Re:Everyone to RealNetworks: just DIE already
> I've always hated RealPlayer, but on the Mac their product is seriously nice. Most of all, what else would you use to play real-streams on the web?
For a stored stream, I use Net Transport to download it, and then the Real Alternative codec to play it in my media player of choice.
As for radio streams: Doesn't WinAmp play those? -
Re:They're all Flash videos
At least with streaming WMV we have options.

Re:Let the best player win!
"... a way to record Windows Media streams to my HD to watch again later."
1) Get Firefox & use it.
2) Goto menu item Tools
3) Select Options...
4) Select Downloads
5) Click on "Ask me where to save every file" in the Download Folder section.
5) Click on the Plug-Ins button (in the File Types section)
6) Find the extension of the movie and click on the checkmark to disable browser support for that extension.
7) Click ok a few times to get out of Options.
8) View source on the page where the video is that you want to save (or do this before step 2).
9) Search for SRC and repeat the search till you find the URL of the movie. (ditto)
10) Highlight and copy the URL from the source. (ditto again)
11) Open a new tab and paste the copied URL. Press ENTER or click on Go.
12) Firefox will bring up a dialog of what you can do with the file. One of the options is to save.
There are easier ways to save the file. Having a program intercept a URL click if it has a certain extension (http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm) and other ways. If you savvy (or want to learn) about web source code, then this way works perfectly fine.

for windows
you can also use NetTransport to save streaming media.
-
Net Transport
Net Transport from XI-Soft will schedule downloads. It supports http, rtsp, and mms. It also has FlashGot integration for Firefox, which makes it super easy to add streams. Give that a look.

NetTransport
NetTransport, it's the Holy Grail of media downloading. The scheduler works well when you get past its idiosyncrasies, but all in all, it's the best tool I've found. And I've been looking for years.

Re:I'd love a breakdown of legal vs. illegal files
Publicly Available Videos (e.g. Star Trek fan videos, Presidential Debates, funny commercials)
Did anybody have a decent BitTorrent of any of the debates? I would have killed to have had one. I wound up finding software to let me download the debate videos from the Washington Post (they had the highest quality streams that I could find) and saving them that way. I could only find one copy on non-bittorrent P2P and it was of extremely low quality.

Re:Political torrents
I would suggest using Net Transport to pull the Real Media files from CSPAN's debate page. Their coverage of the debates was the best of any, as it was just the live feeds of either candidate. And when they were over, no jackass pundits!

net transport
You can save streaming media using Net Transport

Re:So..
I've been using the shareware version of NetTransport, which seems to work quite nicely - give it the
.ram or .asx URL, wait half an hour, and it'll save the 26MB of .rm or .asf data. -
Re:And available for a listen 7 days after...
Or "listen again" right now at rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio4/comedy/tue1830.ra - you can access anything from the past 7 days, without waiting for them to add it. Net Transport seems to be able to download the raw
.ra file if you want a permanent copy. -
Re:Hey!
That's why you download it with NetTransport. Does anyone know of a similar Linux app? Or at least a GPL windows one?
-
Here's mine
- FireFox, how else am I going to find and download the rest?
- AVG AV, so that the next 8 actually are what I want.
- Net Transport, to get the next 7 faster.
- WinRAR, some of the rest require extraction, and whatever one might say about WinRAR, I prefer it.
- WinAmp, so that I can listen
to RadioStorm
while I wait for the rest to download.
- Trillian Pro, so I can tell everyone I am reinstalling.
- NoteTab Pro, I paid for it for a reason after all.
- OpenOffice.org, so that I don't have to wait an hour for it to download when I need to use it later.
- Scorched Earth 3D, for a little fun.
- Synergy , check it out if you wanna know.
