This whodie's been appearing on wax since he was drinking from sippy cups. A family dinner at Romeo's would see the likes of Master P (daddy), C-Murder (uncle #1) and Silkk the Shocker (uncle #2). And he already has to fend off the ladies at the mall, like any seasoned superstar.

With his self-titled debut (July 3), the No Limit colonel is ready for his son to bring his label to the next level. Romeo's already become the youngest solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with his first single, "My Baby."

"This is the first time we ever put an album out and didn't have to sticker it," Master P has boasted. "This is something bigger than me, Snoop or Silkk."

Please remember, yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered *BSD community when last month IDC confirmed that *BSD accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all servers. Coming on top of of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that *BSD has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. *BSD is collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by failing dead last in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.

You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict *BSD's future. The hand writing is on the wall: *BSD faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for *BSD because *BSD is dying. Things are looking very bad for *BSD. As many of us are already aware, *BSD continues to lose market share. Red ink flows like a river of blood. FreeBSD is the most endangered of them all.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers.

OpenBSD leader Theo states that there are 7000 users of OpenBSD. How many users of NetBSD are there? Let's see. The number of OpenBSD versus NetBSD posts on Usenet is roughly in ratio of 5 to 1. Therefore there are about 7000/5 = 1400 NetBSD users. BSD/OS posts on Usenet are about half of the volume of NetBSD posts. Therefore there are about 700 users of BSD/OS. A recent article put FreeBSD at about 80 percent of the *BSD market. Therefore there are (7000+1400+700)*4 = 36400 FreeBSD users. This is consistent with the number of FreeBSD Usenet posts.

Due to the troubles of Walnut Creek, abysmal sales and so on, FreeBSD went out of business and was taken over by BSDI who sell another troubled OS. Now BSDI is also dead, its corpse turned over to another charnel house.

All major surveys show that *BSD has steadily declined in market share. *BSD is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If *BSD is to survive at all it will be among OS hobbyist dabblers. *BSD continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, *BSD is dead.

I understand that this is a long post, but please consider reading it as I think I have something mildly informative to share for some people anyway.

Many of the arguments I see for the DMCA go something like this:

"Well, he wrote a piece of software that's purpose was to break copyright protection".

I ask you all to really *think* about this statement and others like it. What exactley is the *purpose* of say... DeCSS? You could use DeCSS for many purposes:

    1. Converting DVDs into other formats
    2. Playing DVDs
    3. Making backup copies of DVDs
    4. ...

Now let's consider this. You could take a DVD, make an illegal copy of it, and then play that DVD with DeCSS. You could also play that pirated DVD with a licensed player just as easily. Now lets think for a moment:

How many projects do you know of that are using DeCSS to create legitimate DVD players that allow people to play DVD on their favorite OS?

How many people do you know of that are using DeCSS to use DVD in some illegal way? How many documented cases are around describing someone using DeCSS illegally?

So how much is the DeCSS going to hurt the movie industry? How much easier does it make it to view illegal DVDs?

Does it have practial and legitimate uses?
Could it be used for illegal activities?

Now let us consider a copy machines, what sorts of things could you do with a copy machine.

    1. Make a "knock around" copy of your favorite book, or a chapter of your favorite book.
    2. Making copies of a book/chapter for your students in a classroom.
    3. Making illegal copies of a book.

    Starting to see a simularity?

Please take some time to list the differences between:

    1. A CD burner
    2. A VCR recorder
    3. A copy machine
    4. A printer
    5. A firearm

    And DeCSS.

All could be used for either legal or illegal purposes. You could use the for things that are guarenteed in the consitution
(Taping the Simpsons while you are at work), or Illegal, ( copying the Video tape you rented from Hollywood Video. )

So, you have to consider this:

When you buy a DVD should you be allowed to play that DVD on say... Linux, using DeCSS? Should you be able to make a back up copy using DeCSS? Should you be able to view illegal copies of DVDs with DeCSS (or any other DVD player)?

When someone uses a copy machine to make illegal copies, do we arrest to person who manufactured the copy machine? Do we tell everyone that they can not use the copy machine for anything whether right or wrong because one person *could* use it to do something illegal?

No we punish the person who used the tool for something wrong. We don't punish gun manufacturers when someones shoots a bunch of people, nor do we call it illegal when someone used a gun to defend themselves from a burglar.

I am getting depressed with the lack of concern for our rights, so I will have to stop.
