  1. As Always... on Still More Advertising Links · · Score: 1

It's buyer beware for software. It's good to know there's published information on what these software packages are truly designed to do, and one can only hope that some of the users have decided to uninstall them based on the recent media hype.

Being a web designer and developer myself, I can attest to the fact that it can be alluring to know that by selling your integrity, you can make a few extra cents off of an unsuspecting victims' email. But in the end, I don't think it's neccessary to get a fatter pocket by helping to increase spam; aiding in slowing down the already clusterf*cked internet, or participating in an unethical venture designed to help market others' products or services online.

Webmaster: don't sell our rights away for a few cents a click!

  2. Princess Mononoke was a fantastic movie... on Miyazaki's Future w/ Disney · · Score: 1

This really sucks. Disney shouldn't be in the anime game anyway. Manga has been doing it right for years. It's a shame that Hayao's talent is being wasted with them. Who needs new anime anyway I guess. When there's Boah, Vampire Hunter D, Fists of the North Star, and many other classics to watch.

Speaking of classic anime. I saw Ninja Scroll on cinemax the other day.

From the space available, ability to provide connectivity up to oc192 and the inexpensive pricing, I can't imagine this wouldn't do well. Unless people in Michigan are afraid to go that far underground.

What I would like to know is, what type of demand for co-location services are there in Michigan?

And how long does it take to get from ground level to the data center?

    Anyone?

  5. Set up a good jail... on Handing Over Root Passwords to Clients and Contractors? · · Score: 1

Aside from the legal implications involved in "making a backup of the system", it woul dbe a good idea to have everything you consider important backed up for safe keeping now. Especially configs, dbs, etc...

Also, you shouldn't have a problem setting a fake root via chroot and jail. From what you've mentioned about the experience lvel of the thier local tech, he/she/it probably won't know the difference...

Finally, in a perfect situation you wouldn't have to keep clients that you wouldn't believe you for problems that they may have caused, but you've made the right step by recognize the chance of it happening. I would recommend alerting them to the implications of having shared admins on production machines... It leads to more technological and social subversion, and by explaining the downfalls of and your concerns, you may find they rethink their decision...

  6. He didn't mention... on Brian Behlendorf Interview · · Score: 1

He didn't talk much about where Apache is "going next", that would have been nice to get some new info on. I think the Linux.com interviewer could have been a little bit more diverse in the questioning, and leave out some of the fluff "What's your favorite music?" questions...

Other than that, well worth the read. Right on Brian, thanks for being apart of the open source community.

  7. But But... on Don't Forget That Worms Happen Everywhere · · Score: 1

The fact that worms are cross platform doesn't change the fact that ultimately with closed source programs, a user is left waiting for a vendor to supply a patch, which in many cases is too late which leads them to having to either:

    A: Run vulnerable sh*t
    or
B: Stop running that program. Code Red tries to exploit a file called default.ida and it would require the shutdown of the IIS web server to deny access prior to patch release. Good luck getting the boss to ok that in a production environment...

There's inherint problems in all software available now. At least with some software you are allowed to see why and how for youself.

After having to deal with AppleDirect multiple times, I can relate to idea that gutting the system and switching it over entirely is a good use for one. Unfortunately, finding an apple machine that doesn't come with a way too hefty price tag and no gaurantee on when it will be shipped from the factory, will make anyone want to gut it. IMHO

  14. As a St. Pete resident... on Florida Surveillance Cameras Claim a Victim · · Score: 3, Informative

I can tell you first hand how much controvery this has spurned in the greater Tampa Bay area. The cameras were installed quite awhile ago, and have been used as passive crowd surveilance to help the police monitor and track criminal activity on the busy streets of Ybor City.

The cameras on the street are not hidden whatsoever, and with the media hype that surrounded their installation, I would imagine the larger percentage of people who live in that area, were aware of them being there.

Unfortunately, mistaken criminal recognition problems are going to arise anytime the only verification method used is cameras in a surveilance environment. I think the main goal now should be to make sure that mistakes are recognized before law enforcement contacts alleged offenders. If there had been even the most minimal of checks and balances involved in the investigation of the gentleman in this article, the problem would most likely have been averted.

  15. Sticking with my old huge metal office chair... on Aeron Chairs As Stupidity Barometers · · Score: 2, Informative

The Aeron chair definately appears nice, but I've had the same huge old comfortable office chair for years and my butt would miss it, even if my mind didn't ;)

I think the keys to stick with, in chair buying, are:
    - a metal main structure (base/leg[s]/armrests)
    - a very comfortable and cushy fabric for any part of the chair that touches the body.
    - no problem swiveling, tilting, and comfortably laying all the way back or sitting totally, for lack of a better word, "erect".

I guess what it comes down to is, at least your not on the floor.

network and system admins across the world try to deal with the Code Red I and II worms, while MS pushes us forth into .Net land. IIS 6.0 on a .Net server, hey why not? [sarcasm]

What I find so strange is, when someone commits a crime, they are held accountable for it and often spend a long period of time getting out from under the financial burden that it created. When MS stresses the envelope in the OS market, to the point where tax payers' money is used frivilously to prosecute them, it makes them millions on advertising and free PR revenue.

How can I or any of us for that matter, think that something aimed toward making authentication easier, coming from MS, would actually make things better? Oh surely mure, the atypical weblite user is going to find this a great and a wonderful "time saver", while the rest of us who give a sh*t about information security end up finding ways to publicize its' flawed security model, in desperate attempts to keep something that may end up forcing into its' use from monopolistic tactics upon us, from being so problematic. If you do listen to it, take note of the part where they begin discussing napster and mp3s in general. Notice how emmett (our hero of open source and information freedom crusader) takes the protagonist side of the issue. While, Jonny "Rotten" Lydon, a musician leans toward the antagonist. Thanx for the informative and nerdy half hour emmett.
