  3. i dig it, but the lack of anytime saving sucks on New Super Mario Bros. Review · · Score: 1

the new powerups are less inspired than suits of old, but i think the mini-mario is a great addition for the floaty long jumps. i would have really, really liked to see it be more world-style with a cape and yoshis, though. it feels closer to smb1 than 2 or 3 though, and i do appreciate that. the level design is very good and nothing has felt too long so far. i'm currently on world 5.

the lack of saves is a drag though. perhaps i'm missing something, but it seems that you have to win a castle or pay to unlock a path in order to save. when i play, i actually avoid unlocking because the option to save is more valuable than the house items.

is this really a pressing issue in your life?

i am not sucati, and i don't know sucati. i have nothing to do with him, nokia, dell, microsoft, or any other company in the pda/umpc space. i'm just a consumer that bought a 770. it sucked, so i returned it and picked up something that didn't. it's only coincidence that someone else apparently had the good sense to do the same.

i ended up grabbing a dell axim x51v to replace it. you have to jump through a couple hoops to get certain apps to run in vga, but i've been pleased with the unit overall. i use the pre-release opera web browser on it, and i haven't had any problems like i encountered with the 770.

it's also a big bonus that i was able to pick up a bluetooth gps receiver and a car cradle for navigation with my purchase.

most recently, i bought a slingbox media streamer so now i can watch my own tv on it!

overall i'd rather have a umpc when it comes out, because it's mostly about home browsing and gps navigation for me. but i'm glad i picked up my axim, and i think it's orders of magnitude better than the 770. for people who value the actual pda/pim aspects, i think it would be a particular no-brainer (ignoring linux affinity).

wpa is only 'vulnerable' to dictionary-based attacks. good luck cracking a 63-character, random password with that.

wep can be cracked in a matter of minutes. all you need is linux (bootable cd distribution will work), a card that supports packet injection, and a copy of aircrack. if your card doesn't support packet injection, you can still do it easily, just slower.

  11. i'm returning mine on Nokia 770 Alive and Well · · Score: 1

i preordered from nokia and ended up picking one up (for less money) at compusa before it shipped.

overall the hardware is great use-wise. nice build quality, good size screen. could use scroll buttons. i'd much rather have sd over rs-mmc. charger works well.

cold booting to a functional desktop takes a painful 45 seconds. since the battery life is great, most people leave it on permanent standby for 'instant on'.

the ui is a bit kludgy, and the software generally spartan. a lot of this doesn't matter to me, because i basically bought it to browse and read pdfs. people complain about the handwriting recognition (i just use the great onscreen keyboard), email client, etc. packages from the web install and uninstall great.

the pdf reader is unusably slow. we're talking over a minute to open the first page of a 500k text-heavy pdf, over a minute to zoom in, over a minute to change to the next page.

the opera broswer is great, but i had plenty of actual reboots before i hacked the system to use a swap file on my rs-mmc card. even with that, it still locks up regularly on complex pages. potentially poorly designed pages too, but they render fine in opera for pcs and even on the 770 - they just lock up when you try to click a link and that sort of thing, presumably because it's out of memory. to enable swap you need root, which is a bit of an ordeal (needs a linux box, linux flasher, enabling debug mode, etc). quite a hack too for limited write cycle media that's supposed to be used as simple storage.

overall i would love for the system to work, but it gags on my everyday web usage and pdfs are effectively unreadable. the developers say the speed problems are a software issue, but i'm not going to let my return period expire and hope that they're right.

i think it's pretty obvious that most people who bought a video ipod are going to buy 1 video just to check it out. i know a guy that has bought every generation of ipod as soon as they were released (normal, mini, nano, video). he's never bought a song on itunes, but he did buy some pixar video just to see how the process worked.

if you threw out one video purchase for every one video ipod customer, i think the numbers might be a lot different. weren't a million nanos sold in a few weeks?

there's a 'downgrade rights chart' which has the following text:

"Q. Can I downgrade my OEM version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional to Windows 98 (Second Edition)?
    A. Yes. OEM Downgrade Rights for desktop operating systems apply to Windows XP Professional only. Please note, OEM downgrade versions of Windows XP Professional are limited to Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0, and Microsoft Windows 98 (Second Edition). End users can use the following media for their downgrade: Volume Licensing media (provided the end user has a Volume Licensing agreement), Retail (FPP), or System Builder hologram CD (provided the software is acquired in accordance with the Microsoft OEM System Builder License). The downgrade operating system is governed by the Windows XP Professional EULA, and the end user cannot use both the downgrade operating system and Windows XP Professional."
