It was orginally MSN Search but they lost too google because they were being massive dicks and loading the pretty much whole first page and often more with irrelevant paid for searches, they just got worse and worse, so loser name, associated with a looser search engine. Lets not kid around B in Bing for Ballmer, it was ego nothing more and nothing less.

I certainly use it for streaming music while I work. But I also watch a bunch of sciency, mathy and engineery channels that interest me. Since YT accounts for 90+% of the video and audio I watch and stream it was worth it to me to pay. The price is a heck of a lot less than other streaming services, works on a desktop and laptop which is what I have in front of me most of the time and there is indeed much foreign niche music content that in the US is only available to me on YouTube even though it's widely popular and available abroad.

The failing is mostly on alternative music sources that fail at being less crap than YouTube and succeed at being more expensive.

Also I can download the YouTube music as MP3s with a little command line magic. This works well when I'm traveling.

I don't think it's a problem as just because a smart phone has become "good enough" does not mean that there aren't plenty of other things that aren't "good enough" and worth improving upon or that we have invented everything that we need or would like to have.

This is such an American thing to say (disclaimer: I'm American). The problem with American culture is it wants "better stuff" not "better lives". Why "better stuff"? Well for the most part so you can show it off to your friends and say "wowee, don't you wish you could be me? I'm so cool." While you've managed to pull this off and everyone might admire you, you wake up every day thinking "fuck my life". This is why we are working longer hours to buy more stuff that we don't have any time to use. You've been suckered into the American commercialism/materialism trap.

You're only here for a relatively short amount of time. How much stuff do you really need to be content in life? How much time do you need? See, that's the big question. How much is your finite time here worth? What good is having a big house filled with stuff if you're slaving away at a job you hate while your stuff is collecting dust? That's the trap.

What's remarkable to me is that very few Americans ever question it and that's quite disturbing. Fight Club captured the idea quite eloquently in this scene. "The things you own, end up owning you." So chillingly true and yet another sucker falls into it every day and supports the system that mass produces the hand cuffs. I hope one day America wakes up and realizes there's more to life than expensive cars, clothes and gadgets.

One company involved in the test told the Wall Street Journal that for over 80 percent of the 911 calls where Google's system was used, the tech giant's location data were more accurate than what wireless carriers provided. The company, RapidSOS, also said that while carrier data location estimates had, on average, a radius of around 522 feet, Google's data gave estimates with radii around 121 feet. Google's data also arrived more quickly than carrier data typically did.

In 1996, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued an order requiring wireless carriers to determine and transmit the location of callers who dial 911. The FCC set up a phased program: Phase I involved sending the location of the receiving antenna for 911 calls, while Phase II sends the location of the calling telephone. Carriers were allowed to choose to implement 'handset based' location by Global Positioning System (GPS) or similar technology in each phone, or 'network based' location by means of triangulation between cell towers. The order set technical and accuracy requirements: carriers using 'handset based' technology must report handset location within 50 meters for 67% of calls, and within 150 meters for 90% of calls; carriers using 'network based' technology must report location within 100 meters for 67% of calls and 300 meters for 90% of calls.

522 feet is 159m. 121 feet is 36m. It seems a bit implausible that if the average error for operator location is 159m that they're actually implementing E911 properly. Of course most people don't know or care about that, and neither do T Mobile. Still why not ask the networks why their location service is so much worse than it's supposed to be and why it took them from 1996 until now to get to that point?

Disclaimer : when visiting the US I used to use a T Mobile $30 Walmart plan SIM in my phone, until T Mobile discontinued it. I don't think Binge On should be illegal. John Legere is cringe inducing though, and that's why he deserves some reporter asking him why E911 works so poorly after such a long time. Also it'd be interesting to see if he actually knows about technical details like this.

Finding out that Wallet Biopsies were a thing (I experienced one before hearing the Sopranos name it) was a frightening ordeal. College History courses helped too. Finding out that slavery was basically a caste system used to keep poor white southerners in their place (slaves were a poor deal, cheap immigrant labor was much, much more profitable) and getting the internet and finding out that through out history bigotry, racism and caste systems have been used over and over again by the 1% to divide and conqueror the working class cinched it.

The Trump/Russia/NRA isn't made up. It's been pretty well researched. I suppose the point could be made that Trump didn't know about it, but that's part of the whole scam. Trump isn't really a leader, he's a demagogue. So he never has to actually know anything about the corruption that supports him. But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be taken down by it. Trump isn't just a man anymore, he's an administration. He's the executor of the US Government. As a leader he's responsible for what his people do. Especially when it's so obvious he's turning a blind eye.

Maybe they call it a music service because that's what people who have YouTube Red (or even just YouTube in general) are actually using it for. If you look at some of the play counts for popular songs on YouTube some are in the hundreds of millions. I think this has more to do with people just wanting to hear certain songs on demand rather than watching the actual videos though, and I suspect that's probably due to many streaming services not allowing that behavior in the free tiers which is what drove people to Google instead.

I think it just shows how much people just want to be able to pick arbitrary songs to listen to such that they're willing to waste bandwidth on a video that they don't even see because it's hidden away in a different tab. YouTube could probably significantly cut bandwidth costs if they could detect this and only send audio in those cases. YouTube gets used only because nothing else has all the music (and by this I mean a lot of niche stuff) and the ability to arbitrarily play it.

I don't really know why YouTube Red is necessary though since you get all of that without a subscription. Though to be fair I don't really get streaming services in general. Personally I just prefer to buy albums that I like and keep music on my phone. All of the big stores are DRM free and often times you can find good albums on sale for $5.

I'm a programmer (started on TRS-80), and I'm helping my 17 years old nephew learn to program. We've done a little of everything over the last few years, but recently we watched Ben Eater's 8 bit computer series on youtube, where he literally builds a computer from logic gates and simple chips on breadboards. He does an incredible job of explaining how computers work, and I think anyone learning to program would benefit from his series.

Well, the problem is with science itself. Or rather with the way science is covered in the media. The media wants answers, but the first step in science is finding good questions. You can't answer a question like that until you know the phenomenon exists, but people want to jump straight to what it means.

If there were one thing I wish the educational system instilled in people, it would be the capacity of being concerned without necessarily being alarmed. People come out with basically two easy options to fall back on: alarmism and denialism.
