There are many ways in which we can look at this set of benchmarks and one involves looking at the respective user bases of the system. This would explain the bleak results of the FreeBSD based systems.
/maybe/ by 2004 FreeBSD will be a contender in the low-end server market.
*BSD faces a very bleak future. I've seen the same boring cut-n-paste "BSD is dying!" trolls for years now too, so don't dismiss what I have to say as another one of those. I researched many compartive points about all the various flavours of *BSD after my comptroller asked me to deploy an OpenBSD firewall.
Granted 4.2BSD was a very fine OS, but that was in 1983. 4.4BSD, and its brother 4.4BSBD-Lite, were abymsmal performers at best during their heydey in 1993-4. Both Solaris and HP-UX had networking stacks that supported "long fat pipes," multicasting, and TCP header header prediction years before 4.4BSD did.
I don't know why 4.4BSD-Lite became so popular. Perhaps because it was released as OpenSource in 1994? But even then there were much better TCP/IP stacks and VM schemes in use (Solaris, AIX) so availability of source code was an insignificant win at best. All OpenSource does is allow poor quality code to be re-circulated and reused again and again in new systems, while high quality and RFC compliant code is relagated to the pay environment.
Regardless, the codebase of 4.4BSD-Lite became the stepping stone for all the *BSDs that are still around now. The main three *BSDs (FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD) all use at least 85% of 4.4BSD-Lite's source code, with the rest being mostly new userland code, TCP/IP updates, and multiprocessor support.
The commerical offering, BSDI, is even more appaling - a source code diff shows roughly 94% code reuse. Paying for an archaic and outdated OS...that would explain why BSDI has less than 2% of the server market.
FreeBSD has very close ties with BSDI. I'm not one to preach doom by association, but I'm afraid FreeBSD has doomed itself by the move. If that isn't enough, FreeBSD's C2 security certification is horrible. Even NT can do better than it!
FreeBSD has a reputation of being the "fastest" BSD on x86 hardware. Actual memory bandwidth performance is a fraction of all of Sun's offerings, and the multiprocessor support is a joke since it has a poorly implemented semaphore locking mechanism. I hear a total re-write is planned, and perhaps even a security audit too, so
NetBSD, I'm afraid, is dead before it got off the ground. The goal of running on as many platforms at once is a noble and idealistic one, but in the real world its useless. At best NetBSD is a mediocre hobbyist OS that runs on outdated computers. A match made in hell it would seem, since ancient source code has been hacked to run on ancient computer. Its ports to systems such as the Dreamcast are total folly, offering no more real world use than GUI systems on headless servers. And I think the installed user base of less than 10,000 speaks for itself.
I was hopeful OpenBSD would be better as its reputation for security is interesting. Sadly, its another strikeout. OpenBSD's filesystem is extremely slow, and hardware support is nearly nonexistant. There are also numerous political issues surrouding its development team that are eating away the last bit of hope. Perhaps the reason it is secure is because no one bothers to hack it since the "prize" is mostly worthless.
*BSD users too are dooming thier own OS. As a group, they are a very vocal and rowdy bunch. No real help is given to new users and such an elitest attitude is suicide.
I chose to not deploy an OpenBSD based upon these reasons. It is my humble opinion that either NT or Solaris be used for any significant work, and *BSDs be left to the hobbyists.
I just heard some sad news on talk radio - Horror/fiction writer Stephen King was found dead in his Maine home this morning. There weren't any more details. I'm sure we'll all miss him - even if you didn't read his books you've probably enjoyed one of his movies. Truly an American icon.

France, riven by money-laundering and graft scandals reaching to the highest levels of government, is one of the most corrupt of all developed countries, according to a new international study.
The report, by Transparency International, shows that, among large developed nations, France is only outdone in the corruption stakes by Italy. Experts say graft affects every corner of life, from sport to politics. So endemic is it, they argue, that it simply represents the French way of doing business.
The report comes when President Jacques Chirac has again been embroiled in a corruption scandal. He has been accused of using £240,000 from illegal sources to pay in cash for private trips to places including New York, Japan and Mauritius for himself, his family and his friends between 1992 and 1995.
Chirac claimed the money was from an official, though secret, fund usually used to pay for covert anti-terrorist activities. Judges and opposition politicians doubted this explanation, on the ground that Chirac would not have had access to such government funds at the time as he was then only Mayor of Paris.
Instead, investigating magistrates want to question the President about the possibility that the money came from illegal commissions Chirac allegedly collected from build ingcompanies to fund his RPR party, in exchange for contracts to rebuild and refurbish Paris schools.
The charge of increased corruption came in the same week that the 'Angolagate' judicial investigation into illegal arms sales involving Jean-Christophe Mitterrand, son of the late President, and former Interior Minister Charles Pasqua, was quashed on a technicality.
The French public's faith in their political leaders' probity has taken a battering in the past year with a succession of scandals. In May, Socialist former Foreign Minister Roland Dumas was jailed for his part in the Elf Aquitaine scandal.
The trial exposed the state-sponsored corruption during the 14-year tenure of the Socialist President, François Mitterrand. Even Communist leader Robert Hue was accused this year of creaming off public service contracts from municipalities controlled by his ailing party to swell its coffers.
France has fallen two places in one year in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index. While its ranking is by no means as low as some developing countries - Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nigeria and Uganda have the worst ratings - France is perceived as one of the most corrupt Western nations.
In Paris last week Peter Eigen, chairman of Transparency International, said: 'There is no end in sight to the misuse of power by those in public office.'
France registered a score of 6.7 on the index (the lower the rating, the worse the perceived rate of corruption). The UK rated 8.3. Germany rated 7.4 and the US 7.6. The least corrupt country, according to the survey, is Finland (9.9), closely followed by Denmark and New Zealand.
One reason the perceived level of French corruption has risen is the increased diligence of investigating magistrates. Their work has unearthed a series of high-profile scandals. Magistrates such as Eva Joly and Eric Halphen have become national celebrities, not least for refusing to defer to the political classes.
But France has for a long time been perceived - and regarded itself - as corrupt. Anglo-Saxon probity is hardly seen as a virtue here. The French would rather live in corrupt Gaul than in crumbling, honest Britain where the trains don't run on time.
Right-wing intellectual Alain Minc argues that 'there is a Latin predisposition to deals and fiddles' - which is one easy explanation for France and Italy's poor rankings.
Corruption runs from the top to the bottom of French society. A government report in 1996 estimated that the cost of tax evasion in France could be as high as £21 billion per year - equal to two-thirds of the revenue from income tax.
French authorities are so bad at collecting income taxes, and the people so good at evading them, that between a third and a half of the adult population pay no income tax at all.
Journalists, models, pilots and musicians benefit from loopholes. Members of other professions - lawyers, actors, doctors - often declare only a part of their tax and over-worked tax inspectors can do little to check on their underpayments properly.
It is in through indirect taxes that the state recoups its losses from income-tax evasion. Social security contributions, property fees and VAT on goods and services can be prohibitive. Disturbingly for French notions of égalité, unlike progressive income tax these indirect taxes penalise the poor in real terms.
However, the most disturbing corruption scandals have concerned not politicians but sportsmen. The 1998 Tour de France was ruined following admissions by members of the Festina team that they had taken drugs to improve their performances.
While the development upset many fans, they could at least hold on to the reputation of the great icon of French cycling, Richard Virenque. For two years after the Festina scandal broke Virenque continued to deny that, as leader of the Festina team, he had used banned substances. But last October in a Lille courtroom, he cracked and admitted he had taken drugs.
French football has also been riven with corruption. This year has been dominated by fake passport scandals in which Brazilian players have invented European relations in order to be able to play for French clubs, with the connivance of the clubs and corrupt civil servants.
But the French can forgive corruption. In April, Bernard Tapie returned to Olympique Marseille as sporting director and a minority shareholder of the football club that he shamed and almost ruined.
His appointment came four years after he had ended a jail sentence for match-fixing. Tapie epitomised the arrogance, easy money and corruption of early 1990s France. But Marseille is back in the first division and fans as well as club officials are banking on Tapie, now 58, the wheeler-dealer businessman turned Socialist politician, to restore the club to the golden years of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when it was one of the best in Europe.
Tapie's rehabilitation is part of an intriguing phenomenon of public indifference to political and business corruption in France. Recently former French Finance Minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn was elected as a Socialist MP in a by-election in the Paris suburbs, despite facing two unresolved accusations of illegal activities.
Maybe Chirac should take heart from these trends. After all, the Gaullist candidate in the Paris mayoral elections in March, Philippe Séguin, then argued that in France there was a phenomenon called une prime à la casserole - an electoral bonus from corruption. The French seem to like their leaders to have their fingers in the pie.
Chirac will certainly be hoping to benefit from this phenomenon when he takes on Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin in the presidential election next May.
The article largely boils down to common sense tips, so I'm not sure why this is newsworthy. Is it really newsworthy to know that if there is a mirror, consider moving at least part of your load to that mirror?
Still, some good common sense information can be found, and the article is worth a read.

cvsup makes it tolerable to have a cvs client, which concurrently does the recentness compare with the downloads itself -- no BIG...LONG...PAUSE for a cvs update to scan everything then download the changes.
unfortunately it's still ultimately based on the highly excreble CVS, which still can't handle something as simple as a renamed file, to say nothing of the hell it puts you through for directories. If McVoy would stop playing silly license games with Bitkeeper so he can try to become the next Sourceforge (sorry, but you lost), then the world would probably beat a path to his door.
In the meantime, are there any robust and free alternatives to cvs?
I've finally had it: until slashdot gets article moderation, I am not coming back.

Louis Armstrong, trumpet player and Jazz pioneer, died yesterday morning in his Los Angelos home. He was 71. Armstrong's last performance was at James Madison University's Convocation Center on March 24, 2001, where he played to a standing room only 5,000. Armstrong was helped off the stage by his wife of 20 years, and he later told a reporter for the campus newspaper "I don't know how much longer I can do this. This may be one of my last shows." CVSup is awfully hard to compile. You need the Modula3 compiler. Modula3 is a whole world of it's own, like another OS on top of the kernel, with its own compiler, system library (like libc), wrappers for X and even a web browser. It takes hours to compile all that on a modern PC (unless you have to fix stuff that doesn't compile). CVSup itself is easy to compile compared to all that Modula3 stuff, but be prepared to spend many hours before you can run CVSup if you cannot get a binary for your OS.
We tried it, but we found that was far too unreliable for something as sensitive as patients medical records. We've since switched back to a BSD/110 solution.

The interface to CVSsup needs to be simple!

When spokesmen for the National Alliance, America's premier patriotic organization, discuss on the group's radio programs the Jewish control of the news and entertainment media or Jewish backing for gun confiscation or for racial mixing, the Jews also denounce them as "haters," and a call goes out to prohibit "hate" on the airwaves.
Thus, Israel Shahak's book is all the more important for being a document by a knowledgeable Jew--a Jewish "insider"--about the beliefs and behavior of his fellow Jews. Born in Warsaw in 1933, Shahak spent a portion of his childhood in the concentration camp in Belsen, from which he immigrated to Palestine in 1945. He grew up in Israel, served in the Israeli military, and became a chemistry professor. Like all Israelis, he became fluent in Hebrew. He also became acclimated to the peculiar moral atmosphere of Israeli society: a combination of overweening arrogance and deceit, a mixture of pugnacious self-righteousness and duplicity.
Unlike his fellow Israelis, however, Professor Shahak is deeply troubled by this peculiar atmosphere. Whereas the Jews around him take it for granted that the goyim on whom they depend for economic, military, and diplomatic support are too stupid ever to figure out what the Jews think about them and say about them behind their backs and plan to do to them when they can, and too sheeplike ever to take effective action if they do figure it out, he worries. He remembers that the Romans figured it out, and they consequently sacked Jerusalem and chased the Jews out of Palestine. He remembers that the Germans figured it out, and that's why he became an involuntary tenant in a concentration camp. He's worried that if his fellow Jews continue behaving as they always have, they will get themselves into some really serious trouble--again.
In particular, Professor Shahak is concerned about the behavior of those of his race who adhere to Judaism. He is not one of these himself, and so he is able to look with some degree of objectivity at the mixture of superstition, Jewish chauvinism, and hatred of non-Jews which makes up the Jewish religion and its sacred writings. He deplores traditional Jewish teachings, not only because of the danger that some new Martin Luther will come along and spill the beans to the Gentiles, but because of the spiritually debilitating effect these teachings have had on the Jews themselves. Of the world of medieval Jewry in Europe, the world of the ghetto and the shtetl which modern Jewish writers refer to in euphoric tones as a world of quaint tradition and piety, Shahak says: "It was a world sunk in the most abject superstition, fanaticism, and ignorance . . .
He cites a number of specific instances of the ways in which Jewish religious authorities have kept their flocks under control. In general, the rabbis have taught their fellow Jews that their Gentile neighbors are spiritually and morally unclean; that they are subhuman, on a level with the beasts of the field; and that they hate Jews and must be hated in return. Jews are taught that the Christian religion is a religion fit only for animals, and that its founder, Jesus, was the son of a prostitute and is presently immersed in a pit of boiling excrement in hell.
Among the Hassidim (Hebrew for "pious ones") all of these teachings are kept current. Shahak points out that a central thesis of the Hassidic doctrine is that only Jews are human beings, and that the universe was created for them alone. Non-Jews were created only to be used by Jews. Although this teaching about the subhumanity of Gentiles is most open and explicit among the bearded, sidelocked, black-hatted Orthodox Jews that one sees in Jewish strongholds such as New York City, it comes from the core of Jewish tradition and is accepted to a greater or lesser degree by all pious Jews. It is, for example, a specific tenet of the Jewish Defense League and is cited in the membership handbook for that group.
Especially frustrating to Professor Shahak is the clever deception which his fellow Jews use to conceal the true nature of Judaism from their Gentile neighbors. Regarding the veil of false piety which conceals from Gentile eyes the malevolent doctrine of the Hassidim, he writes: "A chief deceiver in this case, and a good example of the power of deception, was Martin Buber. His numerous works eulogizing the whole Hassidic movement (including Habbad) never so much as hint at the real doctrines of Hassidism concerning non-Jews." Buber (1878-1965) promoted Hassidism in Germany during the rise of the National Socialists--in fact, until 1938, when he left for Palestine--and Shahak considers Buber's efforts, despite their deceptiveness, at least partly responsible for the National Socialist reaction to the Jews. There were, after all, plenty of National Socialists perceptive enough to see through the veil. One of these was Adolf Hitler's early comrade, the editor and playwright Dietrich Eckart, whose booklet Der Bolschewismus von Moses bis Lenin is especially revealing in this regard (available in English translation from National Vanguard Books for $5.00, postpaid).
Another example of Jewish deception given by Professor Shahak concerns the etymology of the Yiddish word for a Gentile girl, shiksa . He cites the popular English-language book The Joys of Yiddish (New York, 1968), by Leo Rosten, which tells its readers that shiksa comes from the Hebrew word sheqetz , meaning "blemish." Writes Shahak, "This is a barefaced lie, as every speaker of Hebrew knows. The Megiddo Modern Hebrew-English Dictionary, published in Israel, correctly defines sheqetz as follows: `unclean animal; loathsome creature, abomination . . .
Professor Shahak writes with passion. He evidently feels that liberating Jews everywhere from the shackles of their misanthropic superstitions and freeing Israeli state policy in particular from the stifling influence of Judaism is a matter of some urgency. He focuses our attention especially on the inherent hatefulness of Judaism with citations from a number of Jewish religious writings.
This has been a favorite activity of anti-Jewish writers for centuries, who have belabored us with the Talmud's insulting and hostile comments about Gentiles. The inaccessibility to Gentiles of many of the Hebrew texts, however, together with the deception veiling them, has made Talmudic exegesis a problematic task for all Gentiles with less scholarship or determination than that of Martin Luther. For this reason one must exercise considerable discretion in quoting from many anti-Jewish writings: translations are often questionable, and references are often garbled.
Professor Shahak does not have these limitations: he knows where to look; he understands the secret meanings of all of the deceptive euphemisms; and he gives us clear and reliable translations. In a chapter titled "The Laws against Non-Jews," he writes:
. . . [T]he Halakhah, that is the legal system of classical Judaism--as practiced by practically all Jews from the 9th century to the end of the 18th and as maintained to this very day in the form of Orthodox Judaism--is based primarily on the Babylonian Talmud. However, because of the unwieldy complexity of the legal disputations recorded in the Talmud, more manageable codifications of talmudic law became necessary . . . . The most authoritative code, widely used to date as a handbook, is the Shulhan 'Arukh . . . .
He then cites the teaching of this code regarding homicide:
According to the Jewish religion, the murder of a Jew is a capital offense and one of the three most heinous sins (the other two being idolatry and adultery). Jewish religious courts and secular authorities are commanded to punish, even beyond the limits of the ordinary administration of justice, anyone guilty of murdering a Jew. . . . When the victim is a Gentile, the position is quite different. A Jew who murders a Gentile is guilty only of a sin against the laws of Heaven, not punishable by a court. To cause indirectly the death of a Gentile is no sin at all.
Thus, one of the two most important commentators on the Shulhan 'Arukh explains that when it comes to a Gentile, "one must not lift one's hand to harm him, but one may harm him indirectly, for instance by removing a ladder after he had fallen into a crevice . . . there is no prohibition here, because it was not done directly." . . .
A Gentile murderer who happens to be under Jewish jurisdiction must be executed whether the victim was Jewish or not. However, if the victim was Gentile and the murderer converts to Judaism, he is not punished.
Then Shahak gives us a rabbi's answer to an Israeli soldier who has asked whether or not it is proper to kill Arab women and children. In his answer the rabbi quotes from the Talmud: "The best of the Gentiles--kill him; the best of snakes--dash out its brains."
Perhaps even more offensive are the Jewish beliefs on sexual matters. Shahak writes:
Sexual intercourse between a married Jewish woman and any man other than her husband is a capital offense for both parties, and one of the three most heinous sins. The status of Gentile women is very different. The Halakhah presumes all Gentiles to be utterly promiscuous and the verse "whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue [of semen] is like the issue of horses" is applied to them. . . . Therefore, the concept of adultery does not apply to intercourse between a Jewish man and a Gentile woman; rather the Talmud equates such intercourse to the sin of bestiality. . . .
According to the Talmudic Encyclopedia : "He who has carnal knowledge of the wife of a Gentile is not liable to the death penalty, for it is written: `thy fellow's wife' rather than the alien's wife . . . and although a married Gentile woman is forbidden to the Gentiles, in any case a Jew is exempted."
This does not imply that sexual intercourse between a Jewish man and a Gentile woman is permitted--quite the contrary. But the main punishment is inflicted on the Gentile woman; she must be executed, even if she was raped by the Jew: "If a Jew has coitus with a Gentile woman, whether she be a child of three or an adult, whether married or unmarried, and even if he is a minor aged only nine years and one day--because he had willful coitus with her she must be killed, as is the case with a beast, because through her a Jew got into trouble."
The Talmud's overriding concern with matters of money and property mirror that of the Jews, and Professor Shahak offers a number of hair-splitting examples of Jewish beliefs on the subject and the way in which distinctions are made between the property of Jews and Gentiles, and between Jewish dealings with another Jew and with a Gentile. Two of these examples will suffice here:
If a Jew finds property whose probable owner is Jewish, the finder is strictly enjoined to make a positive effort to return his find by advertising it publicly. In contrast, the Talmud and all the early rabbinical authorities not only allow a Jewish finder to appropriate an article lost by a Gentile, but actually forbid him or her to return it. . . .
It is forbidden to defraud a Jew by selling or buying at an unreasonable price. However, "Fraud does not apply to Gentiles, for it is written: `Do not defraud each man his brother' . . .
Shahak points out that "the Halakhah interprets all such idioms [as `each man his brother' or `neighbor'] as referring exclusively to one's fellow Jew."
How have the Jews managed to keep teachings of this sort concealed from the Gentiles among whom they live? The truth of the matter is that they have not always been able to do so. Luther was not the only Christian scholar who learned Hebrew, peered into the Talmud, and was horrified by what he saw. Sometimes the Jews were able to bribe the Christian authorities to overlook such things, but throughout the later Middle Ages there were prohibitions and burnings of talmudic literature by outraged popes and bishops.
The Jews developed a clever system of double bookkeeping to circumvent such "persecution." They modified or deleted the offending passages from new editions of the Talmud, and they made up a separate compendium--Talmudic Omissions , or in Hebrew Hesronot Shas --which circulated surreptitiously among the rabbis. In Israel today, feeling cocky enough to dispense with most such deceptions, the Jews are putting the passages which formerly had been omitted or modified back into the latest editions of the Talmud or the Shulhan 'Arukh in their original form. They are still careful with translations into Gentile tongues, however. Professor Shahak gives an example:
In 1962 a part of the Maimonidean Code . . . the so-called Book of Knowledge , which contains the most basic rules of Jewish faith and practice, was published in Jerusalem in a bilingual edition, with the English translation facing the Hebrew text. The latter has been restored to its original purity, and the command to exterminate Jewish infidels appears in it in full: "It is a duty to exterminate them with one's own hands." In the English translation this is somewhat softened to: "It is a duty to take active measures to destroy them." But then the Hebrew text goes on to specify the prime examples of "infidels" who must be exterminated: "Such as Jesus of Nazareth and his pupils, and Tzadoq and Baitos [the founders of the Sadducean sect] and their pupils, may the name of the wicked rot." Not one word of this appears in the English text on the facing page (78a). And, even more significant, in spite of the wide circulation of this book among scholars in the English-speaking countries, not one of them has, as far as I know, protested against this glaring deception.
Professor Shahak is too naive. If he ventured out of Israel more and came to know Christian scholars better, he would understand what a pathetic and Politically Correct rabble they have become. There is not the slightest spark of Martin Luther left in the lot of them. Traitors to their own people as well as to their religion, they smile and genuflect at every insult from the Jews and are capable of feeling indignation only when the Jews receive some slight. The Jews are able to enlist them by the regiment to denounce in unison as "hate" any criticism of Jewish policies or doctrines, but they turn a blind eye to the virulent hatred which permeates Judaism and motivates the great majority of Jews, religious as well as secular.
Israel Shahak is a rare Jew indeed, and his book is essential reading for anyone interested in the problem of the Jews.

At least I think it was a couple of years ago. I was with some people in a McDonald's on a school trip. There was an old man who brought a boogie bass with him and was going around showing it to people. When I first saw it I thought it was pretty dopey, but when he came and showed it to us, though I hate to admit it, it made me laugh a bit. I'm not the type who usually laughs at this kind of thing. Once when required to write a story or essay with the title "Anything Can Happen" I wrote a story in which ended with the protagonist being killed by a falling bullet which was fired at the beginning of the story. From that you should be able to see how far talking fish are from my notion of what is funny. I think this shows that such a gadget can be somewhat amusing if used in moderation.

Last night poor Mister Tibbs was so stressed out that he didn't eat any of the fresh egg and bean mash which I made him (normally he loves it. Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash Saturday in the Bahamas, the Associated Press reports.
The 22-year-old singer, born Aaliyah Haughton, was among eight killed when a small airplane crashed on Abaco Island soon after takeoff, authorities told the news service. Aaliyah was in the Bahamas shooting her next video, Bahamas Minister of Tourism Tommy Turnquest told AP.
The plane, a Cessna 402, reportedly was on its way from Marsh Harbour on Abaco to Opa-locka, Florida, when it went down. The cause of the crash was unclear, authorities told the news service.
In July, Aaliyah released her self-titled third album, which found her moving away from club beats toward more introspective, midtempo numbers (see "Aaliyah Makes Love And War On New Album"). The album features the single "We Need a Resolution," one of three songs she recorded with producer and frequent collaborator Timbaland.

My complaint with CVSup is that there's no commandline client! Since I often do work on remote servers with X ports firewalled, this is a bit of a problem for me.
Moreover, the GUI for the client is just *ugly*. It's this really bad pink colorscheme with Motif style widgets.
The software works really well as far as doing updates quickly and in a minimum of network traffic, but it's completely beyond me why the default client is GUI only. I've also searched for commandline tools but have yet to find anything, anyone know if such a beast exists?

Let's have a close look at the costs involved when running a Linux system.
Linux' cost consists not only of the frequent updates, which require new cdrom's to be bought if you don't have a high speed Internet connection.
Another factor in Linux' cost is its maintenance. Linux requires a *lot* of maintenance, work doable only by the relatively few high-paid Linux administrators that put themselves - of course willingly - at a great place in the market. Linux seems to be needing maintenance continuously, to keep it from breaking down.
Add to this the cost of loss of data. Linux' native file system, EXT2FS, is known to lose data like a firehose spouts water when the file system isn't unmounted properly. Other unix file systems are much more tolerant towards unexpected crashes. An example is the FreeBSD file system, which with soft updates enabled, performance-wise blows EXT2FS out of the water, and doesn't have the negative drawback of extreme data loss in case of a system breakdown.
The upcoming 'solution' to this, EXT3FS, is nothing more than an ugly hack to put journaling into the file system. All the drawbacks of the ancient EXT2FS file system remain in EXT3FS, for the sake of 'forward- and backward compatibility'. This is interesting, considering that the DOS heritage in the Windows 9x/ME series was considered a very bad thing by the Linux community, even though it provided what could be called one of the best examples of compatibility, ever. When it's about Linux, compatibility constraints don't seem to be that much of a problem for Linux advocates.
Back to Linux' cost. Factor in also the fact that crashes happen much more often on Linux than on other unices. On other unices, crashes usually are caused by external sources like power outages. Crashes in Linux are a regular thing, and nobody seems to know what causes them, internally. Linux advocates try to hide this fact by denying crashes ever happen. Instead, they have frequent "hardware problems".
The steep learning curve compared to about any other operating system out there is a major factor in Linux' cost. The system is a mix of features from all kinds of unices, but not one of them is implemented right. A Linux user has to live with badly coded tools which have low performance, mangle data seemingly at random and are not in line with their specification. On top of that a lot of them spit out the most childish and unprofessional messages, indicating that they were created by 14-year olds with too much time, no talent and a bad attitude.
I could go on and on and on, but the conclusion is clear. Linux is not an option for any one who seeks a professional OS with high performance, scalability, stability, adherence to standards, etc.
CVS may have its flaws, but they are relatively minor compared to most of the competition. Sure, you can't rename/move things conveniently, which is irritating, but how often do you want to do that in reality? Not very, surely. Given the technical complications with moving a file (which might be branched, and so on) I can live with this.
We switched to CVS some time ago at work, when we needed our MLOC project source base to be accessible to people working from home or clients' sites. So far, it's proved pretty successful. We're prepared to sacrifice a couple of little things in exchange for a robust mechanism for remote file access and a decent set of tools for integrating changes from many people.
I should note that we also use WinCVS, which does make certain tasks easier. For example, you can do an atomic commit of multiple files from all over the source tree easily this way, much more easily than from the command line. Most of the awkward things about CVS are handled by using a decent GUI on top of it, in our experience.

When I use Project Builder, the capability to use CVS is dimmed out. I checked in Terminal.app and cvs is installed and working correctly. (cvs -h works) How do I configure it to setup to connect to a CVS server and corresponding project so that I can commit my sources?

I first ran into this at $VERY_LARGE_CORP where every machine was built off a standard image, which included a cron job to synchronize the clock with the master NTP server every hour, on the hour- which meant that precisely on the hour, the NTP server got slammed with hundreds of requests for the time.
I'm not sure why nobody has adopted my solution to the problem of ensuring that all the hosts do not hit the server exactly on the hour- the 'rsleep' command.

That cvsup is one of this coolest things about *BSD. It's more or less the reason why I choose FreeBSD over Linux when admining servers. It's make the administrative job of updating and securing your machines so easy.
