A reader writes "I don't know what they were smoking, but these guys decided that the G4 case makes for a great LAN party box. Of course, without the G4 and all that yucky Mac hardware -- just the aesthetics. They go about hacking and modding the case, turning a low power (aka, weak) x86 box and toss it into the G4 casing, and don't end up destroying the case to make everything fit. Lotsa pictures and explanations of every step in the process"

    All I can say to this post is, well, FUCK YOU!

    This is THE MOST obvious flamebait I've ever seen! Yucky G4 hardware. Gimme a break! When any Pentium running LInux can beat Photoshop in a benchmark, I might give some consideration to such a ridiculous statement.

    Oh yeah! All you have on Linux is the GIMP, so any comparison is moot!

    The mac, and the G4 in particular, has it's place, so please cease with the obvious CPU/OS snobbery and just report the facts. Who gives a shit if some geek holds a LAN party with a neat looking case?!?!?! It's still a geek gathering and not necessarily something useful or important!

    After having to deal with AppleDirect multiple times, I can relate to idea that gutting the system and switching it over entirely is a good use for one. Unfortunately, finding an apple machine that doesn't come with a way too hefty price tag and no gaurantee on when it will be shipped from the factory, will make anyone want to gut it. IMHO

    I don't get it. Why would you want people to think you owned a Mac? Hell, especially at a LAN party, i'd go out of my way to let them know I didn't show up with a Mac!

    I dream every night about having a G4 case with Apple logos all over it running Windows 2000. Man I will be king of cool at the next LAN party!

    Its funny that whenever mac users shout about how the mac is better than the x86 in benchmarks, its always "photoshop" that's run. Its like its the only god damn piece of software in the world.

    And I spose they dont really talk about the fact that they have to run a previous version of the OS inside OSX to get previous software running. That's a bit slow and clunky. Now imagine that, if real computer users had to run a NT session inside Win2k to get software from the last 2 years to run. sheesh.

    Also the windows media compression, released on mac as well as windows, but the thing is, the macs just can't handle the format real well. Where are those "its really a supercomputer" people now? I mean that format is just a ms' version of mp3s.
