As such wonderful documentaries as The Siege have so articulately exposed, the Liberal masterminds in Berkeley and their toadies throughout the nation have been silently waging war against the American people and their God-given rights to protect themselves, their worship, their family values, and their hard work. Much of this has been conducted under the guise of preventing "terrorism", a meaningless word engineered by radical left-wingers specifically to bring fear into the heart of honest Americans. Think about it -- can you remember any reference to so-called "terrorism" that occurred before Liberals invaded our government offices in the last decade? Of course you can't, because despite whatever the revisionist histories may tell you, there is no mention of any "terrorism" in classic literature before 1980. Only then did the neo-Marxists invent such absurd figures as Timothy McVeigh and Osama Bin Laden in order to legitimize their anti-freedom agenda, drowning the spirit of the American people in a blatantly-engineered machine of fear and mourning for "victims" of these "terrorist attacks".
In fact, it should be incredibly obvious that the concept of a 110-story building even being built, much less two, is a clear and obvious fraud. No documentation of these "twin towers" existed before a "terrorist attack" occured on the previously-nonexistent pair of skyscrapers on September the 11th. Due to this hoax being perpetrated by the Liberal-controlled media, suddenly people all over the world mourned the loss of thousands of people who had not existed before. Innocent men and women, brainwashed by the left-wing education institutions, gave firsthand accounts of losing relatives they never had until the "attack" happened.
But the most outrageous aspect of this hoax is the "Pentagon" -- a government office fabricated especially for this purpose. Liberal media claims this imaginary building to be "the center of America's defense system", although obviously an organization as proud and God-fearing as the United States Military would never think to station themselves in a building of five sides, so obviously close to the pentagram, mark of Lucifer himself. It is insulting to the nation's intelligence that eight hundred members of the world's proudest institution would be made to meet their Lord by something as graceful, efficient, and secure as our country's fine aviation system.
Don't let the devious tricks of the Liberals allow you, a citizen of the greatest nation this Earth has ever or will ever know, to surrender your freedoms. Any lesser nation would have succumbed to their wills long ago, and indeed the socialist states in Europe already have. It is only the superior resilience, pride, and intellect of America that has allowed it to withstand the constant threat of Liberal control.

i tried to grab at least the images linked to directly on the front page, in the hope that i could mirror them, or at least pass them on to someone else to mirror them. this was when the article had only 4 responses (all -1, of course).
the site was already toast. i got half of one image.
wouldn't it be cool if slashdot could choose 5 or 10 trusted people (slashdot users who had previously performed a good public service and mirrored old articles) to get the story 5-8 minutes early?

What about a slashdot cache similar to the Google cache. Before things are posted on /. they automatically get cached and hosted on /. (which can handle *a lot* of traffic.

One could set up an account with a script that would auto mirror the site when it recived an email. I'm sure someone here could set that up. The script could then respond once/if it successfully mirrored the site and those links could be posted in the story

I remember when Bill Cheswick started making them. At the time, both he and my dad were at Bell Labs. He even printed two different views out for me to hang on my dorm room hall. But these have interesting research aspects in small parts. The first is mapping the internet. Damn. He has daily logs going way back, and on his website has videos of the IP's of Bosnia blinking on and off during the days of bombing them. (Google search for him). It's incredible.
But the visualization has interesting problems. My dad did some interesting work on the computational geometry structure that allowed for these things to be visualized. They have various springiness between all the connections that eventually reach the state that's displayed. The colors can be assigned in various ways (the one I remember is that each different part of the IP address is a component of RGB). It's an amazing effort that's a lot less hype and a lot more science than we might think.
For more info, the book Programming Pearls by Jon Bentley has mention of it (my copy is packed away, otherwise I would cite it), if obscure. But if you want to do cool stuff like this, it's important to remember that it's not just scripts, cs theory can help everywhere! A useful lesson to take to heart.

It's just the pipe out to the net is clogged, the CPU is 91% idle right now. I'm sorry it's not the world's fattest pipe, but it does handle normal traffic without problems. Bandwidth costs money, y'know? Keep trying and your requests may squeak through.

The first few nanoseconds that I heard the news, I thought the exact same thing. Then, I realized it was not one of my normal bizarre nightmares (as I dream about this crap every night.) This was in fact quite real, and happening in the US, a country that gets relatively few terrorist attacks.
No, the US isn't better than the rest of the world, and no we shouldn't think we're too good to get attacked. But then, that's just it. We shouldn't think this because quite apparently we CAN get attacked. Now that it's OBVIOUS that it's apparently not real hard to do, we can all be sure there will be more to come.
And when it comes to the possibility that you, I, or anyone we know/love/care about could get killed by some psycho religious person acting upon his superstitions while the victims are minding their own god damned "Uninvolved" business, then it most certainly DOES involve me, and it involves you, too.
