Re:I miss Firefox in this regard
Why limit yourself? I have been using X-Marks (originally Foxmarks) since 2006. Long before FireFox had sync or Google even thought of creating Chrome. It doesn't matter what system I log into or what browser I am using (well...between Chrome, FireFox, IE, and Safari) so I have a local copy on numerous machines and a copy in the cloud. You can even create bookmark profiles so those "mature" links don't show up on the work PC unless YOU want them to. If you add their premium service (US $12 annually) you can sync to your mobile device (iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Dolphin) as well as receive priority support.

Although, technically, it didn't say it was dying but claimed it was dead already.

Xmarks Users
LastPass acquired Xmarks (browser plug-in for bookmark syncing) last year no mention of that database of more than 4.5 million users being breached.

Re:Sad
Chrome has its own bookmark sync now (separate from Google Bookmarks, IIRC) that does what you want. Open up Options, then go to the Personal Stuff tab.
If you need to sync across multiple browsers, Xmarks will sync Chrome, Firefox, IE and Safari.

XMarks & Browser-Specific Services
I use XMarks to synchronize across different computers and browsers. They were actually going to shut down next month, but an outpouring of support from users convinced LastPass it would be worth buying the company and setting up a freemium model (basic service is free, you can pay for extras). Free accounts get automatic bookmark sync and online access to the bookmarks from other browsers. Premium accounts add Android & iPhone apps, tab sync, and a couple of other things.
Most web browsers have some sort of biult-in sync service these days, though of course it only works if you use the same browser on every computer.
Firefox 4 adds a built-in sync service.
Chrome and Opera both have built-in sync services.
Safari has some sort of sync service, but I think it might be part of mobile.me or whatever Apple is calling their online offering these days.
Not sure about IE, but I'd bet there's a Windows Live bookmarking service by now. -

Re:Eh, good riddance
what was saved and will that be getting sold off after they "close" ?)
I've been using their service for a while, including password saves on pretty much everything but banking sites (so email, amazon, newegg, etc) with no issues. From one of their pages on the closing, http://www.xmarks.com/about/shutdown
:Privacy and Your Data We understand that you have entrusted us with the task of storing your personal browser data and we take that responsibility very seriously. * We will never sell or release your personal data, and we will make sure to delete all user data once the Xmarks service shuts down. * If you'd like to take immediate action, click here to immediately delete your account and user data. Re:I prefer tabsbookmarks
Have you considered xmarks? Not only can you use it to sync bookmarks among computers, you can sync among supported browsers as well.

Re:What I want
There is plugin for browsers called Xmarks that will cache your bookmarks, passwords and session to an FTP server. I've been using it for a while on my own FTP box, apparently it works for IE and Chrome too but I only use it with FF.
