Jacob writes: "I just ran across an article about a new Linux-based PDA called the Powerplay III Linux PDA. The PDA is manufactured in Taiwan but is being sold by Canadian Linux company, Empower. This PDA is Palm IIIxe compatible (dragonball processor), is shipped with Empower's Linux DA O/S, and get this: its only $89! I'll be getting one..." We mentioned this operating system a few weeks ago. They now have some sort of source download available, which seems like a step in the right direction.

Threat of US strikes passed to Taliban weeks before NY attack

    The Guardian

Osama bin Laden and the Taliban received threats of possible American military strikes against them two months before the terrorist assaults on New York and Washington, which were allegedly masterminded by the Saudi-born fundamentalist, a Guardian investigation has established.

The threats of war unless the Taliban surrendered Osama bin Laden were passed to the regime in Afghanistan by the Pakistani government, senior diplomatic sources revealed yesterday.

The Taliban refused to comply but the serious nature of what they were told raises the possibility that Bin Laden, far from launching the attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the Pentagon out of the blue 10 days ago, was launching a pre-emptive strike in response to what he saw as US threats.

The warning to the Taliban originated at a four-day meeting of senior Americans, Russians, Iranians and Pakistanis at a hotel in Berlin in mid-July. The conference, the third in a series dubbed "brainstorming on Afghanistan", was part of a classic diplomatic device known as "track two".

It was designed to offer a free and open-ended forum for governments to pass messages and sound out each other's thinking. Participants were experts with long diplomatic experience of the region who were no longer government officials but had close links with their governments.

"The Americans indicated to us that in case the Taliban does not behave and in case Pakistan also doesn't help us to influence the Taliban, then the United States would be left with no option but to take an overt action against Afghanistan," said Niaz Naik, a former foreign minister of Pakistan, who was at the meeting.

"I told the Pakistani government, who informed the Taliban via our foreign office and the Taliban ambassador here."

The three Americans at the Berlin meeting were Tom Simons, a former US ambassador to Pakistan, Karl "Rick" Inderfurth, a former assistant secretary of state for south Asian affairs, and Lee Coldren, who headed the office of Pakistan, Afghan and Bangladesh affairs in the state department until 1997.

According to Mr Naik, the Americans raised the issue of an attack on Afghanistan at one of the full sessions of the conference, convened by Francesc Vendrell, a Spanish diplomat who serves as the UN secretary general's special representative on Afghanistan. In the break afterwards, Mr Naik told the Guardian yesterday, he asked Mr Simons why the attack should be more successful than Bill Clinton's missile strikes on Afghanistan in 1998, which caused 20 deaths but missed Bin Laden.

"He said this time they were very sure. They had all the intelligence and would not miss him this time. It would be aerial action, maybe helicopter gunships, and not only overt, but from very close proximity to Afghanistan. The Russians were listening to the conversation but not participating."

Asked whether he could be sure that the Americans were passing ideas from the Bush administration rather than their own views, Mr Naik said yesterday: "What the Americans indicated to us was perhaps based on official instructions. They were very senior people. Even in 'track two' people are very careful about what they say and don't say."

In the room at the time were not only the Americans, Russians and Pakistanis but also a team from Iran headed by Saeed Rajai Khorassani, a former Iranian envoy to the UN. Three Pakistani generals, one still on active service, attended the conference. Giving further evidence of the fact that the Berlin meeting was designed to influence governments, the UN invited official representatives of both the Taliban government in Kabul and the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance. Dr Abdullah Abdullah, the Northern Alliance's foreign minister, attended. The Taliban declined to send a representative.

The Pakistani government took the US talk of possible strikes seriously enough to pass it on to the Taliban. Pakistan is one of only three governments to recognise the Taliban.

Mr Coldren confirmed the broad outline of the American position at the Berlin meeting yesterday. "I think there was some discussion of the fact that the United States was so disgusted with the Taliban that they might be considering some military action." The three former US diplomats "based our discussion on hearsay from US officials", he said. It was not an agenda item at the meeting "but was mentioned just in passing".

Nikolai Kozyrev, Moscow's former special envoy on Afghanistan and one of the Russians in Berlin, would not confirm the contents of the US conversations, but said: "Maybe they had some discussions in the corridor. I don't exclude such a possibility."

Mr Naik's recollection is that "we had the impression Russians were trying to tell the Americans that the threat of the use of force is sometimes more effective than force itself".

The Berlin conference was the third convened since November last year by Mr Vendrell. As a UN meeting, its official agenda was confined to trying to find a negotiated solution to the civil war in Afghanistan, ending terrorism and heroin trafficking, and discussing humanitarian aid.

Mr Simons denied having said anything about detailed operations. "I've known Niaz Naik and considered him a friend for years. He's an honourable diplomat. I didn't say anything like that and didn't hear anyone else say anything like that. We were clear that feeling in Washington was strong, and that military action was one of the options down the road. But details, I don't know where they came from."

The US was reassessing its Afghan policy under the new Bush administration at the time of the July meeting, according to Mr Simons. "It was clear that the trend of US government policy was widening. People should worry, Taliban, Bin Laden ought to worry - but the drift of US policy was to get away from single issue, from concentrating on Bin Laden as under Clinton, and get broader."

Mr Inderfurth said: "There was no suggestion for military force to be used. What we discussed was the need for a comprehensive political settlement to bring an end to the war in Afghanistan, that has been going on for two decades, and has been doing so much damage."

The Foreign Office confirmed the significance of the Berlin discussions. "The meeting was a bringing together of Afghan factions and some interested states and we received reports from several participants, including the UN," it said.

Asked if he was surprised that the American participants were denying the details they mentioned in Berlin, Mr Naik said last night: "I'm a little surprised but maybe they feel they shouldn't have told us anything in advance now we have had these tragic events".

Russia's president Vladimir Putin said in an interview released yesterday that he had warned the Clinton administration about the dangers posed by Bin Laden. "Washington's reaction at the time really amazed me. They shrugged their shoulders and said matter-of-factly: 'We can't do anything because the Taliban does not want to turn him over'."

  21. Sandler: A 'Kid' at Heart and in Humor by Anonymous Coward · · Score: -1, Offtopic

    by EVAN WECKSELL
    Special to The Observer
Adam Sandler is not even 35 years old, and he is already regarded as a comic legend. You know the story. It all started on "Saturday Night Live" in the early '90s. Operaman, Gap Girls, those Weekend Update features. Sandler went on to explore the movie and music industries where success followed. His most recent blockbuster was the summer comedy "Big Daddy."
In an almost as acclaimed recording career, he has had two double-platinum albums that showcase his comedic and musical abilities. He has given us characters such as "The Goat" and "Toll Booth Willie," along with the memorable lyrics of "The Thanksgiving Song" and "Ode to My Car." Sandler is one of the most bankable people in Hollywood. With the release of his latest comedy album, "Stan and Judy's Kid," Sandler features a collection of 11 new skits and six new songs. While I did laugh during a majority of selections, there were others where I found myself experiencing emotions that I had never associated with Sandler: confusion and boredom.
A majority of the buzz about this album deals with the release of "Chanukah Song, Part II" which was recorded at a Brandeis concert in 1997. The instrumentation and chords are the same, but the list of Jewish celebrities is all-new. (O. J. Simpson is the only celebrity brought back.) Because I saw that performance, I remember the crowd feeding off of every new line of lyric. Some of the new names are mentioned in this verse: "Guess who gives and receives loads of Chanukah toys/ The girls from Veruca Salt and all three Beastie Boys/ Lenny Kravitz is half Jewish, Courtney Love is half too/ Put them together, what a funky bad-ass Jew!"
A second song that comes from the Brandeis performance is a very simple, but likable, "Seven-Foot Man," featuring a bass line reminiscent of Willie DeVille's "Save the Last Dance for Me." The song's title is self-explanatory. Sandler plays the role of a seven-foot man and tells of some of the obstacles he faces in everyday life. However, none is quite as memorable as this call-and-answer verse: "Seven-foot man, I cannot hide/ Seven-foot man, I know 'cause I've tried/ Seven-foot man, my last girlfriend died/ Because my penis is seven-feet wide!"
Another standout selection is "She Comes Home to Me," which features a crooning Sandler backed up by the legendary big band of Frank Sinatra. The track was recorded live in Capitol Studio A, the birthplace of many of Sinatra's classics. However, Sinatra must be spinning in his grave right now due to Sandler's corruption of the band with an original and hilarious, but extremely raunchy, story of a woman who Sandler is proud to call his own despite her being a "highly paid whore." This song's lyrics make "At a Medium Pace" sound very tame. I tried to find a line in the song that was clean enough to print, but I came up empty-handed.
While most of the music on the album was enjoyable, a majority of Sandler's skits lacked inspiration and sounded out of sync. In the tradition of "The Buffoon" and "The Excited Southerner," Sandler inserts a recurring character on the album. This time it is "Cool Guy," a smooth-talking self-proclaimed stud who sounds similar to Tim Meadows' "Ladies' Man" character from SNL. In each of the five skits he is featured, "Cool Guy" is always on course to get some action until a reference to his penis causes his partner to exit abruptly. Apparently, women are appalled when men refer to their member as a "jimmer-jammer" or "flipstick."
A couple of other skits that ultimately serve as a waste of time are "Whitey" and "The Psychotic Legend of Uncle Donnie." These tracks get you to crack an occasional smile, but they go on for over 16 and 11 minutes, respectively. "Whitey" is the story of Whitey Duvall, a modern day hunchback of Notre Dame who makes conversation in the neighborhood, but Sandler does not divulge anything about his stature until about eight minutes in when the listener has already lost interest.
"The Psychotic Legend of Uncle Donnie" is even more disappointing, because the title of the skit anticipates a scene that is nothing more than a profanity-laced retelling of a very dysfunctional family's water-skiing adventure. A third dud in the sketch department is "The Peeper," another title that gains interest but does not deliver. Sandler narrates as the title character that cannot seem to speak more than one phrase at a time. The skit covers one of his peeping sessions that comes to a very predictable conclusion.
The lone exception to Sandler's poor sketch performance is found with "Inner Voice" because he successfully meshes his mature and immature self. In the skit, Sandler meets a girl at the Laundromat, and prior to hearing Sandler's dialogue, we hear the inner voice in the form of what I would call "Billy Madison gibberish." What made this selection work, unlike many of the others, was that Sandler played a normal, relaxed individual who was getting into an innocent conversation with a woman whom he eventually asks out. It was almost as if Sandler was not even acting, giving the skit a human element that was also found in his Laundromat scene in "Big Daddy."
Sandler is still one of the funniest people around, but this release will hinder his record career more than help it. This album had a handful of outrageous moments, but more often than not, I did not find myself laughing but rather thinking about how Sandler and his collaborators could call some of the skits humorous. If you are an avid Adam Sandler fan, "Stan and Judy's Kid" would not be a poor addition to your collection. But if you are searching for a stronger and wittier comedy album, you are better off picking up Chris Rock's "Bigger and Blacker" or even Weird Al Yankovic's "Running with Scissors."

We mentioned this operating system a few weeks ago. They now have some sort of source download available, which seems like a step in the right direction.

Fritz Hollings' support of SSSCA, the draft bill that would make using 'any interactive digital device that does not include and utilize certified security technologies' illegal in the U.S. This proposed law could effectively outlaw Linux and most Open Source software, depending on how judges interpret it. A NewsForge story details where Sen. Hollings' money comes from. Guess what? His biggest contributors are entertainment industry companies, their lawyers, and their lobbyists. The story also says Hollings and his staff refused to comment on the bill, and staffers the reporter talked to refused to even give their names." Newsforge and Slashdot are both part of VA Linux.

Ask Slashdot: Is the Unix Community Worried About Worms? Posted by
Cliff on Friday September 21, @02:32PM

    from the if-it-can-happen-in-Redmond dept.
jaliathus asks: "While the Microsoft side of the computer world works overtime these days to fight worms, virii and other popular afflictions of NT, we in the Linux camp shouldn't be resting *too* much. After all, the concept of a worm similar to Code Red or Nimda could just as easily strike Linux ... it's as easy as finding a known hole and writing a program that exploits it, scans for more hosts and repeats. The only thing stopping it these days is Linux's smaller marketshare. (Worm propagation is one of those n squared problems). Especially if our goals of taking over the computing world are realized, Linux can and will be a prime target for the worm writers. What are we doing about it? Of course, admins should always keep up on the latest patches, but can we do anything about worms in the abstract sense?" Dispite the difficulties in starting a worm on a Unix clone, such a feat is still within the realm of possibility. Are there things that the Unix camp can be learning from Code Red and Nimbda?

MS FrontPage Restricts Free Speech II (It's True!) Posted by
CmdrTaco on Friday September 21, @11:34AM

    from the on-and-on-and-on dept.
A mild controvery occured yesterday in a story claiming Microsoft prohibits anti-ms speech if you use Frontpage. Here is a followup submitted by Reyacta from the original author: "Several readers have told me their
EULA for FrontPage 2002 does not contain the no-disparaging-MS
term, or that the term only applies to the FrontPage logo or to the
Web components like the MSNBC news headline component.

Just to be sure, this afternoon I went down to the store and bought
a copy of FrontPage 2002 myself. In the box was the "Microsoft
Frontpage 2002" license on a four-page folded sheet, titled "End- User License Agreement For Microsoft Software." Under Section
#1, Grant of License, the second paragraph headed "Restrictions"
states in part: "You may not use the Software in connection with
any site that disparages Microsoft, MSN, MSNBC, Expedia, or
their products or services, infringe any intellectual property or other
rights of these parties, violate any state, federal or international
law, or promote racism, hatred or pornography." (Not only a
stunning example of legal overreaching, in my opinion, but very
poor grammar as well.) It appears to me to clearly apply to use of
the program as a whole and not just the logo or Web components.

I suspect that there are different versions of the EULA of FrontPage
2002. Perhaps the license was updated for the most recent SKU,
or versions obtained through different channels don't yet have it.
I'm going to try to get Microsoft to clarify where this EULA does
and doesn't appear, but I'm not sure they will be very anxious to
    provide me with that information.

    Reply to Ed Foster."

In 1991, future coverstar Linus Torvalds released a little kernel which has ended up working in synchrony with GNU utilities and
    various other
software projects to live happily on millions of computers worldwide. Read about the beginnings of the Linux kernel peppered with
anecdotes about growing up Finnish, straight from the horse's mouth, with Linus's book Just For Fun, coauthored by David Diamond. This makes a lighthearted companion piece to the slighly-more-serious effort from Pekka Himanen, The Hacker Ethic.

Muslims in particular should note that the armed interventions in Bosnia and Kosovo, both led by America, were attacks on Christian regimes in support of Muslim victims. In neither did the United States stand to make any material gain; in neither were its vital interests, conventionally defined, at stake.

Those who criticise America's leadership of the world's capitalist system--a far from perfect affair--should remember that it has brought more wealth and better living standards to more people than any other in history. And those who regret America's triumph in the cold war should stop to think how the world would look if the Soviet Union had won. America's policies may have earned it enemies. But in truth, it is difficult to find plausible explanations for the virulence of last week's attacks, except in the envy, hatred and moral confusion of those who plotted and perpetrated them.
