonder if it is the software part from Rebel? You can see bios of all the the key players at the Xandros web site. It seems like they all were graduates of Corel U(ex employees cut loose in the last bloodbath). They are also supporting Gnome which is a change from CLOS 1.1. Should be interesting.
