The Ongoing Saga of Linux in China

Dan Gillmor, who's currently on the road in China, has sent a report about the role of Linux in China. We've talked about this before. Dan hits on some of the high points for *why* the Chinese are interested, which makes for interesting reading.

    A day or two ago,
    My mum caught me in bed,

    She laid one upside my head;
    She said you shouldn't wank;
    She asked if I did a lot,

    Given that XP costs exactly the same as linux or 98, most users go with 98.

    Most computers come prepirated with a ghost image of 98se, office xp, acdsee and the other various useful apps.

    Linux only stands a chance when costs are realistic.

    On the other hand, MS is fscked when they crack down on all the piracy.

    The current moderation system is one dimensional. It is not possible to label things "offtopic but funny" or "ontopic but completely fuckwitted". Therefore, I am proposing that posts be rated in a number of respects:

    Informative - how much did it add to the article.

    Clever - was the post smart (insightful)or just dumb.

    Funny. It might have been offtopic or even a hideous troll, but was it funny?

    Insulting. This covers a lot of things like the "Taco Snotting" type postst.

    In this way, you could choose to see (for example) all the posts which were clever and on topic, or all the posts which were funny (regardless of whether they are on topic or not).>br>
    Introduce a -1 to 5 scale on each dimension and adjust the view to suit and you're there. It will confuse the moderators, confuse the readers (apart from me) and make the site far less usable. And that's the measure of a significant release.

    Oh yeah - first posts, "let me get this straight" etc. would generally score very low on all scales so wouldn't be seen.
