Logo !
Have you ever heard about Logo ? Logo is a simple iterative visual language. You have a "turtle" that you can move with simple commands. And that turtle has a pen to draw geometric forms.
It's ludic and very instructive, and I loved this language when I was a kid. It also teach you the basics of programming, and even optimization.
Check out Toby , a free Java Logo implementation. It doesn't come with extensive documentation, but just peek at the source code, you will see the list of supported commands. -
Re:Ask /. (ot)
You forgot xnot.com. Same as sourceforge in most respects. AFAIK. IANAL. HTH. YMMV.

Re:Aqua Sucks--Apple Owners Should Be Furious
I have also heard this from an Apple employee with first-hand experience. So despite the new interface, things remain remarkably the same: Aqua is the official Macintosh appearance, but alternatives should be available. Now someone (Greg, Arlo?) just needs to start writing the equivilant of an appearance manager. Check out atp.xnot.com for information on an open-source effort to develop an appearance creation application, just like Apple used to create Aqua.

Re:Apple interface
If Apple doesn't continue with Appearance Themes in OS X, someone else will do it.
Here is the URL for news on the Allegro Themes Project. And here is the page for info on Theme Machine, which is a MacOS theme builder currently under development. -

Re:Apple interfaceNot by me you won't
:-)The Themese that were "supposed" to be in the OS did get killed. I've seen bootleg copies of the theme files. I've tried 'em all actually. They're pretty, but less useful than the now-classic Platinum appearance. The problem with them is that they all provide less visual feedback than the Platinum appearance. The Apple themes (HiTech and Gizmo) were pretty, but way too busy for practical use. Most of the 3rd-party themes I've seen have come up lacking with respect to the Platinum theme. YMMV.
I did a quick websearch (google) and came up with a few links:
The last link has several themes to try out, and a few links to other sites with themes.

A Muso's Coop - I'm inHi there;
It's been suggested that a co-operative would be a good way to provide indie artists with a means of getting 'exposure' and the like. I'd like to help.
I'm a piss-poor, two-buck shyster who has trouble working normal hours, and who sells fairly rudimentary webpages for not very much. I also have a year or so of spare time on my hand, and I will happily sink some time and maybe some money into helping a muso's cooperative get off the ground.
If you're interested, email me directly and we can discuss a more detailed outline. A muso's coop could do for indie musicians what XNot and SourceForge do for opensource projects: provide the hosting service; top to bottom and sideways too.
If this has already been suggested, just slap me
:)be well;
JC.

Re:What's the difference between these guys and XN
Hey, dt, you've never actually seen XNOT, have you?
Just a thought.
I'm sure I'm being a little bit too sensitive here, but to me it seems that Mr. dtype is implying XNOT couldn't reliably host a tea party for grannies. How very unkind. VA's got what, a quarter of a billion dollars behind it, and dt has to stop to point out he's bigger than me? Bite me, you godless communist.
OK, I think I've got all that out of my system. I'll stop flaming now, I promise.

Mother of F**ing God
All right. I am now very, very annoyed. I shouldn't be, but I am. Please forgive me.
I have been running a site (www.xnot.com) dedicated to hosting open source projects for four months now. CVS, Jitterbug, mailing lists, you name it, it's there. For four months, I have been paitently trying to get the word out about my site. Nada. Nil. Nyet. VA Linux basically turns and coughs and gets smack on the main page of Slashdot.
Please understand that this is not a criticism of VA Linux, nor of Slashdot, fine organizations that they are. I'm just very, very, very frustrated. And sometimes a little public venting helps.

What's the difference between these guys and XNOT?
XNOT has been doing this for a while, only better. Not beta, free CVS, page hosting, chat, FTP, an' all that. I'd take a look there too if you're interested in finding a host for a free software project.

A big AMEN! bro. IMHO the evil empire has got Oracle beat here, although I'm really looking forward to checking out KMYSQL, http://www.xnot.com/kmysql/

Re:Refuge for community sites
Hate to be a broken record, but... I provide free open-source project hosting too. Have for over a month. Really. Not a word of a lie. http://www.xnot.com
