Terascale Computing System Installed
lysie writes
The Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, with Compaq and the NSF, has installed the Terascale Computing System. Worldwide, it's second in power only to ASCI White at Livermore. However, it's the most powerful system in the world for unclassified research--6 teraflops per second. 3,000 Compaq Alpha EV68 microprocessors, in 750 four-processor AlphaServer systems running Tru64 UNIX."
Why not Linux, why Unix?
Question everything.
imagine a beowulf cluster of these!
Q33!!
I get 20 seconds to write my first post.
imagine a beo... err never mind.
I'll byte.
Can you imagine a Penis Bird watching Natalie Portman with lots of Hot Grits in her Pants sitting on a Beowulf Cluster of these?!
Running Freebsd emulating Linux. That would be cool.
Maybe now I can have enough RAM to run Windows XP :-)
Isn't *BSD dying?
..when you can just get a G4 and have supercomputer on your desktop?
If one turns on the lights in an automobile simulator running on this machine, do they shine?
But they're already working on building a Beowulf cluster of these. Though that sounds really wierd, now that I think about it... a Beowulf cluster of clusters... especially since each node in the cluster has 4 processors itself. Wow. Truly fractal computing.
a flop is a floating point operation per second.
a teraflop per second would be an acceleration in processing power... not what the article means I guess
So if it does 6 teraflops per second, what is its top speed, since it appears to be accelerating pretty fast?
Saying 6 teraflops per second is similar to saying 60 mph per hour
I'd sure like to build a beowulf cluster of these.
... good to see somebody getting some serious use out of that trusty old CPU architecture, anyway :)
N4st0r, trixx0r h0bb1tz0rz! Th3y st0l3 0ur pr3c10uzz!
6 teraflops per second
:-)
wow...6 trillion floating point operations per second per second.
A rate of acceleration. The first computer to mature with age? Give it a year and it'll be doing 1.89e17 flops. Can you imagine a beowolf cluster of these? :P
Killer on this.
Then all the lag-bitches would ahve to complain about is their lousy ping (what you only have a T3?)
There will probably be a lot of people here asking "why isn't this running Linux?", without really knowing what they're talking about. First of all, Linux just doesn't have the kind of scalability that a commercial UNIX, particularly Tru64, does. Secondly, Tru64 is quite well-known for its excellent clustering capabilities, and its tight integration with the Alpha platform leads to high efficiency in computing. Finally, when you are paying $43 million for a supercomputer, you most certainly are going to be running the best software out there too, and frankly, the only reason that people out there are writing free software is that no one would want to pay for their code.
When you pay for the cost of commercial UNIX systems, you are paying for the assurance that 1) you aren't going to have stupid design flaws like the one the 2.4 kernel has in its inability to use virtual memory efficiently and 2) All of your nice new custom hardware is going to be supported, and frankly, high performance drivers for high-end hardware under Linux are sorely lacking.

ALL SERIAL KILLERS, almost without exception, are severely sexually abused as children. The kind of people who hijack a plane with innocent people and drive it into a building with thousands of other innocent people are related to this phenomenon.
When sociopaths rape and kill, they do not see their victims as human beings, but only as objects. This is because the sociopaths were themselves, at one time, used as objects as their bodily integrity was repeatedly violated. The rage that results from sexual abuse is one thing, but when combined with living in a dysfunctional culture of sexual repression and misogyny, where love is reduced to violent domination, it is quite another.
Throughout the Islamic Middle East, men and women are taught to be vehemently opposed to pleasure, especially of the sexual variety. Men are raised not only forbidden to touch women, but to even look at them. Sex before marriage is not just a sin -- but a criminal offence. It is punishable by a severe beating at best, and an execution at worst.
The sexual privileges that are allowed in Islamic cultures are permitted to men. Womens sexuality and social independence represent major threats to male supremacy and are tightly controlled. Thus, as the Moroccan feminist Fitna Sabbah reveals in her book Woman in the Muslim Unconscious, there is a disturbing conflict in the Middle East between sexual libido and repression. A deep-seated fear of, and hostility to, individuality prevails, and its main expression exists in misogyny.
Socially segregated from women, Arab men succumb to homosexual behavior. But, interestingly enough, there is no word for "homosexual" in their culture in the modern Western sense. That is because having sex with boys, or with effeminate men, is seen as a social norm. Males serve as available substitutes for unavailable women. The male who does the penetrating, meanwhile, is not emasculated any more than if he had sex with a wife. The male who is penetrated is emasculated. The boy, however, is not, since it is rationalized that he is not yet a man.
In this culture, males sexually penetrating males becomes a manifestation of male power, conferring a status of hyper-masculinity. It is considered to have nothing to do with homosexuality. An unmarried man who has sex with boys is simply doing what men do. As the scholar Bruce Dunne has demonstrated, sex in Islamic societies is not about mutuality between partners, but about the adult male's achievement of pleasure through violent domination.
There is silence around this issue. It is the silence that legitimizes sexual violence against women, such as honor crimes and female circumcision. It is also the silence that forces victimized Arab boys into invisibility. Even though the society does not see their sexual exploitation as being humiliating, the psychological and emotional scars that result from their subordination, powerlessness and humiliation is a given. Traumatized by the violation of their dignity and manliness, they spend the rest of their lives trying to get it back.
The problem is that trying to recover from sexual abuse, and to recapture ones own shattered masculinity, is quite an ordeal in a culture where women are hated and love is interpreted as hegemonic control.
With women out of touch and out of sight -- until marriage, males experience pre-marital sex only in the confines of being with other males. Their sexual outlet mostly includes victimizing younger males just the way they were victimized.
In all of these circumstances, the idea of love is removed from men's understanding of sexuality. Like the essence of Arab masculinity, it is reduced to hurting others by violence. A gigantic rupture develops between men and women, where no harmony, affection or equality is allowed to exist. In relationships between men, meanwhile, affection, solidarity and empathy are left out of the picture. They threaten the hyper-masculine order.
It is excruciating to imagine the sexual confusion, humiliation, and repression that evolve in the mindsets of males in this culture. But it is no surprise that many of these males find their only avenue for gratification in the act of humiliating the foreign "enemy," whose masculinity must be violated at all costs as theirs once was.
Violating the masculinity of the enemy necessitates the dishing out of severe violence against him. In the recent terrorist strikes, therefore, violence against Americans served as a much-needed release of the terrorists bottled-up sexual rage. Moreover, it served as a desperate and pathological testament of the re-masculinization of their emasculated selves.

I'm in a class at CMU with the head of the PSC...we've been having fun these past weeks, with him talking to us about this "machine". Seems their #1 objective right now is to submit the best possible score for the TOP 500. Apparently, the deadline was October 1st, but then they have some time after that to "rectify" their score...
There was a fun story apparently about a slowdown that was due to _one_ RAM dimm not seated properly... So 2999 processors were doing their job, but then waiting for the last processor to finish its job, which was taking much longer...
I've seen pictures of this beast. All I can say is: wow. So many cables, so many machines...
And apparently, they're not yet completely connected. Each box is supposed to have two connections to a "fat tree" quadrics network. Well right now they only have one... But it seems that Linpack isn't so communication oriented, so it's not too big a strain on the network.

Pittsburgh Super Computing previously sold one of their old cray units on e-bay.
So, hey, maybe we'll be bidding on this bad boy in a couple of years...
Dr. Hanrick Eldeman, Chief Analyst of the Common Market Confederacy in Brussels, has revealed that a computerized restoration plan is already under way to straighten out world chaos. A crisis meeting in early 1974 brought together Common Market leaders, advisers and scientists at which time Dr. Eldeman unveiled "the Beast".
The Beast is a gigantic three story computer located in the administrative building of the headquarters of the Common Market.
That monster is a self-programming computer that has more than one hundred sources distributing entries. Experts in programming have perfected a plan that will handle by computer all of the world's trade.
This master plan would imply a system of digital enumeration of each human being of the earth. Thus the computer would give each inhabitant of the world a number to be used for each purchase or sale, removing the problem of present credit cards. This number would be invisibly tatooed by laser, either on the forehead or on the back of the hand. This would establish a walking credit card system. And the number could be seen only through infrared scanners, installed in special verification counters or in business places.
So why in the h$#% are we allowing Compaq to rid itself of Alpha processors? For those of us fortunate enough to have them (I use two at work), they are unbelievable number crunchers. Why? Why?
Beautiful, man, just beautiful...
/. heh)
After reading all the specs...wow. Nice work.

Hell, I could have told you that...this is "mother nature" at work, not a computer sim.

And look at the cooling specs...yikes. It should have been build in Alaska...outside...in winter.

How many applications out there run on this platform ? And why on earth didn't they install a Microsoft OS ? Microsoft has made leaps and bounds in scalability recently.
Let me quote the 'Science Editor':
:)
"SYSTEM CAPABILITY: The 3,000 processors can perform up to 6 teraflops, or 6 trillion calculations per second. Virtually every man, woman and child on earth would have to perform a calculation each second to keep pace..." hmm... with my PC maybe
The funniest thing is how MS would in reality have to create an entirely new OS for this. Simply because no sane person would allow their spaghetti design on such an awesome system. Since most in the world know that when MS says 'integration' and it is actually 'embedded' I suppose that would just add to the problems with existing MS software. I don't think researchers would appreciate having to preformat any and all data they enter in to the machine to be required to be in a propietary and lawyer guarded format. IE would not be needed, but OOPS, that is EMBEDDED inside! And anytime there was an environment change, the entire machine would have to be rebooted. (besides the usual reboots from the horrid memory management and non partitioned memory systems) I can just see one tiny segment of one of millions of threads that has a divide by zero problem and suddenly the entire machine crashes!
HAHAHAHA, just imagine a protein folding program crunching away while the scientists eagerly await the results for medicine synthesis... suddenly a blue screen of death appears or some MS dictated process (why give the user the choice, what the hell does he know?) ends up destorying weeks of processing time (and lots of money) or even better, ends up giving the results as a giant MS trademark.
ok, it is a ms slam. But I have been dealing with WAY too many crashes, quirks, and lack of administrator administrating ability these past weeks with MS bloated crapware.
...just consider it said.

"Such rankings are transitory; with machines being upgraded and even faster machines planned, the Terascale could be obsolete within three years unless it is expanded"

yeah in 3 years 6 teraflops wont be shit

will someone PLEASE suck my god damn motherfucking cock?
-- Yours Truly, Captain "Cocksucker" Picard
Umm... no. Designers were battling against the speed of electrons though a cable, signal attenuation and noise. The speed of light is that limit on the gigaflops/sec acceleration or something.
woof.
I'm off to a bar only 18 kg from my apartment for a 9V glass of beer.
The most practical use I see for it is the pleasure of pissing off Compaq by using a processor they decided to abandon... and 3000 of them no less.. That is priceless in it's own right, I would love to see their reasons for using the Alpha over the other platforms.
I would love to see some of the particle simulations this puppy could crunch, we might even see some accurate weather simulations finally..
I just wish there was a way to get that kind of power available to the universities.. Could you imagine what grad students could do if they didnt have to write a 20 page thesis and description of what they would want to run on the system? some of the best discoveries are the middle-of-the night AHA! sessions that need to be ran at that moment.
Do not look at laser with remaining good eye.
I know, in a few years 6 teraflops will be nothing, but just read the Slashdot post, we are talking about 6 tera floating operations per second per second, with that sort of acceleration, imagine the terapflops it can acheive in moments. And here I thought processing power would always have to move at a contstant speed, no wonder this thing is a big deal. It may be only second best to start with, but in just a few seconds, it will beat the pants off the most powerful system :)
XML is like violence. If it doesn't solve the problem, use more.
"COOL!!!" that's the reaction when you hear a cluster solution from alpha...
"HOT!!!" is the reaction you'll get in 2 years from now when you'll see the same thing comming from intel.
:)

While I was working for the INEEL (Idaho National Engineering Lab) the guys in the visulization and supercomputing center built a beowulf cluster of about 40 Dec Alphas running Linux, I don't remeber what flavor. They had some stability issues with the Linux kernel for the Alpha, and if my memory serves correctly the performance was also a little off what was expected, which was also traced to the Linux kernel.

SYSTEM CAPABILITY: The 3,000 processors can perform up to 6 teraflops,
or 6 trillion calculations per second. Virtually every man, woman and child
on earth would have to perform a calculation each second to keep pace.
Unless the population of the Earth has increased by 1,000 times recently, every person would have to perform a calculation every 1ms to keep pace.
Quidquid latine dictum sit altum viditur
Actually it comes down to...
a) What Compaq supports.
You don't spend 30 million and get no support.
b) Compilers.
Compaq's Alpha Linux compilers are several revs behind their compilers on Tru64.
c) There is a known 10-15% performance hit between Linux and Tru64 on the same hardware on identical code. This is mostly due to item "b" above and some kernel issues.
Interrestingly a Intel based Linux cluster was bid against this machine and the NSF awarded this box.
Of course all this probally happend before the Alpha announcement.
All of that Tru64 is great for this and that is bull. Remember these are just 4 way boxes with an interconnect. The OS is not scalling. The programmers do the scaling...
Many of the Tru64 cluster tools are very bad.
You would be very scared if you knew...
Should be number #2 on the top 500 list I would think.
DEC/Compaq's kick ass tech support. If this much money is going to be blown on a supercomputer, you are going to want the experiece of a company that set the standard in tech support and service...instead of going to alt.os.linux and post "750 Node Cluster won't boot"

Let me inform you a bit more. Do you have ANY idea how much of your tax dollars are being spent for this stuff? How about how many of your tax dollars are being spent specifically for 'oversight' to force the American subjects to conform? Then we have all the special-self-interest groups that strong arm and coerce businesses and individuals into 'honoring' these specific months.
I guess what most don't know (they know very well, but do not CARE) is that this crap makes people incapable of seeing Americans, but now they see an African/Indian/Asian/etc American. Sounds and feels like 'sub people' Americans. Notice how it is known to most conscious people that American is defined as White Male? Notice a problem with that? Well, guess what? That problem exists because of YOU! Because you insist in labeling, and more specifically labeling others of different skin color and genetics as sub-Americans. Just like when you see the 'Its a Black thing man, you wouldn't understand'. Well, you are correct, I don't understand. But then later that same person actually accuses me of seeing them as different?!?!?! OF COURSE, I SEE YOU AS DIFFERENT! You called it out to my attention. Before that, you where just another person. This country confuses me. SOOOO much opportunity, but so many lazy hypocrites that would rather sit on their butts and bitch about perceived discrimination instead of working hard and MAKING SOMETHING OF THEMSELVES.
Have your computer solve this mystery?
Disclaimer: I am not a kernel programmer, nor a compiler programmer.
Maybe your friend (and his friends) need to get off their butts, quit passing the bottle, and help make the Linux kernel what it really could be. Same thing goes for people who "laugh" at the inefficiencies of GCC.
Why is it that they have to sit around, drink beer, and laugh at code on a big screen? That sounds as pathetic as a bunch of beer-gut guys watching football, instead of out there playing it.
Contribute! That is what is needed.
However, I bet I know the reason why your friend can do nothing but laugh - he probably sold his soul and signed an NDA. Sucks to be him.
