    Work in-progress includes support for fine-grained
    SMP locking in kernel, allowing higher performance on multi-processor machines, support for Scheduler Activations, allowing parallelism in threaded programs, file system snapshots, fsck-free booting, network optimizations such as zero-copy sockets and event-driven socket IO, ACPI support, and advanced security features such as Mandatory Access Control.

    None of these features are needed by the average user. I don't find the slip surprising or a big deal considering the tech economy. Just look at yer VALinux corporate strategy, or some stock prices at LWN.

    These hackers are in it for the long haul, FreeBSD will continue to be one of the best OS's around.

    I like BSD for technical reasons that probably go over your head. John Dyson wrote a state of the art vm. Linux's vm is a toy compared to his, on par with W2K's. Don't even get me started on the comparison between the TCP/IP stacks.

    I really enjoy the update process employed by FreeBSD. Superior to Debian's, which is the best in the linux community.

    Check it out. Also peruse the BSD lisence.

    The only reason I'd go back to Debian is convincing the pointy haired boss at work. FreeBSD is such a great OS, but no publicity. Wish I could get some servers up at work :-(, tough sell.

Give up yer middle ware oracle enterprise dot com crap written in java and write some client server C/UNIX progs. Nice environment. Not much money, but the system works good. Very satisfying to develope with emacs, gcc, gdb. open source me...

    Having worked with AIX, IRIX, and Solaris I'd just like to say that my os of choice is LinuxOne's fine product. It truly is a disservice not to mention LinuxOne among the top five distros. Why I'd rather be developing under LinuxOne than have hot grits poured down my pants. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    if you want to crash and burn, it does seem that the old big budget projects actually exceeded and outperformed design specs by years in this case. Big budget projects are also more fun to work on from an engineering standpoint, much like having hot grits in my pants.
