Re:Crack vs. Foss
Then use TUGZip, IZArc, PeaZip, Filzip, ZipGenuis or a dozen other free compression utilities. I'm sure one of them will be to your liking.
I have personally used TUGZip and IZArc for years and think they are both fantastic pieces of software. I have been meaning to also give PeaZip a try, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Re:small mistake
Save yourself some trouble and use ZipGenius. It does 7-zip and other formats, integrates into the Explorer context menu if you choose, and it's freeware (even for corporate use). Downside is that it's not open-source, and the GUI could be improved a little.

Re:Who gives a shitFYI,
There are a number of packages that can utilize
.rar files. I am partial to ZipGenius:http://www.zipgenius.it/index_eng.htm
Free (like drinking your friend's beer) and supports every compression type I have ever seen on a Windows platform. And no nagging or guilt!

I've been using ZipGenius lately. It's pretty good
Not open source but free as in beer with no nags or ads. Made in Italy and available in English and Italian and more. It handles more than 20 compression formats and offers four encryption algorithms.

Re:Reboots save money
Well, if you'd like to find out about ZipGenius, go here.
Given the page full of awards from freeware sites, Tech TV and other places it's gotten, I'd say it's done well in the software world for being freeware. Featurewise, it's on the top with 7Zip and some other archive programs.
So I'd have to say that if you think it's written by an idiot, well, I'm not crazy about the user interface, but it does everything you want with an archiver and it works well for me.

Re:VIVA LA 7-ZIP!
I didn't like 7-zip personally. From memory it didn't drag-and-drop with explorer properly. ZipGenius (http://www.zipgenius.it/) is a fantastic free compression utility that (strangely) nobody seems to know about. It has a lovely interface and works quite well.

Some others worth mentioning...
ZipGenius (http://www.zipgenius.it/) - If you've used WinZip then this is the best freeware to compare with it.
XnView (http://www.xnview.com/) - prefer this to Irfanview as a graphics editor.
Ethereal (http://www.ethereal.com/) - network sniffer.
Calc98 (http://www.calculator.org/download.html) - better calculator than the default Windows' version.
CDBurnerXP (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) - Full featured freeware CD burning software package.
Crimson Editor (http://www.crimsoneditor.com/) - ultimate notepad replacement.
Max's HTML Beauty (http://www.htmlbeauty.com/) - full featured HTML editor.
And of course nonags.com is one of the first places I check for these kinds of things. -
Re:forget winrar
Try ZipGenius - it's not open source but it is free, and it's got a great UI with many many different compression formats supported.
